Title: Turbo Mark VII Time
Post by: DetroitStyle on November 20, 2014, 10:24:13 PM
Picked this car up for $800 a few months ago and have started the winter project on it. Its going to be a small turbo, street car that should be some fun.

The day it came home.

Had to take the loaner wheels off it so, they could go back to a Capri.

For the charge piping to fit, I had to cut out a useless piece of the fender apr0n.

It needs a different coupler for the throttle body but, that'll come in due time.

Got the intercooler installed even though, its far to small for the job.

I've been going back and forth on getting a two new Mark 7 engine harnesses or putting in a Mustang harness since, the connectors for the o2, ignition module and such were burnt to a crisp for some reason. The car doesn't have air ride or emissions and more so those bug chunks of wire are useless any how.

Started taking the interior out to get rid of the dead weight and realized, the seats weight a metric ton. The quest for Kirkeys and a way to mount them has started.

Call me dumb, and I am too lazy to google it, but are you putting a turbo on a stock engine? Can you do that? Well obviously you can, but is it going to be able to hold up?

It'll be fine until the 500whp mark then, its a ticking time bomb.

My care level for this motor is at the point, I'm not turning hte boost down. It will remain where ever the 15lb spring in the gate and, the boost controller from the last car limit boost at.

Nice. When the block splits dump in a 351W. That should handle the boost better ;).

I've got a Mark VII kicking around as well. Paid $800 for it about two years ago.

Whos turbo kit?
It is/was an On3 kit, it's been changed to work with a different engine combo.

What are you doing for engine management?
To get it up and running, it will be on Megasquirt and then later on, it will move onto something in the FAST/Big Stuff world.

I have Stingers PIMP....which is microsquirt verses the full blown megasquirt...

Its pretty slick, well supported by Shannon and Wes.

I havent really used it yet...

I have an On3 351 kit...

The only update thus far is, I broke a Tox bit trying to get the seat belt bolt out of the trans tunnel last night.

I do need to get the carpet out so, I can take it to the other side of the state for a good cleaning.

Lou, you don't need that car.  I do though...  Sell it to me!

The paint is shot. It needs new front fenders (the rear portion in front of the door is rotten due to the sunroof drains) and the area above the rocker behind the door replaced (sunroof drains again). However it has rust free doors, hood, trunk lid and the rockers are pretty solid. Underbody and frame rails/shock towers are solid as well.

You want it? Come get it ;).

Yeah, what thunderjet302 said.... after the big bang, build up a 5.8 with forged pistons of the proper compression height for turbocharging. If you can find an HD block like from a motorhome conversion van, they are better castings for the high loads of boost and they should have "big valve" heads.

Yeah, that all sounds slow to me. The current thought is a Dart based small block with some good heads (there is a pair of Yates C3s locally that have been taunting me) and in the boost friendly 12-13:1 compression and of course, a larger turbo.

The fitment of a 351w under the hood is a huge pain in the a$$.  I know.  If i had to do it over i would use an upgraded 302 block and just through lots of boost at it.  Oh well live and learn.

Thanks,

Travis

P.S.  maybe next year ill come down to milan to make a pass....it would be fun.

Make sure that the K-Member is designed for the 94-95 spindles and not the 96+ spindles.  If it can use either then sell the 94-95's as they are highly sought after on the Mustang boards and get yourself a set of the 96+ spindles.  Easy way to make some $$$ and move the build along.

Ripped the old carpet out and found, rust free floors. Sadly, I wanted to keep the carpet but, it ripped in some very visble areas when I pulled it out.

Looks about as big as the one I had when I was in my apartment so pretty standard.  I made it work to pull the T-5 out of my Coupe and put a new clutch in so its workable just not fun.  I borrowed a buddy's creeper so I could at least get to the front and the back of the car rolling under it.  Glad I had the larger jack stands for sure!

Decided to get the interior started since I need to get an engine hoist to pull the motor out, to install the suspension stuff.

Got part of the sound deadening out with nothing more than a putty knife and my hands. Also, that is the insulation from the 1/4 glass area, so much insulation.

Let's catch this up a little.

Saying good bye to the electric brake system.

The worst part about putting a 4g63 into this car is, figuring out what wires have to stay and which can go. The majority of this harness is for the air ride and brake system which, is all controlled from the trunk.

