So my wife says we are buying a new-er vehicle in the next month or so.
Her "requirements":
-3rd row seating
-20+ MPG
Any suggestions? She wants a minivan, but I'm trying to avoid it by any means necessary
how many kids?
both my dad and sister have newish Mazda 3's and both like them. not my cup of tea though. the new fiestas are dirt cheap.
If you want to stay in a Ford look at the Taurus X or Freestyle crossovers. I almost got one, then we ended up with 2013 Escape SEL, but no 3rd row on the Escape, otherwise i would highly recommend.
+1 for the Freestlye / Taurus X. I know three people with them and they would fit the bill very nicely. They have just about the same interior space as our 2007 Mountaineer, which BTW, we average 22 mpg on the highway with and it has the 4.6L. Not as good as the Freestyle but it might be another option for you.
do what I did. give her a budget what she can make a loan on and pay for. then when she can't find anything, buy her an 88 crown vic wagon. then she'll leave you out of embarrassment, and you can have any car you want.
at least that's what I did...
We have 2 kids and hoping for another within the next 2 years.

My wife doesn't like the styling of the Ford products*, but I've always kind of liked the Flex. Any thoughts there? They are a bit more expensive and larger than the Freestyle/Taurus X.
*editing for clarity: she trends toward mini-van or sedan rather than cross-over or SUV, and thinks the Flex is too "boxy". A shame since we have *4* kids to haul around. :D
Way more expensive for the Flex.... Cool car though
I love the Flex, and I think she would too, but they are a bit out of our price range. I may just try to trade my Jeep Cherokee for her a late 90's Grand Caravan or something. I have seen the GC's pretty cheap with lowish mileage.
I have a grand caravan (mines a 2012) it's a great van best looking in my opinion. The older ones are nice too, I get about 20 mpg depending on who drives it.
That's one of the problems here. i can get in my cherokee on 33s and stock gears and get 19mpg... wife gets in it and gets 10. She drives it like a race car, accelerates hard and runs 70 everywhere she goes... i drive it like an old man easing into the gas and running 50 everywhere i go.
