does the 1986 cougar ls have a 7.5 2.73 gear in the end? just wondering so i can get this off my mind looking to get some 3.75 or 4.10 on an AOD.
thank you for your time
I believe it does.....my 84 did. What are you plans for the car? The reason I ask is, it may be just as cheap to put a 8.8 in with 3.73s....they're easy to find.
I spend a lot of time on the freeway, and in that scenario, I wish I had gone with 3.55 or 3.27. Around town, however, I have full love for my 3.73. When I go 5-Lug, it's going to be a late 8.8 w/3.55 and disc brakes.
If you've got the AOD, I'd recommend the 3.73 ratio, with a good convertor, it'll get a porky car off to a quicker jump...with a T5 though, I'd go no more than 3.55, otherwise first gear gets useless fast, unless you have a big tire out back.
But don't take my word for it, just everyone who has modded their cars seems to agree the AOD cars like a little more rear gear.
Also, what gear will MOST of your driving be in? Keep in mind, you'll also need to change your speedo driven gear (in the trans, easy to do) to keep your speedo accurate...
Just for the record the AUTO TC came with 3.73 from the factory. Just saying. Heavy car low torque engine bigger final drive. The difference between 3.5 & 3.7 is miniscule. I normally recommend 3.73. Just me could be wrong
A4 LD.
I like my 3.55's a lot. I also have a 3.73 rear in the garage collecting dust.
Personaly I love my 4.10s (srarted with 3.73s)even with the useless 3.27 first gear. This car is built for fun and some hiway driving. Gear is cheap HP and if you do the math, 4.10x.68 = roughly a 2.73s.
Like was mentioned earlier, to each their own. I don't plan on putting on more than 3000 miles a year, even at 24+mpg.
While that is true of the '87-'88 4-speed automatic TurboCoupes, the '84-'86 TurboCoupes & XR-7's with the 3-speed automatic had a 3.45 axle gear.
I run 4.30s in the drag car my TC I think has gears still haven't looked
Just wondering has any one done a right up on track lock rebuilds on this forum
I do gears and rebuilds I would love to do a small how to on trac lock rebuilds I always add extra clutches
if there was a how to done, it would be a sticky, i think i saw it a few years ago on the old message board we were on but it never got captured.
it may be in the archives under Master Blaster archive records ,, whereever that is,, cant recall now.
I've got 3.73 gears in my T-bird. With the stock converter it turned about 2400rpm on the highway. With the non-lock-up PI Stallion converter I have now it turns about 2800-2900 rpm at 70 mph. It's a bit louder/uses more gas but it's a hell of a lot more fun. There's nothing like nailing the throttle at 70 mph and having the car rear up, snort, throw you back in the seat, and shoot ahead like it was kicked in the ass:D.
I might do a small right up I'm doing one this weekend
Gears FTW
We have used Track Locks with very bad results. That is if you are talking the ratchet type.
These SUCK BIG TIME

I rebuild stock clutch units
Mild to wild lol
The Cobra carbon fiber clutch discs M-4700-C work well and are a cheap upgrade.
I just did my buddy's I added 2 new clutches and used 2 old for a total of 4 not the stock 3
I was going to do a right up but the coors set in
Ill be doing the one in the TC soon ill take pics then lol
