Title: Having trouble with hex heads on the FPR
Post by: BLKBRD88 on February 17, 2014, 05:23:54 PM
Anybody have a hint of what type of hex head wrench works best to remove the inside hex bolt on the FPR of an 88 TC?
I am having a time trying to get that bugger out.......
because none of my Allen Wrenches fit on & still have room to turn more than about 1/64th of a turn at a time.

I was really hoping that no one would suggest that, but thanks, you are probably correct.

This little project may have to wait a week or so because the car has to function enough to shift it around our yard since we have family coming this weekend with a motor-home & a large fifth wheel trailer.

I changed mine yesterday using a regular 4mm allen wrench.  It was fairly easy because I had the upper intake and alternator off.  You might consider removing them to get it done.  I can usually have the intercooler, intake, and alternator off in under 15 minutes.

That might be worth a try. Is there a gasket or anything that needs to be replaced when the upper intake is removed?

Be fore warned any regulator other than the stock one will eventually break the rail mount under the regulator and you will have a nasty fuel leak. I always modify the rail to prevent this. The bigger heavier regulators will do this and reinforcing the rail is a must. Just something to think about!!!

Thanks for the tip Tom.
What are the reasons that a person would want to use a heavier, larger regulator?
I bought the replacement at Autozone, it is supposed to be like the original.

I have a Kirban Adjustable Fuel Pressure regulator. No isses at all. I don't know that I NEEDED the Kirban piece, but at the time I needed a new FPR and it was new, and dirt cheap, so, why not?

BUT!!!!!!!!!!! You do not have a 2.3 Vinnie. The 5.0 does not have that issue totally different setup. If it is a stock setup you are ok. But a heavier unit like a KIRBAN will split the rail on the mounting plate on a 2.3. Photo above is a 2.3. The poster has a 2.3 as i read it!!! Either way reinforcing the rail is a must when i do them. Cheap insurance.

FPR is replaced and my TC is running great with a good idle.
We had to loosen the upper intake & fuel rail to get it in.

Thanks to all of you who helped with suggestions!
