you can use stang ones, but you have to re-drill one of the holes. not sure id want an extra hole in the already thin metal that holds the.car up...

the mm plates cost like $10 more for the bird then a stang.

BOB Nailed it.  MM makes the correct ones. For what it is worth i use them all the time. From what i can remember you have to transpose the plates to use the mustang ones.

I have the MM units on both of my cars. My Griggs dealer recommended the MM units for the Bird even though the rest of the suspension is Griggs.

One other note is to have the alignment shop use the recommended settings in MM's instructions. They might argue but insist on it. They would not test drive my Coupe after they set it up at Firestone due to all of the "owner modifcations". I about passed out from laughing but I do understand. The alignment tech apologized and said he really wanted to take it out.
