Title: Gas tank vacuum vent w/ carbon filter box - remove??
Post by: Driverguy on July 12, 2013, 04:51:57 PM
I'm putting my 3.8 back in my car, and I'm wondering what the purpose is of this big box hanging around.  I originally thought it was venting fumes from the tank into the intake for a little bit of a richer burn, but apparently this carbon filter is removing all the fumes.  Is there any reason to keep this here?  Could I bypass the box and put the gas fumes directly to the intake, or just take it all out and lave an open breather on the fuel tank?

Leave the charcoal canister as is. DO NOT REMOVE IT AND PIPE IT TO THE INTAKE!!! If not leave it out and vent to atmosphere. But it is better to leave in in place as the purge cycle will richen up the mid range and it is beneficial.

So its better to have metered ventilation than just a regular breather, is it much of a difference?  I was thinking if i left it on i could relocate the box

You can relocate it for sure. But i normally leave them hooked up and functioning.

On my old Sport, i stuck the line in a hole in the frame rail. everyone kept telling me i had turned my car into a bomb by venting the fumes into be rail but i never had any problems.

What would be the bad/dangerous side to just leaving it a breather

Well that wouldn't be too bad I guess, having a bit of gas smell.  I guess capping off the breather is not a good idea?

I think most posting on this issue do not know how this system WORKS.

1 It stores HC gas fumes by exorbing it. CHARCOAL app the equivalent of 2-3 ACRES

2 when the engine sucks the fumes out of the canister(PURGES IT) it makes the mid range a little richer.

3 It keeps the car from smelling like GAS

4 It keeps tuns of Hydro Carbons out of the atmosphere. That"s a good thing dont you think!!

makes the mix a little richer, so you mean the carbon filter doesn't filter out ALL the gas?  And I know not all cars have a system like this, that's why I was asking if it would be a bad idea to cap the vent off

The carbon canister stores the fuems and then the engine sucks it in to clean it out. Then the process repeats itself.:hick::mullet:
