Title: So tell me, what's it worth?
Post by: amooset on July 08, 2005, 05:59:30 AM
I'm looking into getting this engine.  Only 3K miles on a professional rebuild.  It's just a 3.8, but almost new.  It comes with all accessories and a new radiator.  I know what I'll be paying for it, just wondering what it's worth...

no idea, a 5.0 like that would be 2k just to recoup the professional rebuild.

Of course!  Paying about half of that actually and that's even more than I can afford at this point.  The guy selling it originally wanted 1300 for it, but I couldn't pay more than 7 or 8 and he needs a buyer.  I figure I can get another 150-200K out of the new one.  I'm still on the original tranny, so we'll see how long that lasts.

your missing an alternator braket to start with.  ITs suppose to be mounted on the top of the alt braket where there is a threaded hole then transition down to the intake.

I wouldnt give no more than 800.

Haha, you don't miss too much.  I've got the braket on the old motor so I can reuse that.  The other difference I noticed was the fact that the PS and AC are in different places on the new one as well, just swapped.  The throttle body was slightly different as far as where the TV rod is connected, but since I'll be swapping out that for the v8 body I've got on mine now, it won't be an issue.  Are there any other possible differences I should be looking for?

its a stang engine, so of course the bracketry will be a bit different

Looks like the PS and A/C are a little more than just swapped there. On ours I think the A/C is connected to the PS by a small V-belt, and only the PS is connected to the serpentine. May seem like a given to say this, but if I were getting that engine, I would make sure to take notes on the differences.. routing and length.. and keep that note in the car in case I was ever out in the middle of nowhere trying to replace a thrown belt.

Also would seem like a good time to slap that 95A alternator upgrade in there, if you can come up with a little extra cash.

i sure wish someone would get off their ass and put a 4.2 crank/rod/piston set into one of these.  I sure as hell havent yet.

I dunno, I am thinking about it. YOu know, 300 miles almost none highway and 1/3 of a tank left beats the hell out of 225 to 250 between tanks. Still miss the slight acidental chirps of the 5.0. sigh.

Had I not found this motor, that was one of my considerations.  Of course, I'd pay my mechanic to do it since I lack the facilities and experience.  Who knows, maybe a couple years down the road I'll try it on this motor.  It was bored .030 over before the rebuild.  A new set of rods and a new crank could be fun.
