Title: Did any '83 Turbo Coupes come from the factory with an automatic trans ?
Post by: 83-88T-Bird Guy on September 17, 2014, 01:34:44 PM
I see where NHRA has the '83  TC listed as manual trans only.

They list the 84's with stick and automatic.

Sure would be nice if they allowed automatics on the '83s.

Automatics were not available in 83 Turbo Coupes and to the best of my knowledge none came from the factory with automatics.  The only chance of finding an 83TC with and auto would be a very late production car unless the automatics weren't available until sometime into 1984 production.

It would be interesting to find the earliest production 84 with the 'new' AT.

Thanks.
I have the factory '83 service manuals for the T-Bird and Mustang and the books only show the 5 speed manual.

So I take it the '83 Mustang turbo 2.3 only came with a 5 speed as well.

However, NHRA allows an auto with the '83 Mustang 2.3Turbo.
Strange.
Wonder who got that approved ?

I just did some reading, the only year a turbo 2.3 in a Mustang could have an auto trans was 1980. Also, 1982 was the only year you couldn't get a turbo.

That's interesting.
I would have thought the '84 Mustang would have had the same auto as the TC.

I just found another oddity in the NHRA classification guide.

A 1985 Cougar LS is allowed to run the 302 4 bbl Mustang engine with a stick trans only.

It is the only Fox Cougar/T-Bird that can run a carb/stick deal.
Odd, since none of those cars ever came with a V-8 stick or a carb.

I see.
So no fuel injected 2.3 turbo Mustangs or Capris ever came with an automatic.

Turbo was available in 1982, just not in the US.  I have a few turbo 1982s in the database....one GL, couple of GLXes (one coupe and one hatch), and a couple of GTs.  And those are just the ones that I have found.  There were over 300 turbo Mustangs that year, and over 200 turbo Capris as well
