generally speaking,, im seriously and so stinking tired of these talking heads convincing the population that this is too cold.
I will not lie,, i seriously whitnessed at 1pm today a lady stating the following words...............and i hope i quote her correctly...this was on the weather channel..............
"its impossible to survive outside with this kind of cold, seriously people its impossible. No amount of clothing can protect you."
i had to wonder how we got here today having come from a couple ice ages and all.........
I say calm down and use your own judgement.
but........ we have proof positive the woosification of our nation is in full steam lock step mode as we scroll back a little bit and understand what kind of strong men and women we all came from had to indure.............
time to listen to some old radio............here you go..... from the 1943 Mayor of NYC~~~~~ Fiorello La Guardia

I hope this changes someones outlook on the national outbreaks of "weather stupidz" going on.
The mainstream media puts out false info all the time and a large percentage of the people just accept it as fact without question. I wonder how that lady thinks folks in Nome, or someplace in Siberia survive? Maybe they just replenish the population every spring.
Here's my opinion....from Oklahoma.....When it's winter time, it gets really cold. In the summer, it gets really hot. Easy.
They're gearing the news towards the lowest common denominator. Believe it or not there are some people who don't know they need to dress for the weather. Today it was -14* in Chicago. Without the wind chill. That was the air temperature. I had to go downtown on the El (elevated train, people on the east coast call it the subway). I wore an insulated undershirt, a sweater, heavy winter jacket, heavy gloves, a scarf, and a stocking hat. It was cold out but I was warm enough waiting on the platform for a train and walking around. I was outside waiting for a train for 20 minutes this evening. I didn't freeze to death in 30 seconds ;). There were people with lighter jackets and no hat walking around shivering. Well duh stupid it's cold. Maybe if you would dress for the weather you wouldn't freeze or get frost bite. People are stupid. The news needs to realize that stupid people are going to get frostbite or freeze to death because of their stupidity. You can't save the dumb people.
Yes I think the "OMG it's cold out" is just as dumb as the "OMG it's hot out" reporting over the summer. It's one thing to warn people but it's another to make it a headline news story.I think most people are smart enough to figure out that in the winter it's cold and it snows. They also know that sometimes it snows a lot and it gets really, really cold. They can deal with it.
It's absolutely MISERABLE but "impossible to survive"? Awwl-righty then.
Sad to say it, but I began to get used to it after the 3rd day of no higher than single digits at any given time. Then it was 47 this morning and it felt like a cool summer day to me.
I really don't mean to dismiss an entire profession, but I really can't stand journalism in general. Even stuff on jalopnik aggravates me at times. If you pay attention, you can spot the shameless self-plugs and tired old cliched useless commentary instantly. Almost as bad as a used car/classic car salesman. Yes we GET IT you're a clever writer. Now just...tell me what the "people familiar with the situation" said, and then shut up for a minute. :)
The general populace now a day would forget to breathe if it wasnt taught in schools. People arent smart enough to realize its cold adapt to stay warm. Its below -30 right now here and theres a "state of emergency" on most of the counties around us including us. You wont catch me out there right now. Common sense isnt very common anymore, if i didnt live in town i'd be playing a little more inthe snow but not for very long
^Exactly. It's winter...what the f*ck they the temps will be..warm? LOL.
Yes, this weather will kill you...if you're stupid, and drive into a blizzard and simply aren't aware that the wind and temps will cause hypothermia.
Then again, maybe these folks should quit worrying about it...you know...population control. Survival of the fittest. I saw plenty of stupidity on my way home yesterday. People trying to drive small cars into little drifts of snow, and where plows had piled it up. People, when there's 4-6 inches of stuff on the ground, and it's still pretty much a blizzard, stay the hell at home, if you're not prepared.
Prepared, to me, also includes a capable 4x4 with some ground clearance, good tires, and a solid ability to know the limitations of the vehicle and one's own abilities.
I drove 300 miles in shiznitty weather yesterday, and the only time i had any problems was when I deliberately left it in 2WD.
FWIW, the vehicle in question is a Kia Sorento. It's earned my respect...it's just as capable in snow as my beloved AWD Mountaineer. Hell, it even has low range and a "shft-able" transmission!
Now if i could just figure out to get a 5.0 in there.......
Seriously, when the temps are well below zero, and the wind chill drops it to around 25-30 below or more....is it that important to be out shaging around? Unless you're out of food or heat at home, stay indoors, and make sure your outside animals aren't suffering.
I am a lineman by trade. I mainly deal with fiber optics and coax, but guess who gets called when your cables out? when some jackass is driving too fast and takes out a telephone pole, its common for use to show up before the power company and wait for them to fix there before we can touch ours.
I used to drive a 50 mile commute everyday. didn't matter if it was snowing or not. still made it there on time, and driving my thunderbird. no snow tires or chains. just a bit of common sense. its never the old beat up.daily driver in the ditch. its someone in a truck or 4 wheel drive suv.
last winter when I was working in Montana, we put in 12-16 hour days. we were in cut bank, less then 20 miles from Canada. one morning we came out to our truck and it was sitting funny. the wheel bearings froze and blew out.it was -18, before you calculated in windchill. other was always windy there too. one day we had 97mph winds. average was 30mph in the morning and 45 in the afternoon.
guess what I did while the truck was in the shop? got our pick up truck, hand tools and my hooks and climbed poles all day instead. people just need some common sense. I was wearing $20 boots, a pair of jeans, a hoodie with a jacket over the top.
birmingham AL,,,,
2hour delays and closings for 23deg weather.
Most if not all the rural systems have done same here but excepting for maybe Suffolk, the metro areas all opened on time...
BTW it's 13* here, which is no doubt balmy compared to the western & northern states, still you ain't gonna catch my ass outside... Being it's a new year and wife now has a full amount of leave, she's staying home tonight as well...
Ha ha ha. That's a normal Dec./Jan./Feb. day here.
It must be a slow news week....
I was on another website where a guy posted a picture of his car temp gauge that read 28 degrees.....
I WANTED to reply with "Bitch, please" and post one of the 6 degrees I had. I'm sure someone else from slightly further west would have trumped me with a negative temp though, lol.
BTW, layered up today for the short periods that I WAS outside and I was SWEATING. Dress properly and you can in fact survive. Problem is that it's hard for the undomiciled to gather proper clothing in this cold, especially following rain and snowstorms....
tom~lighten up your pm box
Jeez, gotta love the doom porn. seems the world is addicted to it. My first job in the Air Force was working ICBM's in Montana. We had a job one day when it was -85 with the windchill. The equipment was failing and we spent 20 hours on site trying to green the missile up. I am STILL cold from that. LOL
Not real hateful here. Yesterday was 13 hours at work fixing the cooling system for the compressors and 3 hours outside running a 8" bypass line for a mill's heat exchanger. Was it cold? Yes. I'd I die? Nope. Dressed for the weather. Somehow I managed to survive 0 degrees with a negative god knows what wind chill. The real treat was coming home to a broken water line in my shop due to the oil gelling for the furnace, a frozen cold water line to the kitchen sink and a cold wife and 9 month old. Thank god I had off today. Did some plumbing repairs, thawed out my wife's 90lx (it was covered in ice from the pipe letting go). Another day in the record books lol.
The other day/night we had near -21. Before windchill.
It's a balmy 13 right now, and I can deal with that.
Not much you can do about it, but soldier through and be a little more ready next time..LOL
