Title: Guess what I get to do this holiday weekend.
Post by: TheFoeYouKnow on May 24, 2013, 08:25:09 AM
In the midst of educating a turbo cobalt driver on the virtue of a V8 RWD car, I suddenly got myself a foggy windshield.  .  It was pretty dramatic, I'm sure he thought a smoke bomb went off in my car.

It would have been pretty visible to him through my BACK WINDOW.

Sorry, J, I don't think so.  Besides, I just had this dash out to swap the HVAC, harness and cluster, and it's only a 2 hour job anyway.  I wish I had opened the plenum cover on the HVAC box when I had it out, I probably would have seen signs of leakage.  The part was only $25, and the time would have been next to nothing.

Make sure you put the restrictor back in the inlet hose.

I'm waiting for my Mark VII to blow it's original core. That should be fun.

Nah it's a Lincoln ;).

Just a bit of caution: the heater core for a electronic climate control car is slightly different than the one for a manual HVAC car. I think the ECC equipped Thunderbirds, Cougars, and Mark VIIs share a heater core. The standard Mustang one won't work, at least it didn't when I swapped the one on my Thunderbird. I had to get one for an electronic climate control car.

That's not a problem here, didn't even shop for mustang parts.  But the eatc and non eatc cores are the same on tbird cougar and mark vii.

Foe's right, no difference between EATC & Non-EATC. Although there is a difference between cars with A/C and Non-A/C cars.

Really? I orderd one from NAPA years ago and the non-EATC one was different than the EATC one. They even had different part numbers. The non-EATC one was listed as also fitting a Mustang. I did end up returning the NAPA core and getting a Motorcraft one from the dealer. This was about 8 years ago.

The difference between the A/C and Non-A/C heater cores is the way the tubes coming out are routed. The A/C one has the tubes towards one side and non-A/C one has them in the middle.

Just in case, I saved the good condenser and good evaporator from the other TBird before I sped it.  When the engine bay was empty, I replaced all the o-rings on all the springlock fittings, and I got new o-rings for the connections at the compressor, too.  Swapped out the black R-12  o-rings for green R-134a o-rings, drained the oil from the accumulator, condenser and compressor and replaced it with ester oil.  I didn't use PAG oil, because there could still be remnants of mineral oil that wouldn't play nice, but ester oil is compatible with R-134a and doesn't react with mineral oil.  I charged 2lbs 8, after holding 30 inches in the system for 4 hours.  With newer PAG oil systems you don't have to vacuum as long because the oil doesn't absorb water, Ester oil doesn't either for the most part, but you can never be sure you've removed all the mineral oil, so better safe than sorry.

My air is awesome, and not by accident.

So what was all the wining about a condenser change out some time back when converting to 134A. If memory serves me 86  posted some AC issues  and the post took off like a dozen LOOSE BALLOONS. Just saying!!!

By the way i have converted many a system and never installed PAG or ESTER lubricants. Or removed the R12 OIL. The old paraffin base lube that was installed with the R12 worked perfectly. Just a thought why would it NOT!!!

What I had was the o-rings, the ester oil, the time, the opportunity and the will to do the extra work.  Some guys swap the condenser, but I didn't. I could have, but I'm closing on a house and the extra money isn't there.  For now I'm satisfied with the performance of the system.  The wife's Fusion cools down faster but not much and they both discharge about the same temp.  I'm fabbing up a fan shroud next week for an electric fan I've been sitting on, that should help some with AC and 1 or 2 other things.
