Title: mystery bracket on engine
Post by: jcassity on December 30, 2012, 11:14:16 PM
found this bracket along the rear of the motor, it was attached to the rear driver lower intake stud to the upper intake rear pass stud.

never seen it before, was on my son's bird, I did not have one installed on my 20th.

thoughts?

cant remember seeing it before, it did not have a fomoco id on it either like i would expect to find.

I remember that bracket LOL.

I had guessed that maybe Ford engineers were playing it safe with the new SEFI and wanted to put a safeguard on there, in case somehow the upper intake built up pressure and "blew off" the lower intake. But there's the front and back freeze plugs in the upper intake for that.

Then I thought, maybe it was a way to stabilize the intakes for NVH. But there's zero different with the bracket on or off.

So my next line of thought was, they wanted to throw something in that looked important to purposely keep owners from tinkering around with the intakes.
And that's the one I'm going with. ;)

My Guess is that this was some kind of "handle" to be used during assembly, giving the assembly line worker something to hold on to, other than the fairly fragile upper intake manifold.

Noise Vibration Harshness. I've guessed those brackets are to support the upper intake. You see them on a lot of cars with large plenums, including inline 4's. The 3.5 V6 in my 300 has three of 'em: two on the driver's side and one on the passenger side

It keeps the upper from cracking From Vibration harmonics. We have plenty of them in the dumpster also.

Another thought: perhaps it's there to hold the upper while assembly line workers bolted the upper to the lower intake.
