I hate you Craigslist. Seriously, why is it so rare to find good photos of stuff for sale on that site? This is a perfect example of when good photos will help.....

Not a single interior shot? Man this would be a good car.

Wow that's about as good as it gets right there. Love the turbines. All I would do is get rid of the cheap-o brand white letter tires, tint the windows, and drive it.

With that py lighting, it looks like a color shifting red, fade to orange.
Probably is a awesome car. My brother had one just like it, back in the day.

It's not the lighting so much as the cameras inability to properly white-balance. They're white fluorescent bulbs which for any camera produced in the past 5 years SHOULD be easy. They seem a wee bit blurry which means the flash was set to off on these hand held old cell phone pics.... even still I can tell those tail lights are spotless! I STILL have the unused OEM lenses and a very good set of housings. Gonna take the lenses off the housings and put these new ones on and put them on my car. The ones I have on there now are in great shape, but when I put the unused ones next to them, the difference is abundantly clear.
I wish to know more about that pickup as well.

There is a 20th Anny with a ton of small louvers on a custom hood, lowered, with "basketweave" BBS-style gold wheels on it on LI, or at least was. Was on ebay for several years, most recently saw it on CL for $5k, lowest he got. Claimed 19k miles. The wild ebay listing from way back definitely proved it, IMO with soooo many pictures. Have you ever seen it? The listing has been gone for months...maybe it got sold...
This is equally impressive.

like at work, the more tech there is, the less tech people are.
i seriously have to explain to people how to resize pictures all the time using MS picture manager. otherwise they end up attaching like 20) 3mg pictures and wonder why the email "wont go".
these are something different though, something is odd with the paint color... just saying. hope its an honest add and not a repaint. ive heard that oem color and my 20th is absolutly hard to reproduce... not just from local painters but even at the dealer.

Red in general might be real hard. My friend's dad fixed rust "work" that I had done elsewhere in the rear lower quarters. Clearcoat was done by accident (lack of historical knowledge I suppose let's say!) for the entire passenger rear quarter. He went to blow dust off it with the airgun and the clear just flaked EVERYWHERE. I told him after jokingly "what da eff did ya do that for!!!!!? body dust everywhere of course it's gonna get dirty in your garage" haha. But the way he is, he had to make things right. So basically losing his shorts on it (I gave him extra cash, couldn't let that be) he did a "quick-and-dirty" paint match to the roof, door and trunklid. He spent either a couple hours or more dabbing little doses of "tint", whatever the material really is, into the mix and then putting a spot on each panel, let dry, check, lather rinse and repeat...
In flourescent light in the garage, I can see the difference if I really look for it, from the right angle (straight on basically). Any other quick glance, I don't see it immediately. No one else would ever know. If we did it all again and I paid him what it was worth, he'd sit his ass there until it was perfect, and I know he'd make it happen. I gotta learn this stuff from him, or maybe my friend will. He has taught him some, but he's just a bitter ol' guy sometimes, so it's tough. But he won't be around forever...

It's Crayola red-orange!
All joking aside it looks nice. Hopefully with that price it will stay out of "beater" status.

Id buy it for a daily driver if I had the cash. not all daily drivers are beaters. I don't see a point in a car you can't drive down a dirt road or lean on when you fill it up with gas.

Nothing wrong with doing those things IMO...what's wrong is of course, salt. Or even water really in some cases. I would guess that most of these cars suffer from water leakage somewhere, leading to either stained upholstery or hidden rust.

When I say beater I mean a car that isn't maintained and let go. IE: body damage is not repaired and maintenance is deferred/not preformed. There is nothing wrong with driving a car every day. A daily driver doesn't have to be a beater.

He started out asking just under 20 thousand dollars for the thing. Over about 3 years or so he came down a thousand at a time, kept watching it. Reality finally set in LOL

Been talking to this guy all week. I asked him for more pictures to include shots of the interior and engine. I'll share them below.
I ran the VIN through CARFAX and the last title/registration entry was in Sep 2009 where the mileage was recorded as 16,200. He claims the mileage was recorded wrong at time of sale. Perhaps...
The car looks clean and I'm tempted to purchase a ticket to Toledo for an inspection. Anybody in the area?

that duds camera sux,, now the car looks like tomato juice,, however,, I think your about to score big time!!! maybe this one fell through the cracks and it is actually low miles. sure as hell looks like someone rolled the clock back to 1990 to me. good luck on this.
somehow It seems like there are hints of a repaint here,, seeing some good quality work but there are a few items that look to have small tads of overspray that makes me wonder,, even in the engine bay.
im prob wrong though.... great looking car. If we are looking at it this close it must be a great deal.

theres that CD changer I keep telling everyone about in my trunk!!!! it was my understanding that it was a dealer option you could buy ,, if the dealer wanted to mess with doing the offering..... I may be wrong but that's exactly the same unit I have.
mine is mounted on the right hand side of the trunk though,, not back there.

KDC-C710 KDC-C660/C KDC-560

Those seats don't seem commensurate with the mileage - the cracking and the lower side bolster bowed out. Unless maybe it was daily driven on 5-mile round trips or something like that. The fan shroud has no stickers but I guess someone could have removed them. Something seems odd about the glimmer from the shock towers and it doesn't appear to be from the blurriness of the photos from slow shutter speeds. Definitely look closely if someone goes to check it out.
The driver side seat belt receptacle is intact though.
I remember that maroon turbo manual car that was for sale here for a long time that finally got bought only for the buyer to flip it for a profit on ebay. That was a genuine 9K or 15K-mile car or whatever the mileage was. I think it was 15K miles.

