Title: Junk yard score
Post by: thunderjet302 on December 30, 2012, 05:42:42 PM
So I made a trip to the local Pick-and-Pull as I checked online and found out they have an 89 and 92 Mark VII in the yard. I needed some stuff for the Mark, such as a LSC center cap, a turn signal lens, a speaker grill, and a dimer switch, all of which I found on the 92 Mark. I popped the hood on it just for fun and found that it had a very clear radiator overflow bottle so I grabbed that for the Thunderbird (the 86-88 T-bird/Cougar and 86-92 Mark VII use the same overflow bottle). I looked around the engine bay and noticed that the throttle body looked a bit different. I took a closer look and noticed that it had a aftermarket throttle body. It had a 70mm Edelbrock Throttle body with a stock EGR spacer (yeah I know WTF :hick:?). I pulled it off an bought it with the rest of my parts. The yard only charged me $20 for the Throttle Body. I was looking for one to replace the 65mm TB on my Thunderbird for a bit more airflow. Now I just need to pick up a 70mm EGR spacer and I'll be good to go :D.
This is what I ended up getting for $20: http://www.summitracing.com/parts/edl-3825/overview/make/ford
Pretty good eh?

Once in awhile I find good stuff. It seems like by the time most Fox Cougars/Thunderbirds/Mark VIIs get to the yard they are beat to hell, with not much worth salvaging. I actually found some good stuff yesterday. It's been a few years since I found something cool.

Nice score thunderjet302! Always nice to find something you weren't expecting.
That's cool 1BadBird. My wife tagged along the last time I went to the salvage yard. It was convenient to have an extra set of hands. I am getting anxious to go to the yard again. I am like a kid in a candy store searching through the rows of Fords. :D

My ole lady has been with me a few times...she was the one that made me get the hood, wheels, and front lights from a TC a coupla years ago. Next day we went back and she helped me get the rear from it.

Wow, nice score. I have not been to the yards around here for a few years but last time the fox bodies were pretty much picked over. They crushed a bunch of them too back when s prices were extremely high.

My son has gone to the yard with me numerous times. It gave us some good quality time together. He is married with two kids now and couldn't go the last time I went so the wife said she would go along.

There were two 87 Cougars in the yard two months ago, one a 3.8 and the other a 5.0. They were both really beat up with pretty much nothing worth taking. When I checked online and found that the local pick and pull (where the Cougars were) had an 89 and 92 Mark VII I went staright over to find some extra parts for my Mark VII. I was suprised to find parts I could use. Mind you the interior of the 92 was trashed, which is where I could have used spare parts from (the 84-89 and 90-92 Mark VIIs have different dash boards). The 89 had a fine dash, but I couldn't use any parts from it. Figures :hick:. The 89 was where I found the 70mm Edelbrock throttle body. The car was actually in really good shape, except that something had hammered it in the rear end. That's the only reason it was there.

Lou, Brandi and I went to the LKQ P-N-P on W. North Ave. They didn't have squat. Where'd you go?

I'd like to have the header panel if you'd consider shipping it, and it wasn't an arm and a leg to get it out of that yard....I want to convert my '88 to a 4 eyed front.

The whole fiberglass header panel, and the headlight buckets, but if it's very expensive, don't bother..I'd only have about 120 bucks to pay with lol

Is it the same on all 4 eye birds ? I might be able to go to another yard
So you just need the rear fiberglass and the buckets right ?
Ill look into it man

I've been known to pick up relays, big fuses, and some bulbs. Anymore I don't nab bulbs, unless I can stash 'em in with my tools. Having one smashed in my pants and the resulting chunk of glass stuck in my leg, like some newfangled crazy-ass piercing didn't really become quite the fad I'd hoped. Of course, me hopping around, screaming bloody murder from a gash in my leg the size of the Challenger Deep did attract a crowd multi-national onlookers who all pissed themselves laughing...thankfully i didn't die from lack of blood, but as the doctor was later putting a stitch into it commented..." and a bandaid wasn't good enough?"
Oh, the humility! OK, so maybe it wasn't that bad...but it's not such a great idea to have fragile, sharp-edged-when-broken things in your pockets and then smash those things with heavy car parts. Thankfully the cut was minor, if a bit of a bloody mess. (I bleed easily).
Last time I went, I took a small tub that cream cheese is sold in at the store and used that for collecting bulbs and the like. Fits neatly in the bottom of tool bag, and keeps glass outta my arse!

This is why I don't put short pointy things/glass items in my pocket at the yard :hick:. I just buy new lamps at the store, that way I know they "should" work :D.

I also take a 12volt battery from a house alarm system to the yard with me to test electrical parts. It's small enough to fit in my tool bag and its not stupid heavy. Try it if you have one lying around.
