There was a slow person ticking me off. I stomped on it to pass him, right when I got a good roar of first gear at high RPM, my water pump pulley let go and my fan slammed around under the hood chopping my upper radiator hose off, and chopping holes in the radiator. BANG BANG BANG! I thought I threw a rod. Especially when I pulled over and saw antifreeze pouring out. How embarrassing, lol. This was in my old 83 5.0 cougar.

i was re-installing my sun visors, and a screw went through the harness above the headliner wiping out a LOT of my car's interior harness, tail light harness, sequential tail light kit, and burned a hole in my fuse panel the size of a golf ball. I HATE electrical stuff.

I was replacing my battery terminals not too long ago, and after I replaced them, my car wouldn't start. The fuel pump wasn't priming, and I was going insane trying to figure out why. Then it hit me like a ton of bricks, I forgot to put the EEC ground back onto the negative terminal. I learn best by mistakes :D

Did ya all know the bracket for the ac compressor needs be bolted all the way down? I started the car up on the way to school and I heard a thud. Then it got hard to steer and yeh.

That and if a clutch cable gets hot, it melts, when it melts it gets harder to push the pedal. When it gets harder to push the pedal things break. That was my first and last plastic quadrant.

CoogarXr, that reminds me of a similar experience I had:

Years ago, when driving my '80 Formula Firebird (this would have been 1990 or so) I was driving like the 18 year old ass hole that I was, and had just finished passing a bunch of people at lord knows what speed (the speedo maxed out at 85) when the windshield turned green and a whole bunch of steam started pouring out from under the hood. I pulled over with steam everywhere and was then passed by all the people I'd just passed. Turned out I'd blown the right side tank off the radiator. My father and I soldered it back on, right there on the side of the road, with a propane torch, a can of plumber's flux, and a roll of plumber's solder. We got it back on, but it leaked forever after...

'Nother story:

My first Bird, a 1985 V6 model, was carbureted, as most Canadian ones were. Carbureted V6 Birds had an anti-backfire valve in the smog pump setup designed to prevent the system from pumping air into the system during throttle-lift situations. This is because when you lift off the throttle on a carbureted car they briefly go pig rich as the vacuum spikes. That pig rich mixture doesn't burn well because there's little air in the cylinder, so lots of raw fuel gets dumped into the exhaust. If the smog pump were to continue pumping air into the exhaust at this point it would cause that unburned fuel to ignite and cause a backfire, hence the valve. Which failed on my car on the very day I was trading it in on my next Bird. I was driving it to the dealership and was coming down a steep hill off the highway into the city. I let off the gas and heard what sounded like a gun shot, only louder, and accompanied by a loud flash under the car. Scared the bejeesus out of me, and apparently out of the driver of the car in the lane next to me, who promptly    almost went into the ditch. The car got extremely loud and I heard clunking and banging under the car as if I'd run over something. A look in the rearview mirror showed my exhaust system lying in the road. I literally blew the ler right off the car...

A weird one with my '88: It was sitting on the floor in my garage, and I was working on something on the bench, when I heard a loud "SPANG!" sound coming from the car. I looked around to see where the noise came from, and discovered the most unusual thing: One of the front coil springs had broken (the only reason I even looked at the springs was that the noise sounded "springy"). It broke not at the bottom, where they always break in these cars, but at the top. While the car was just sitting there. Where it had been sitting for a few months. Why it decided to break right then is beyond me. Actually took a picture of that:

Blew a tire doing who knows what speed. I had the speedo mazed at 85 (I was 16 at the time), didn't notice a thing until cars were passing me. Pused the gas pedal and it shot from 70mph instantly to 85. I figure I blew out the rear end, looked in my rear veiw to see chunks of rubber flying around verywhere. I have 4 people in the car, and none of them heard a sound. Car didn't even hadle funny until I hit the brakes.

The wors part was the drive home. I had only the mini spare, and that's impossible to drive on the rear of a car like that. I was sitting stopped at lights, the engine would rev up and down (bad tps), and with my foot to the floor on the break pedal, it would chirp the tire on the rev up in gear. Just letting off the brakes it would squeel away non stopped. Couldn'even get the car to move without the speedo being about 40mph. Must have been the funniest thing in the world to watch. Surprised I didn't get pulled over on that one.now I cars a jack stand and at least a cheapie 2 ton jack, along with the stock on just in case I ever have to swap a tire from front to back, for the same reason.

