Title: Riddle me this.... Headliners.
Post by: jandmmustangs on November 15, 2013, 05:39:53 PM
The headliner in my wife's 88 TC is shot, ripped saggy, the usual. I found and snagged a perfect 86 bird headliner (red of course). The color change isn't the problem. Obviously the front of the headliners are made differently. Will the 86's headliner fit as a temporary fix until I can find a good correct one. If it won't fit looks like I have a primo headliner for sale lol.

I've wondered the same thing, the difference is the A pillar trim and the lack of a cross trim along the top or the windshield and the top of the rear window on the 87-88. With that said I would think that it would not work without all of the trim from the 86. Definitely something to try and let the rest of us know.

I have a good grey one for a moonroof car, but I am in Virginia and shipping would be beyond belief! I also have a good standard one in blue.

Could you compare them and tell me how close they are to being the same, other than the holes for the moonroof stuff of coarse.

They are up in the attic of my garage and not together. My best guess would be that the one for the moonroof is probably a couple of inches shorter in overall height. The structure built into the roof system to install the moonroof is pretty substantial and it would make the headliner sit somewhat lower.

If the backing is in good shape why not just get a new headliner from an upholstery shop?  All they do is strip the old headliner material off, remove the rotted foam with a heavy brush, clean the backer with something to remove the old glue, spray new adhesive on it, stick the new headliner material to it, and trim the edges.

You can do it yourself if you can get the new liner and a can of 3M spray glue.

I had a fox-body Marquis back in the day with a sagging head liner. I took the backer board out, turned it inside out (it was just perforated something-like-wax-coated-cardboard). I put 3M spray adhesive on the back and glued the original fabric to the back, and installed it upside down, heh. I don't know if T-Birds are symmetrical like that, if they can be turned inside out or not. It was just a way to save money on a beater.

My problem being about 10years of the car sitting, the mice ruined the headliner backing. And finding a parts moonroofed car anywhere around here is near to impossible.

They're a pick and pull but no set price list.  Deans pricing is still fair tho.
