Title: 1987 Cougar XR-7 Thoughts, opinions, feedback please.
Post by: MY83T on February 22, 2014, 01:10:02 PM
This car if i pull the trigger is going to be a light use daily driver, local in town a few times a week, and double as a hobby, cruise night car until funds permit me getting the Bird back together post flood. Just wanted thoughts or opinions on this car from you guys. Its a 1987 XR-7 Well equipped, and only 72,000 original miles. Going to run me 2k and he is very firm on the price. Needs nothing, cold AC, new tires, recent tune up, no mods, and Leather Interior with full console, floor shifter, dual power seats etc. As far as i can tell, it only is missing the factory EQ, and Sunroof. Here are some pics, i need to decide today/tomorrow so all thoughts are welcome......

Yeah he's listed it a couple times on the bay. I don't think the bid even hit 2k either time. But that's fair for that vehicle, it's clearly nice and 72k is honestly impressive.

Its fair for any car thats turn key and mechanically sound. The fact that its a low mileage v8 foxbody ford, is just a bonus! Totally original car as well, no mods of any kind.

Looks like a nice car...

Ok guys, just walked in the door, drove an hour + getting her home. Here are my overall impressions of the car.
The Good:
1. Drove like a brand new car. 2. Car was as nice or nicer than described by the seller. 3. Shifted tightly and perfectly. 4. Heat was awesome 5. Stereo is all stock and sounded perfect with the cassette adapter for my iPod. 6. Power everything worked perfectly. 7. Leather is perfect, near flawless, lumbars worked perfectly. 8. Gauges were spot on, speedo was in perfect sync with the speed on my GPS. 9. Not a single rattle or squeak on the inside. 10. Doors opened and closed perfectly and with a solid thud. 11. All weather strip is perfect, i mean PERFECT, window sweeps, felts etc. 12. Beltline moldings were flawless and the chrome strips were perfect, no oxidation anywhere. 13. Rims are super clean, no rash. 14. Alignment was near perfect, car drove laser straight. 15. Cruise Control was flawless. 16. Trunk is mint, has rubber mat also! :-) 17. Console plate is perfect and intact, no lifting and no screws through it to make it flat. 18. Perfect Headliner, carpet, floor mats, and vanity mirrors. Dash looks like showroom new, door pulls are tight and perfect, and rear package tray is perfect. Interior has almost no discernible fading.
The Bad
1. Rearview Mirror needs to be re-silvered 2. Seat belt receiver plastic is toast as with all these cars. 3. Needs a new power antenna, works ok, just won't go up and down. 4. tiny crack in plastic trim above the passenger door where it meets the headliner 5. One tine nickel sized rust spot, (no rot) on the passenger rear quarter just above the moldings. 6. One horribly touched up scratch on passenger door, with the wrong color silver touch up paint pen. 7. Hood light wiring was torn out at some point. 8. Cougar Trunk badge is missing. XR-7 Badge is fine.
Overall i would say that this car rates this way:
Overall a solid 8 of 10
Paint 7 1/2
Interior 9
Mechanical 9
cool factor 15 +

I've never had a problem with the EATC in my Thunderbird. I've got some spare parts just in case though ;).
The moon roof yeah I hate those. My Mark VII has one. The SOB leaked till I went through it and cleaned all the drains out. That took a whole Saturday. Plus the motor sometime decides it doesn't want to work anymore. I should have waited for one without a moon roof but hey it was cheap :hick:.

What I hated about the eatc was setting the heater up EVERY TIME I took the key out of the ignition. quick trip to the gas station, get back in and its reset to 70* and turns the ac on in the middle of winter.

Dave spun by my house last night and I saw this gem in person. Very solid car. I was impressed with how whisper quiet it was running. I had forgotten how quiet they are in stock form. I'm not just talking exhaust note, but from under the hood as well. NOTHING. Congrats Dave! What lot is that where you stopped to take pictures?

Mine has never done that. It will flash every once in a blue moon and after warming up will be fine. Other than that it's been good to me in all the years I've had it.

I'm always amazed at how quiet a stock 5.0 is. The one in my Mark is whisper quiet. The engine in my Thunderbird is quiet but not as quiet as the one in the Mark VII. I attribute that to the roller rockers on the Thunderbird. They make a swish, swish, swish noise that the stock rockers don't make. I can only hear them with the hood open and leaning into the engine bay. The Mark is almost dead silent in comparison.

I had the window open on my truck earlier and happened upon a lady starting an '86 Grand Marquis. THe car was in decent shape, appeared never to have been hit, with clean headlamp housings. It was a wee bit noisy.

Good save! Nice to see a good one go to a person who will enjoy it and keep it nice, or at least tastefully modded. The '84 coupe I'm slowly assembling will be much the same way...not a part installed that's not coated, painted, or polished. Not to be show-worthy, just to last another 30 years, barring some idiot driver hitting it. (if I ever get it done)

I think that is a great car for a good price. I really like that body style, they are very well insulated and quiet down the road. I really hope you enjoy it, that is what its for.... I dont see any on the road in this area, except mine occasionally. Wish mine had the sport seats, its just a LS.

Cougar guys or 87/88 guys, quick question...... what should be the turn signal flashing speed for these cars? Rapid blink or slow steady?
Title: 1987 Cougar XR-7 Thoughts, opinions, feedback please.
Post by: Beau on February 25, 2014, 08:30:06 PM
A slow steady, I think. If it's fast, probably needs a new flasher in the fuse panel.
Title: 1987 Cougar XR-7 Thoughts, opinions, feedback please.
Post by: mcb82gt on February 25, 2014, 08:35:40 PM
Definitely not fast, not sure how to describe it.....
Or could be a bunt out bulb??? Unless Im thinking about my Chevy trucks??????

Not rapid but a decent pace for the blink. Pretty much like any other car. If it's fast you probably have a bulb out.

If it's too slow you need to get rid of that heavy duty flasher relay somebody installed in your fuse box. If it's a rapid blink you have a burned out bulb.