One of my amps caught fire in the trunk while I was driving down the road.

Found out I had a leaky gas tank when I ran out of gas in the Fort McHenry Tunnel. (Sending unit was inop at the time)

250 miles away from home I miss a shift, the car backfires and breaks the distributor gear.

Granaded my differential at the most embarrasing place. On the line at the track.

While helping a friend drop a new engine in his car, he uses my car to go get lunch. Rolls back in the driveway in a cloud of smoke, turbo came apart and the engine ate it.

Reinstalling my steering column after doing the heater core in my 88 tbird,  while bolting the column into place I pinched the ground wire of the alarm kill switch relay.  So I put the whole dash together, go to start the car... and she's dead LOL.. I was like WTF.. Than while retracing my steps I noticed the pinched wire under the steering wheel like 30min later lol

I once found out about a fuel leak with an inop sending unit too.  Of course after I just filled the 22gal tank, I was driving out to see my dad (45 miles away), after driving 10 miles the car sputtered and died.  Turns out the 3" section of rubber fuel line to the carb blew a hole in it and puked all the gas on the engine, it was raining out so I never noticed any smoke.  I cut a section long enough from the 10" or so rubber line from the tank to the metal hardline and replaced it on the side of the road.  Then had to wait for my dad to bring gas..

Finished gassing up car after long hibernation and tune up. Was driving around all day, pulled into an Arby's to get some food come out and is dead as a door nail. Battery decided at 8 years to strand me, had been charging and starting fine all day. Just seemed odd they drove it all day and had been fine to just die then.

I remember that episode.  What a time finding that one.

I have a "stupid me" kinda story.  17 years old, done changing the oil in the 85 Cougar.  Easing it off the ramps in my dads shop.  For some reason I thought I could put my foot in with the door open of the car and just "ease" it off the  ramps.  My footing kinda slipped and it shot backwards and caught the car door against the building door opening and bent my car door forward, before I could get the car stopped.  , it all happened so fast..... and it was all over, and I stood there wondering what the hell I had just done and what was I thinking. LOL

I felt like a total ass.

1st.  I went out with a girlfriend one night about 60 miles from home and apparently my alternator was not charging and battery went dead.  Did not find out until after we go and try to start car to come home around midnight.  Parents had to bring me a battery from my moms T-bird, I was in a 79 mustang.

2nd.  I stop to get gas and after filling up I go to start the car and starter solenoid sticks and car keeps trying to turn over.  I go to pop hood to tap on solenoid and the hood release cable brakes.  The lady inside said not to use any tools to get hood open, I said ok, when the car catches fire and blows the pumps, don't blame me, she just about hit me with the tool bag they had.  Pull the cable and open hood, tap the solenoid and it stopped.

Had this happen too, with the py jack that came with the car.  of course it didn't give out until I had the flat tire off the car, left a nice dent in the asphalt

Not in the Tbird(s), but in the vert Stang I have been tinkering on...put a new fuel pump in last week. Ran for a bit, died, wouldn't start gain. No pressure, no pump noise. Dropped the tank, and the bottom hose clamp had turned and was touching both the red wire's connector AND the bracket. D'oh.

Fixed that...and then again a bit later, it died and wouldn't start.

Got pissed off, said "hell with you" and pushed it back in the shed. This morning, I dropped the tank...AGAIN, and found that the ground wire had worked it's way loose, and had bent the spade connector. I re-routed the wires, and slapped on a brand new 190 lb pump, buttoned it all back together, she purrs like a kitten. Or maybe it runs like a horse...but yeah, that's my latest crazy Fox fawkaroo.

The Sport has just kicked my ass every chance I had to work on it. Partly my fault, and somewhat cirspoogestance.

