like the 3.8L, the timing cover is very similar except the 3.8 has the oil pump gear set built in there...kinda wish the 5.0 did the same but anyway............
i have noticed again on another 5.0 that we broke down an interesting observation.
this may be mundane old news to some of you but to me i have to ask "why" being and inquisitive toddler that i am :)
like the heads, there are alignment dowels on the timing cover,, or so i thought.
on my son's 5.0 timing cover we notice the hole for the alignment dowel is larger on the passenger side than the driver.
my real point here is two things.
On the explorer motor we broke down, the passenger side alignment "TUBE" looking thing or dowel was missing but was present on the driver side.
***this explorer motor is up and running in my son's silver bird below.
ON the bird motor we took out of the silver bird below and are tearing down, the same issue. the passanger side dowel hole is larger than the driver side ,, and,,, the passenger side had no alignment dowel.
am i literally missing something here?
There just alighnment pins. I wouldnt worry about it.
yeah,,, i thougth that also but when we assembled the explorer motor and went to put on the oil pan and gasket,,, the passanger side of the timing cover was sagging down suich that the gasket would not have sealed up as engineered or perfectly.
basically the timing cover forms flush to the base of the engine block to recieve the pan gasket. the sag was enough to cause us to loosen up our freshly placed cover, pry up on it slightly so the bottom edge passanger side would now be flush with the block.
i am asking if there should be two alignment dowels / pins on the timing cover or not.
i agree with you though,, just wanting to find out if this is normal.
the two holes are tow different sizes.
I think so but maybe Ford short cut and only installed one...
The older 302 from probably around '80 earlier didn't use dowels at all, required a alignment tool or at the least shoving the harmonic balancer on before tightening the cover... I just did one on the 306 going in my '72 Comet(actually it's installed and should get it fired in the next 10 days or so)...
oh, so you have been wrenching.. good to hear! we are to off an on in the evenings.
Yeah Comet has gone from this...

Every part in the front end. brakes and suspension is new or rebuilt...
Someone's been keeping secrets......
Looks good!
Very nice!
i swear that looks like the paint you can get from sherwin williams ,, a different line of heavy duty paint for DOT / Farm equipment.
looks great!,,, now start answering your pm's :)
Duplicolor engine paint perhaps?
I've used the stuff (my Thunderbird's block, heads, and intake are painted with it) and the stuff holds up very well. About 2 cans will do a whole engine.
Comet is looking good. Now make the Thunderbird run again ;).
You dunno how close you are to that color.. :hick: Actual color on car is Competition Gold, but not whats under hood...
I'll look at PMs, but last I checked I didn't have any(been a few days), even cleared it out maybe three weeks ago wasn't anywhere nearly full...
Some of the latest pict...
Bought this complete Street Fire ign for $60, incl box, coil, dist with cap & wires... No doubt the best deal I made in '13... Oops gotta take that back, I have $31 in that NEW Holley carb(yeah there is a story on that one)...
Mounted still need to tidy up wiring and cover with loom

The PMGR starter cables/harness is for a '96 ranger, my "chicken man" neighbor had the stuff tossed in trash... The aux fuse panel is from Painless Wiring(power for electric choke, fan, Ign system, headlight upgrade, etc) and yup that's a 2G alt that I built the harness for and plan on using... Yes has a brand new plug, was on the Bird till I up graded a few years back... The Comet electrical system is nowhere nearly as demanding as the Bird, should be fine...

Scott you need to clean your PM box, can't reply cuz it's full...
Dang You got me
I'm loving this thread by the way
It went from boring to wow
Basically Scott is correct, it't farm & implement paint...
I appreciate all the positive comments...
It's been a fun project, hopefully done in another couple months... Restoring/modding the Comet has actually had a positive effect on my wanting to get back into the Bird, maybe by May or so it will be moving again under it's own power...
Picts are current as of a couple days ago, though I have probably 25-30 other "in progress" I can post... Lemme see what's in the box of goodies...
Here's that $31 Holley carb I mentioned...
Story is a buddy gave me a seven year Holley carb(still looked almost new), said take it or I'm putting it in the trash... OK no problem I'll rebuild it for the Comet... When I opened it up, looked like it had a bad case of measles and chicken pox combined, definatly a WTF moment... After searching on net I find Holley built some bad carbs in late '05 into mid '06, yep that one was in the correct time frame... Called Holley and they said send it back, approx a week later this arrived, all I had to pay was shipping to them...

And if you like video here's the 306 breathing it's first breath...
Nut falls off the alt cuz someone forgot to tighten it, :dunno::rollin: lands under radiator...
