Title: Subframe connectors
Post by: 2tbirds on March 24, 2013, 12:34:48 PM
Can you guys provide some pictures of your sub-frame connectors ?

I can't decide on what route to take with mine.
I plan on going extreme with these things so I want some ideas.
At this point I'm thinking of buying the Global West pieces and adding additional support at the front and rear.  Pics installed please.

Maybe I'm wrong but  I noticed a member by the name "Aerocoupe" seems to have roll bar tubing subframe connectors that tie into the trunk frame. I like that idea.

I made some based off of the global west connectors. I think for a street car these will do fine. If you are building an all out drag car or you want the stiffest chassis possible you may want to look at the thru the floor connectors.

I've just got 1"x2" square wall tubing as subframe connectors. It made the car noticeably more solid over bumps. It also corners much better as well.

thunderjet302,
Can we see the rear section ?
I'm curious if you welded on the angle part of the torque box/jack plate area or directly on top of it.
One of the main reasons I'm interested in subframe connectors is the fact my car spends so much time on a lift (lol).

Take a really good look through Jerrys (Daminic) thread "project evolution" he want all out. Jacking bars, seat braces, sfc's the whole nine yards

I want to brace the front frame rail some how.
Here is a pic from Project Evolution thread that shows my area of interest.
Another idea for the rear is to make a horizontal brace.  From torque box to  torque box.

Here is the car on the outer 1" tubing.
The gaps around the door didn't change

Awesome design Daminc. How often do you get to see a Unibody car jacked up from the side like that so easily, lol.

You fab that yourself?

Yes, I made just about everything that went into my car, including the new front frame sections

Soul,
That pic is hot too.  Is that your car ?
How does one get thick tubing bent like that Rack & Pinion Cross Member ?
Or is this a pre-formed piece ?

If you jack it up just right I had 3 wheels up on mine.

daminc,
Can you provide specifics about your tubing ?
I'll probably be ordering my material off the internet  so I need to know a few more details.
I know you said the jack rails/matix are one inch but they don't look exactly square.    Next, what gauge or thickness ?
Also, how did you mock up the rear section ? Did you use card board as a template ?
My 87 Tbird frame is different than your cougars.  I don't know how I can use a straight piece of tubing since my rear section is off set to the inside.
Last, this goes to everyone.  Please show a pic of the rear section of the brace.  Thats the most complex area.

THANKS TO ALL OF YOU FOR YOUR REPLIES !

The subframes should be identicle. Part of damiacs rear quarter panel and rocker is from a 87 t-bird...

I don't know about that.
He only used the outer skins on the rear I think.
If what you say is true where are the rear sections welded ?
Here is a pic of my 87 Turbo Coupe rear section.  Tell me how I'm supposed to get a straight piece of square tube to line up perfect.

here is where my frame ended up. correct, it is not in direct line with the front frame
(http://i233.photobucket.com/albums/ee79/daminc/Cougar%20Pass%20side%20rebuild/frame%20rails%20and%20connectors/IMG_4082.jpg)

its something like  1-1/2'' off from front to back.

if you want them to connect without hanging down to low, you going to have to cut your floor to get to at least the bottom of the rear frame section.

I cut the bottom of the front frame and slipped my 2x2  inside of it. its welded all along the bottom, all along the top inside the old frame, and all along the floor. I have chucks seat braces also welded into the 2x2
(http://i233.photobucket.com/albums/ee79/daminc/Cougar%20Pass%20side%20rebuild/frame%20rails%20and%20connectors/IMG_4079.jpg)

I fabbed some plates to attach the 2x2 to the rear section of frame. Its an L. I cant find the actual picture of what I used, but here was a small piece as an example of what I did, and how much it off from the front.. I dont know if I have a pic of the other side of the 2x2, and the plate on there
(http://i233.photobucket.com/albums/ee79/daminc/Cougar%20Pass%20side%20rebuild/frame%20rails%20and%20connectors/IMG_4003.jpg)

here is the 2x2 cut into the floor
(http://i233.photobucket.com/albums/ee79/daminc/Cougar%20Pass%20side%20rebuild/frame%20rails%20and%20connectors/IMG_3938.jpg)

here you see the front is notched, and theres a plate on the rear. this took a lot of engineering, and a lot of angles, seeing that the outer jacking rail is higher then the 2x2
(http://i233.photobucket.com/albums/ee79/daminc/frame%20rails%20and%20connectors/IMG_3556.jpg)

good luck

Daminc, thanks for posting those schematics. I think I'm gonna fab up a slight variation of your design for my bird. Willing to bet those will beat the hell outta the Extreme Matrix Brace System by kenny brown, and for not even a quarter of the price!

(going back to the mustang posted earlier) I have never understood why a person wouldn't go ahead and run their rails all the way back and tie them into the rear subframe instead of just butting them up against the cut off factory front subframe, and then add in SFC's between the two... running the rails all the way back and completely eliminating the factory front subframe would be sooo much cleaner

I agree.... If your going that far...make a real frame for it... I'm planning on trying to do that to my vert

i'm seriously considering doing it on my current t-bird. I'm thinking 2x3 through the floor "SFC" that extends all the way to the front of the car, of course with a step up to drop it since we ain't building monster mobiles here lol
