Title: New Daily. (Contains GM product) and what Ive been up to
Post by: Clayton on November 29, 2014, 12:11:30 PM
Hey guys I know its been a minute since Ive been on here, trust me its been a very long road since July and alot of things have been happening and its just been a clusterf*ck shiznitstorm. My mom passed away the very beginning of July and her life insurance didnt cover near enough as we thought it would at the time. My fiancee got sick the first week in July and was hospitalized for about 4 days during which my mom passed. That sucked. I got a new job paying decent money about an hour away from home all fine and dandy my little comanche will do fine getting me there and back. 5th gear says screw you the first week working there. so I bounce back to my rusty trusty dakota also all fine and dandy 12mpg, py brakes, rear diff howling like crazy. That truck is on borrowed time and no real money to fix it right now, oh well drive it till it pukes and luckily it hasnt. Im a home owner now by default. still talking to mortgage companies to get the numbers settled. for a while I was the only income in the house my little lady has been recovering from a very bad kidney infection that was creeping everywhere. We had a friend that needed a place to live that works for CSX as a conductor. SURE! now shes got a job at the car lot that we got her audi from a year or so ago. and she told me to come in and look at trucks cause the owner said he could get me one for a really decent price. I had a settlement check from moms life insurance policy coming my way so I decided to take a look and see what I could get my paws on that would be reliable and wouldnt kill me too bad at the pump. (note ive been driving an hour to work one way with a truck that gets 12mpg, so anything is better than that.) I walked the lot and found a few trucks that I liked but none of them really fit my criteria i suppose you'd call it. I wanted a 4 door fullsize TRUCK cloth interior, v8, 4x4 and somthing that I wouldnt get tetb-hole from just by looking at it. Well I stumbled across a 2000 Silverado that fit very closely to the idea I had in my head. its not a crew cab, but it is a 4 door. I asked if I could take it around the block a couple times I did it and fell in love with it. Its a 5.3L which Ive never had the experience of playing with. Im absolutely astounded by the power this HEAVY truck has, it really scoots. This is one of the smallest v8's aside from the 302's Ive had and its impressed me. the mileage it has is the only reason it was still on the lot. It has 231k on it. and by the looks of it was very well maintained. and very rust free.

The only things I dont like about it are the color, push button 4x4, and the fact that the rear speakers dont work for some reason lol I replaced all the speakers yesterday anyway so its something in the wiring. or maybe even the radio. oh well it doesnt really concern me at this particular moment.

Well without further ado, here she is.

Now if only I could sell my comanche and the 88 bird, I would be sitting pretty and have some money for some much needed mods to it.

I hope its a good truck for you.  I have had many silverados, 96,00 and 06.  Have always treated me good.

Great truck for the $$....the 5.3 will run forever.  No rust...you are ahead of every 2000 silverado owner here in Michigan.

Congrats....

Travis

5.3 is a very good engine.

Those trucks literally break in half up here in the rust belt. Guy I work with has a 2000, exact same truck as yours. the frame is plated from the front cab mounts to the rear bumper, and the box sides are flapping in the wind :rollin:

Congrats, and welcome to the Chevy Truck world. I've got an '04 Avalanche and love it. The 5.3 is a great engine, and I get better mileage with this heavy-ass truck than I did with my old Dakota.

Couple of this to be on the lookout for: Brake lines rot, rear frame rust (especially the round crossmembers that the gas tank and shocks are attached to), and front wheel bearings. Other than those problems these trucks are excellent - for 1999-2010 model years I'd take a Chevy over any other truck.

I like it alot the underside is just as clean as everything else. This is my first nice vehicle. But ive never paid more than 1000 for a car in my life lol. I could swing 5k for this one.

The only issue im having at the moment is the front end has a little shimmy in it. Makes the steeringwheel shake a touch.

Nice truck for the miles and year!  Looks like someone really took care of it.  We've had a couple 1/2 ton GM's here at work that pretty much pull a 16' trailer daily delivering compact tractors, lawn mowers, etc and we've put well over 200k on them.

As much as I love my Fords, I may have to agree here to a point.  I'd say GM was better 1999-2006, but went downhill '07+.  I had a '99 F150 and a '01 F150 supercrew and I loved both trucks, but they had the 5.4 and it really was a dog compared to my buddies GM trucks with 5.3's.  The 5.3 had more power and got better MPG too.  I decided to jump ship and try a GM in 2009...bought a new 2010 Silverado Z71 w/5.3.  The next year Ford came out with the 5.0 and the Ecoboost...to this day I wish I would have waited a year and bought a F150.  When GM changed body styles in '07 or so they really cheapened up their trucks.  The interior is rental car cheap and the sheet metal seems to be extremely thin.  The paint seems to be very thin as well and pr0ne to scratching too.

On top of all that it is saddled with 3.08 gears and cylinder deactivation.  It really is frustrating to drive (shifts constantly).  Its a great looking truck with a great motor but that's really about it.  If I could trade straight up for a 2011 F-150 5.0 I'd be all over it!

That's why I said up to '09. Starting in 2010, when Ford dropped the 5.0 into the F150, I'd pick the Ford over the Chevy. If I were to buy brand new, it'd be Dodge, simply because they're giving them away. $24,995 locally for a 2015 Ram 1500 4X4 SXT quad cab with the Hemi. No other truck can come close, price-wise.

My work truck is a chevy 2500he, single cab 6.0 with an auto. It gets 14mpg all freeway with a light trailer. My old 98ish f250 with a 5.4 would get 16mpg towing a 10k+ lb mini excavation with trailer. I also had a higher mileage 2500 with the 6.0 and it could barely get 13mpg with a air compressor on the back.

Im honestly a bit disappointed in the 6.0 as a whole, but i would buy one over a newer f_150.

I have a 6.0, its a gas hog.  I am thinking about a tune to help it out.  Have heard good things about Diablew custom tune with Intune tuner.
