Title: Hello, hello
Post by: JetScreamer on September 23, 2013, 11:20:02 AM
Greetings.  New to the place. Here's some pictures of my ride that I just picked up.  1985 with 16,500 miles.  In real great shape.  All the leather is in great shape, no wear or cracks.  Interior excellent, no tears or fade. Still has factory radio and trip computer and both still work great.  Everything on the car works like new.  Lucky to have found it.

Congratulations on your purchase and welcome!

The trip computer was added by one of the previous owners as they weren't originally available on the '85 XR-7's. Not trying to bust your chops or anything, more of an FYI.

It's nice to see that it found an enthusiast and sounds like it has a good home. :D

Thanks for the welcomes.  It is very possible that it was as I did get in KCMO.  Thanks for the FYI.  Seems crazy that someone would go to the trouble to put the trip computer in, but it's cool.  I had an '84 XR7 with a 5 speed a little over 20 years ago.  I liked that car a lot, but someone had to rear end me and totaled it out.  But I did get a '68 Cougar XR7 to replace it.  It's nice to have another one.  It's like goin back in time 23 years!

I reconditioned that tripminder and sold it to the previous owner.  I built a plug and play harness for it so no wiring had to be cut and a regular clock can be swapped back in if desired.

Groovie.  Nice job on the mod and making the harness.  Do you know if the factory equalizer work with all the FM cassette radios or just certain ones?

Do you mean aftermarket radios?

That is my brothers old car.  It was very very nice.  Like Vinnie said, I wanted that interior for my car, but no dice.

He bought that tripminder from a member here with the custom harness to make it plug and play.  I told him to take it out before he sold it, but oh well.

Enjoy the car, it is very nice.  We did a full ignition tune up with all Motorcraft parts, I think a new fuel pump also.  If you ever have any questions about the car, just get ahold of me here and I will do my best to help.  He doesnt get on here much anymore.

Please enjoy and take care of the car.

Cool, that's good to know!  You all did a nice job on the car.  No, not an after market radio, I want to keep the stock radio since it works well, but a factory Ford EQ that they put in the Cougars and T-Birds of that year.

While the factory EQ was offered as an option starting in 1985, I have never seen the factory installed setup in a car. I have seen a few '86 cars with it, but it seems that it wasn’t until the 1987 model until it became fairly common.

In addition Ford re-vamped their radio line for 1986, so the correct 1985 EQ radio is a one year only unit. The head unit looks similar to the radio you have except it lacks the bass & treble s as this is adjusted via the EQ and instead of “Electronic” printed on the face it had “Premium Sound”.
The correct 1985 EQ was slightly different in its appearance from the ’86-’88 EQ as well.

If you’re not worried about having a 100% correct factory looking radio and EQ, and just want a workable EQ in the dash, it should be possible to do with a little wiring detective work as the EQ was just a passive device in between the head unit and the Premium Sound amplifier.

There are even a few members here that have re-wired the factory EQ to work with aftermarket head units.

I think they had one of the best seats back then and even for today.  They were especially great for long road trips.

Yes you can use a newer radio head unit (or pretty much any head unit) with the factory EQ and amp. I did it in my Thunderbird. I've got a JVC head unit with dual USB inputs wired into the factory EQ and amp using the RCA preouts on the rear of the unit.

Very nice Cougar. If you take care of it the car should last at least another 25 years ;).

Can you use the EQ with a factory radio if it doesn't have the Premium Sound / Amp setup?

The EQ has to be inline between the head unit and an amp. So without an amp the EQ won't function.

As a fellow XR7 owner...welcome.  Not to many of us around.  Anyways a true survivor!!!  Might have to keep that one stock...

Travis

Or do you want to mod it?

Thanks.  Oh no, I'm keeping it as stock as can be.  The only thing I would mod it with would be with option items of that year, if I could find them and if they would be worth using.  You only live once, but it does help if you get to have a Cougar twice. Or maybe three times!
