A nybody have their hoods pinned on? I've been back and fourth on this for a little while now, but my issue is I don't know exactly where/how I should place them. Hairpin or torsion pin style my hood release cable broke ages ago and I had a fix for that at the time but that was before I went with the TC front clip on my car.
Anybody have any pictures or imput on this? And if you do have pictures, post them up anyway just to give me an idear of what I'm shooting for. Core support, hood all that jazz
Thanks!
With hood pins, you'll have no way to lock your hood if you say your cable is broken. I have pins on my Comet but it is NEVER out of my sight when I take it out.
I thought about it on my Cougar....stuck with factory release cable.
I agree, factory cable. Just find a good used one, swap it on. Hood pins, in my own opinion, on these cars, looks WAY out of place.
But if you have to, use some that are better than those cheap flat chrome ones from the parts store. These are cheap, but not bad looking......

Another point to consider. Wash and chamois car with a scoop and pinned hood and see if you still like the pins. BTDT.
I like the smooth look on the hood. I had thought long and hard about pins for the Sport, and had to back down. They just don't fit......figuratively speaking.
My old Torino convertible had the stock hood locks, which were factory items for 1970, and they were flush on the hood. I thought they are the best looking hood locks ever made. Maybe could adapt to a Thunderbird?
Here are a few pics....

I love those hood pins...but they offer no locking support.
I'm using these on the convertible:

Solves all problems really. I'm very happy with them.
Eric, the Torino hood locks are positive locking in addition the regular hood latch. The supports are attached to the frame of the car.....i think i have a pic that shows them.....

No, not that...I meant, for security.
The ones I linked to have a key lock.
i had hood pins on mine before i switched to cowl induction heres what it lookd like
Thanks for the imput fellas. I'm gonna get some pins for the car just because it adds that little bit of classic hotrod touch to my car. And that's exactly what I'm going for. Ducktail spoiler, short boss scoop, glossy body color, matte secondary color and accent pieces. And if your worried about losing your goodies under the hood or any jazz like that the little 1/8 locks the tiny padlocks work fine. But my baby will be in my sight 99% of the time or in a locked garage.
Just want to give my bird a little vintage and a classic touch.
Then go with the billet hood pins. They have some substance to them, and don't look like those $10 py thin ones.
I had planned on it. But I wanted to see the placement of them. Just to get a rough estimate but its ok ill just wing it.
They come in black as well.....
This is the placement on the core support on my car:

And placement on the hood:

I put them right where the factory bumper stops are. Seemed to be logical and worked out well.
Hope that helps.
Alright! Just what I needed to see. I was thinking that would be the best route just wasnt sure. Thanks for the input Eric.
And Vinnie, I was thinking matte black scuff plates with chrome pins. Methinks it will look mighty snazzy with the lava red and the rest of the matte black accents.
Thanks you guys
I don't think there is any reason you can't run the factory latch for the security, and the hood pins for the looks. Just remember to pull the locks in the pins before releasing the factory latch.
I'm running the factory secondary catch (hook) with the locking hood pins.
The way my hood was manufactured, there was a metal reinforcement for the factory hood latch imbedded in the fiberglass.
But I just didn't trust it. Eventually it would have disintegrated the fiberglass around the reinforcement.
Once you move from a stock metal hood, nothing is the same again. You sort of have to find your own way to keep the hood down and secured.
I would never recommend tring to run a factory hood latch with a fiberglass hood. That's asking for trouble. ;)
Considering my battery cutoff switch is under the hood pull 2 pins flip the switch check the oil drop and go. Im going for functionality and looks
What about the pop up kind of locks?

Way to complicated looking. The simple pin works fine
They just press and lock. But, I understand you gotta do it the way you vision it. That's what makes building our own cars our own way so much fun........if you can call it fun at times. LOL.
Its a royal pita most of the time but after the hard stuff is done it gets to be real fun. Swapping engines is fun to me. Wiring and sorting out issues is not. I started with a bare canvas and just been adding paint here and there kinda like a puzzle a piece here and a piece there
my factory lock still works, so the basic hood pins work as extra security at speed on mine. I'm with Eric as to the location. I just removed the hood bumpers and installed the pins there. Works good, I just have to remember to pull them before I pop the release, otherwise it isn't going anywhere.
