Title: Repairing the faded chrome on the side moldings
Post by: QUICKSHIFT on March 14, 2013, 08:37:55 PM
After a few years of watching my chrome accent on my body side moldings go skunky,  I decided to try a repair to cover it up using 3M professional trim tape I had left over from the custom enclosed race trailer I built for our quads. Below is a few pics I took along the way. It may not be very explicit but you can get my drift on what I'm doing.....enjoy. :D

Very cool, thanks for sharing.

Perhaps they have chrome trim tape?

Several years ago someone was selling OEM style bumper trim. Not real cheap, I think somewhere around $60-$70.  I bought one piece and it worked very nice but haven't seen it advertised since?

Maybe they were just cleaning out stock but it sure wasn't give away prices.

I'd like to run some chrome tape around mine but I keep thinking it will look like ass if it's not perfectly smooth. Colored tape hides and flaws better.

Looks great. Much better than pitted chrome trim :).

Did you clean the surface first? Scotch-Brite pad? Degreaser? Rubbing alcohol? Run a tack cloth?

Those things will determine whether the new tape sticks for a long period of time. I trust 3M products implicitly, but you still need to have a clean surface first.

That being said, it looks very nice, you did a great job. :)

As was said above, I hope that you did your prep work correctly before installing the tape, or it won't stick for anywhere near as long as it should.

Looks great though!

I used lacquer thinners VERY VERY carefully after 120 grit emery cloth......so far so good.

Thanks for the compliments.
