Title: i figured it out
Post by: T-BUCKET on May 08, 2014, 01:02:07 AM
I think I finally figured out how to fix  the 3.8 problem. you see, 1st I drain all the fluids and start the engine until it POPS, then I drop this 5.0 in it!!!  pretty simple I think.

Yep, that's a great start. Make sure you have everything you need to swap the engine and other parts first. Then, pop away.

I had this same 5.0 in a mitubishi might max at one time, I suppose I can make it work in a t-bird! lol

I feel bad for having a 5.0L in my Turbo Coupe.  If I had the choice and funds it would be a 2.3L instead.  Now if my car came with a 3.8L I would pop it and put something different in.  Not that the 3.8's are terrible, but you really don't get much of a gain in MPG for it to be worth driving a six cylinder.

If you've got a 3.8, and want to have fun, and not make a mess (by spilling fluids), simply cut the fan belt off during a hot day, and go for a drive. Engine heats up, headgaskets fail, and presto; step one of V8 swap is started..lol

Here's another idea: Lay a tarp out in the driveway, drive your car up onto it. Drain all but a quart so oil out, and add a couple handfuls of sand. Start car, and hold the rpm to about 2000-2500. Oh yeah, have a vid cam going to record the carnage for us.

The tarp will keep the EPA off our asses ;)

I'm tempted to do this to the 4 banger in the Mustang, but it's actually a decent runner for a 2.3, so I'm going to try to sell it for a few bucks..

All this talk of 3.8 abuse might start to make me cry :(

The sad thing is how capeable a 3.8 can really be, thanks to the sc and newer mustangs.

just wait another 10 years when those 305hp v-6 stang engines start hitting junk yards and start smoking all of our old fashioned and built 302's.

id be really tempted to build up a sc 3.8 like the old bbk instacharger kits. 2" exhaust tubing, throttle body linkage and you got a cheap and quick supercharger.

Yeah I've seen a couple Coyote's but I don't think anyone's done the 3.7 swap yet...

I was really contemplating doing this, around here people are selling good running 5.0 HO's for around 5-800 complete
I paid 6 bills just for Pistons for my TC and it's been such a pain to get them and they are still a month away

there's nothing wrong with the 3.8.. gets good gas mileage, runs well, and you already know your not a power house so having said that then there arent any issues.
for all the bashing the 3.8 gets about HG failure, 25 years later they are still around,, gotta tell you something.

coming soon your engine will be subject to a virus because we all are going to eventually be cloud served web connected to eachother.

I never had a problem with the 3.8, the 88 is the better of the two to have simply for the bolt on adder 4.2L rotating parts. The 4.2L are in junk yards all the time but its nice to know 3.8 guys have a very cheap upgrade choice.
