Title: Drums to discs
Post by: sum_weirdo on June 21, 2005, 05:23:56 PM
My 83 Tbird has front disc brakes and rear drums.  The whole system needs an overhaul so says the garage that changed off my winter tires.  They want to charge me $1000 for the job so as you might imagine I'm contemplating the job myself with maybe some help from a buddy.  I may not get to the rear brakes for months but I'm wondering what would be involved in getting rid of the drums altogether and converting to 4 wheel disc brakes.  Are the front components interchangable with the rear?

Take lots of K-Y jelly, cause if you pay the SOB's $1000, you're gettin a royal screwin'...

The only parts that interchange from front to rear are the lug nuts....

My thoughts exactly.

I suppose if they replace every component of the brake system, power booster, master cylinder, front disks, calipers, rear drums and cylinders, new brake lines, and new pads, all from a dealer plus labor, I guess that might be about right.  You could buy a kick'n' rear disk conversion kit from jegs or summit for like $650.00.