Shouldn't the lettering on the upper intake plate be natural aluminum instead of black? That plate may have been repainted.

Is that zip tie holding the gauge/dash trim on or holding the keys to it? Wonder what caused the gauge/dash trim to get busted if that's the case?
py pictures just about always are done to hide stuff. The seat belt receptacle being intact is good but all eight of mine are still intact and the only one to break on me happened around 190,000 miles.
This car could be great but compared to that maroon turbo five-speed, it just doesn't add up. Hopefully someone on here that is close enough to look at it without costing themselves much in travel or time can thoroughly check it out.

Ok here are some under hood shots on a seemingly genuine car with far more mileage and to me, this seems more genuine under the hood (I wouldn't pay $15K but just for comparison...):
I also just realized the upper radiator support on that red '88 doesn't have any stickers either. That build tag has been messed with as well. It was once bent, probably like the '87, but has been flattened out and repositioned.

Looks like a repaint to me. Paint under the hood is a different color and all the exterior trim has been painted.

The engine bays just aren't THAT shiny :) And it's certainly common to find areas of the engine bay that only have the grey primer...very haphazard spray on the assembly line in some cases.

I've been texting the owner (no voice comms). His name is Anthony Ostrowski. Here's his reply to my question on the low miles: "The car belonged to a friend of my fathers and he never drove it. About three years before I bought it I noticed that he put the car outside after keeping it in the garage for almost twenty years and it was completely neglected for those three years. So I offered to buy it. I have not driven it either."
His response to my querry on price: "I'm firm at $6,000 as the car has generated a lot of interest."
I asked if the car is a consignment based on the CL pictures of the car parked in a show-room. His reply: "A friend of mine is allowing me to show it in his store."
CARFAX report shows the last title transfer was Sep 2009.
After careful consideration I decided the car does not present as an ultra low mileage example and the price is not right either. The deal breaker for me are the seats. Waaaaay too much wear to include the 100K mile distended side bolster.
I purchased my 88 XR7 with a claimed 53K miles and you can see the difference in the interior: http://www.foxtbirdcougarforums.com/showthread.php?35026-Check-Out-My-88-XR7-Purchased-From-EBay-(53K-original-miles)&highlight=

Geez, that one still has the sticker on the passenger side valve cover!

It appears that it may have been painted with a spray can, a brush, or some combination of the two. The color everywhere else on the car seems to match. This isn't even CLOSE. There does in fact appear to be some rather rough spots on the shock towers. My car's been through a lot. Most of it BEFORE my owning it. My shock towers are in better shape than that.
Looking further into the car I notice the brake prop block..... That's a part that really doesn't get much sun or weather over a 16,000 mile life with a stock non-TC hood. I would think that it would fair better than the one in my car which is one of the very few original pieces left under the hood with 225K miles on the car. They look nearly identical....

Should look like this: (http://www.coolcats.net/fox/images/50lv8.jpg)
I have suspicions now.... I think that there may be an outside shot that this product we are discussing is the result of 2 or more vehicles. Looking at the picture that shows the close up of the front fender well; the lower fender below the moulding leads credibility to the car being repainted.

More things I found wrong under the hood (besides the intake plate):
All under hood decals are gone.
The IAC valve has been changed (no cast in Ford oval on the top). Why? The 134K mile one on my Thunderbird works fine.
The A/C defiantly has been changed over to R-134A. Look at the fittings. Plus there are tool marks on the A/C lines on the compressor.
The transmission cooler line is bent back toward the engine. It should be snug to the radiator. Not sticking out as far as it does.
The rubber hood stoppers don't have paint over spray on them. My Thunderbird and every other Fox Thunderbird/Cougar I've ever seen has paint over spray on the tops of the rubber hood bumpers. Why are those so clean?
Distributor boot is missing.

I think the radiator support was pushed in and the whole car repainted when it was still fairly new. this would explain almost all the discrepancies.

I think it's more and more likely that this Cougar was in some sort of front end collision when fairly new and it was repaired. It would have had to have been a long time ago as any major damage it sustained in the last 10-15 years would have caused the car to be a write off.

Definitely see that as a possibility but the seats don't fit the mileage. Maybe the red seats don't lend themselves to fair pictures but then there's that bolster that seems more bowed even if it were adjusted all the way out. Also maybe the engine was pulled and the bay was repainted while it was out. Also either some ziebart was painted over in the engine bay or there was some rework from an accident. Any number of possibilities I suppose but there's definitely more to the history than is being let on. It could be a fine driver but anyone here considering a purchase should at least have this in their mind when looking it over. No one likes bad surprises after the purchase.

Something is definitely up with this Cougar. The only thing I can figure for the seat wear is that the seller mentioned it was parked outside for a couple of years. Maybe it's sun induced wear but I doubt it.

I thought that too but then something made me pause but I forget what that other thought was. I wonder how the top of the dash looks. I also wonder if this guy has two red Cougars and the nice parts, including the seats, went to the other car. I sound like all the people throwing theories out there about the missing 777.

It's a mystery but this car is defiantly not "all original" or "just like off the dealer lot". Something has happened to it in the past.