I think, it's safe to say the car may never run again... After taking the sheers to the harness to speed up the harness destruction.

Got a little work done tonight, the air ride/brake harness is almost out (just need to take it out of the trunk and fish it through to the cabin). Sorted out the last few wires that were in the harness that ran up to the battery isolator and some relays and, removed the blower box.

It cleans up well but, there is still a lot of dirt built up where the wire harnesses use to be placed.

Picked up a free motor, needless to say  I found out why it was pulled out of the truck it was in. One rod is loose and has vertical play at the big end. So, its off to be cleaned and freshened up.

This is one sweet build you have going on
I love those wheels you have on the front, will the rears be chromed too?
Also what made you choose those rear Springs?

The rears at some point will be the 15" versions for the front wheels but, that is when I get another set of 10.5s for the street.

The rear springs, I am not at the point I want to get too crazy with the rear end, they are great made for the expected weight of the car and the fact that Team Z is local it makes for a great choice.

Cool man, Yea the reason I asked about the rear Springs is because a lot of people including myself use stock sn95 or moog replacement Springs
Looks like Team Z now might have a good alternative for cars with a stock (style) setup
How many inches from the stock height will those Springs drop the rear end of the car

It's a Nikon D7000 with assorted lenses, 99% of the pictures in this thread are done with the Tokina 11-16 2.8 Pro.

I also run BaconMedia which is probably the only reason I haven't sold the camera to fund the car.

In the Mark VII, who knows (I'd guess that is the same response I'd give for the other big body Fox cars). For all I know, they may lift the car from where it was on the coil spring conversion. After talking to Dave (owner of Team Z), I chose them based on the expected weight of the car when its all said and done. At this rate, I may put it on coil overs before that point. :D

On a SN95 they are said to give 1.5-2" of drop.

Well, its ready to go to the chassis shop. Depending on how the car sits with the rear control arms that are being made for it, I may go back to the old springs to lower it.

I have never attempted THAT....I'm 135 lbs soaking wet myself...but I have done many other similar things by myself that I really shouldn't have. And I definitely didn't get away with them all. Most...but not all. When I do stuff I wanna do it NOW. Not in an hour not in 10 minutes, NOW. And I hate bothering friends/family anyway. I need to get past that.

There are also like 6 to 7 83' - 88' birds and a few same year cougars. No good interiors though :mad:

Wow.

That Pacer is awesome. That's all I have to say.
Is there any strength advantage to going through the floor with the connectors? Would definitely help hide them from sight a bit.

There is a benefit just with the material size which, is 2x2 or 2x3 box compared to the 1x1 and some times smaller that you see with the bolt on/weld in kits from pretty much every company. You also see an advantage with the connectors being in the sub frames and being welded not only to the sub frames but, being integrated into the floor, floor braces and the torque boxes. They also get tied into the rockers for even more rigidity.

I have the Global West lower subframes and Griggs Racing upper subframes on my '83 and I can tell you for a fact that the six point cage made zero difference in the stiffness of the chassis.  You can jack the care up on on corner and the jack will pick the care up to the point that only the far opposite tire is on the ground and the doors will open and close perfectly.  I chose the GW lowers as they go on the outside of the subfame so they do not kill any ground clearance.

Been following this and cannot wait to see the chassis work completed.  I have toyed with mini tubing my car but I am going to see if I can stuff some 315's under it without going to that extreme first.

Time to make a new way of mounting the seat, it sits far to high to be usable.

Recently, I had a snow tire let go on the beater and having killed two factory 18s, I decided to order to wheels for it. Downfall, no one had them in stock due to the bolt pattern. Well, the new wheels came in today so, I swapped the tires from the factory 18s over and put them on the car.

The rear coil overs came in yesterday and I put them on today. It is safe to say that with no weight in the car, I'll have to raise it up about an inch and do some fender work.

Team Z is having a 10% off sale this week which includes their tube lower core support. That would open up some nice space.

Only doing the lower doesn't make a whole lot of sense. It doesn't really save much weight and, doesn't open up enough where you really need it.

Figured that I'd knock out some work today so, here are the mid evening update. The column support is out, the main harness is about ready to be fully pulled out of the car and, the parking brake assembly is gone for good.

Parking brake cable is dying to get out of there.

Well, for a first attempt at a large panel mold, i don't think its too terrible. There is a lot of room for improvement but, not horribly terrible.