One time a friend and I were sitting in a junk yard mustang, pulling the interior. We were working on the dash. My friend was drinking a can of Mt. Dew. We were about to pull the dash, so he reaches out and sets the can on the roof. We pull the dash and sit back inside. He reaches up, grabs the can and takes a swig. He screamed YEEEOW! and spit out a bee that had stung him inside the mouth. Never let your pop can out of your sight, especially at a junk yard!

very once in a while when i would go near WOT in my TC it would stay revved up to 3000 rpm. sometimes it would stay like that for 15mins. i would keep driving and only let it out of gear if at a traffic light. as soon as i would shut the car off it wouldn't restart. sometimes after 15mins it would restart one time took all night.
i thought i had pip/tfi issues.
one night i let a friend take it out around 1am to get battery for a xbox controller so we all could play. as he is out im telling Nate about the high idle and no restart issue. sure enough i hear the car revved up when he pulls up. wouldn't restart at all. next morning still nothing.
as being a TC'r for along time i keep a spare dizzy in the car. at his house i swap the dist. still nothing. finally it started. this went on for months.
One day it dawned on my TPS was going to 5volts. so eec command full IAC open. the no start was the TPS sending 5volts to ecc at start and command flood out mode. once i figured it out i let it go another few months. let my other friend take it for a few days while his truck was in the shop. it did it to him 3 times. he got pissed off and replaced the TPS for me in return for using the car.

floored the 5.0 SO motor in my 88 XR-7 with my girlfriend in the car and started seeing white smoke and smelled antifreeze.  Pulled over and saw the two heater core hoses were torn and completely ripped off the firewall connection of the heater core due to a bad motor mount.  Had to "put put" it back home.

This is why i use silicone heater hose. If you get engine torque over you dont trash the core of break the nipples off.

Years ago i had a customer with a parasitic current draw. The car would not start if it sat for a couple of days. I checked that car out from soup to nuts. Let it sit for a week and it worked perfectly. Then it happened again. The battery was dead in the guys driveway. Once again i checked it and no draw down??? So i told the customer not to jump the car when it dies and i would come to the car. Well i found the trouble. The guy had a steep driveway and he parked it their in stead of pulling it in the garage. Well i opened up the trunk and the trunk light was on. This was because of the angle. I installed a manual switgh in stead of the mercuy switch and all was well in the world!!!

just re-glued on the headliner in my 84 4eye,  storm was on the way but at the time, i didnt see how a storm was a problem since i was in the car and out of the rain, besides, i was settled in the back seat with all my tools and stuff just pokin along.
wife yelled out that if i wanted to eat warm instead of cold supper, i better come in.  (actually  she was worried and had a feeling about the below).

while i was eating my grilled cheese's, it happened.  now at my age then and today, i can button down a couple grilled cheese in a couple minutes.
It felt like i had just walked in the door when this happend.

Insurance totaled it for a payout of 1300.00.  sold the motor / trans for 500, sold the rest of the car for 800, some shop stopped by because someone needed a whole front end and this was a perfect match down to the color/year/lights.  i then purchased the white coug in my sig for an additional 600$.
I actually test drove this car (minus the tree) for a guy who asked me if it ran,, i said yeah, sure,, so i hopped in through the folded driver door sitting kind sideways with my whole body on top of the roof while reaching down kinda between my knees to steer, feet barely made it to the gas and brakes but the car ran fine.  Got the cops called on me for driving it and they all actually ended up wanted to see me do it.  Figuring it was a setup knowing those va beach cops at the time, i wasnt gonna show em, just told them it was true, wont happen again and im sorry.

this was in 93 down in va beach.

same for stupid tv shows now, since im still sporting a Tube tv, i dont get the full screen i paid for anymore.  same happens with this stupid iphone.

that picture above does not look like the picture that is on my computer.

LOL,, dude,

your looking at a 2.5L gm mod and you would have never known.
theres lots of stuff in that bugg that made it quick.
but wait, it gets better............
he fabricated a larger speedo cable from the front driver wheel up to a gear box and a blower that sat up front.  he used the internal heating plumbing to get air pushed back to the motor.
Ive never seen another like it,, this guy could make anything out of anything.. on reason for his divorce i guess.  His mind was too busy with cars and less on watching out for his primary duties...something i can say ive been guilty of more than once.

I didnt really get along so to speak with him all that well because everything i did was  to him, but i put up with it and learned a few things.  I ended up figuring out why i didnt look forward to him walking over to my lot with "that look" on his face when i was working on stuff.  His favorite introduction (with busch beer in hand) was  ,,, "hey squid, whatcha shagin up today?",,,,, looking back on it, its funny cause most of the  time he was right!!!!!!!!
well.. was.... this was 20years ago.
