found 97 exporer motor at my local JY,
wants 550$ for whole engine, harness and minus AC compressor and alternator.
sound like a good deal or not?
Depends on the mileage? If its a late 96 or early 97 then its got the GT40 heads...nice upgrade. The later 97 exploder motors have the GT40P heads which are good also...just you can run into some header problems...
You really dont need the harness...maybe they will discount the price abit...or the accessories... You will be reusing all your fox tbird stuff.
With a cam....premium and tune...solid 275hp motor...then your stock AOD will need help...but its the good kind of help.

My buddy has a stock bottom end exploder motor with a x303 cam with a 125 shot on it. Regular ho cam it and drop it on in buddy
what do you think mine has? its a P engine with an E303
that's the basic ball park # for a exsploder motor with a cam
Maybe if it had 30k on it and wasn't rusty and ugly-looking. But what JY is going to let an entire engine go for less than that? $400 would be the most I'd pay. I bought a whole GT40 head and intake setup, upper and lower, $250, and an entire Exploder engine for $300 last year, two separate occasions. Seems to me like the stuff has gone down in market value. I remember a rusty fresh-out-of-vehicle set of heads alone was $250-300 on CL/Ebay/forums. $250 and it was gone before you could say "I'll take it".
around here you can pick them up for $400 all day long
I'm still hoping I walk into the local U-Pull yard with some money in my pocket when they have a few 5.0 explorers again. The first time I went, I kid you not, there were 7 5.0 explorers. All still had heads and intakes on them. I only had enough money to buy what i had to have or I would have pulled all 7 sets of heads/intakes and only had $500 in around $2000 worth of parts...
I would agree on $400. That's what they go for in Michigan give or take.

500 is a bit steep, especially with the accessories that are useless to you guys. All you need is the hard parts, intakes, TB, and heads.
You'll have to reuse your Fox pan, accessories, distributor, and if you have the late '97 and newer 5.0, you'll need to get BBK1515 headers to work with the funky plug angle...OR you can use the stock Stang HO style headers.
As Clayton said, throw in an HO cam, and rock that monster.
Now, if you mod the Explorer TB to work with the Tbird's TB lever, port the heads a bit, an aftermarket cam, and some good exhaust, you'll be over the 300 mark and needing a new AOD pretty quick.
Fun, ain't it!? ;)
ive got 550$ in this now.......
early 96 up to only about 3 or so months did the explorers get any chance in hell of haveing P heads... just fyi... fomoco was back order on irons so the p heads got put on only a very few..... this is what i thought. 97's wouldnt get p heads.... only 96 exploder, mountineers or even some f100's from this time frame.
I purchased the whole engine, it resides on thier warehouse shelf fully complete minus only the starter, alternator and airconditioning., came from a rear ended exploder i believe,, can confirm,,
The yard runs each engine to verify operation prior to shelving and put up for sale.
price included cost of motor plus delivery to my garage 33 miles away.
so,, here is our current set up.
pls keep in mind that this build will help feed another build for my youngest son Chance when we put a decent engine together for my white coug.
Car is 88 bird sport, with what i believe has *got* to be e7 heads, stock bottom end, explorer uper and lower, BBK 65mm TB, 14LB injectors, stock computer.
option 1:
explorer motor delievers and i tear down and decide what machine work needs done.
have block punched and line bored if needed pending condition of interior parts i see.
it is likely i will have the shop punch out 30over bores.
do std size short block rebuild with possible 30over pistons
when mason gets home, we will remove his engine, swap on his existing explorer upper / lower / bbk TB he got for christmas
mason gets the explorer iron heads
remove his 14lb injectors for a set of 19lb set tom bryant sold me a long while back.
use the headers from my newly purched explorer motor
button things up and call it good.
option 2
add 331 stroker kit to bottom end with 30over pistons
do std size bearing kit if all is well.
mason now gets the explorer iron heads
swap over mason existing upper/lower intake he got for christmas and the bbk 65mm tb
*********need HO cam
*********need help on what size injectors,, explorer i think have 34lb but thats too much fuel i believe
*********need to udnerstand how to get a hold of a steel dizzy gear if i use an ho cam!! help!
end result
Chance gets a ready 5.0 block, with bottom end parts, Explorer upper , lower and tb, E7 heads, BBK headers i have on hand, gets him ahead of the game and my 550$ spent gets good use. I have a 5.0 wire harness lined up but i have to pay real well for it , have I hope at least two oil pans lined up....got a few pms to answer.
this is all going on in about 30days from now with mason taking a week vacation. (masons build that is)
You're backward on that, Scott - 96 and early 97 had non-P GT40 heads. mid 97-on had P heads.
