Title: water leak in cab!!!
Post by: SR71blackbird on November 27, 2012, 02:01:53 PM
SO I havent driven my car in awhile. I cleaned and vacuumed out the inside the other day and found out that my floor was really wet on the drivers side kinda by my pedals! where could the leak be coming from? I vacuumed up everything by the air cals infront of the window and that didnt do it.

Does it smell like antifreeze, or just straight water? I wonder if fluid could go from the heater core through the duct. Otheriwse, maybe a leaky seal between the steering shaft and firewall (or other grommet there) or windshield leak.

My guess would be windshield.  My 88's windshield actually came un-stuck from its frame, something I didn't notice until I took the windshield trim off to paint the car. With the trim off you could push the left hand side of the glass 1/2 inch away from the body. Yes, the glass was actually bending. I ended up having the windshield replaced, since it was starting to delaminate in the corners anyway...

Maybe the sheet metal has a hole under the cowl or the windshield could be leaking at the bottom.

run water on the drivers side of the car with a garden hose and look for where the water is coming in at with a shop light under the dash

Bet it is the HOOD RELEASE CABLE where it goes through the fire wall. Unless the windshield separated. Look at the grommet that is the most likely spot. Fixed several that leaked where you are talking about.

Moon or sunroof?
If so....the corner hoses are plugged, if no window in the roof, then the aforementioned places must be leaking.

I thought the roof drains were in the rear of the coupe by the FLAG panels. Not 100% on this though. Good point though!!

That's got to be it.  I had a difficult-to-find leak on my 88 that was exactly there.  It had annoyed the PO who added a bunch of goop to the windshield to try to "seal" the leak there, but to no avial.  The drain for the windshield behind the DS fender is DIRECTLY above this grommet.  I pulled the fender out a bit and put some rubber (from an innertube) and rubberized adhesive above this grommet as an eave to force the water away from this point.  I'd try that first.

Found it! the black metal thing at the bottom of the window is very loose. On the driver side there is a huge gap between the window and that black piece of metal. How can i fix it? I live in the NW and its been raining ALOT here.

Take a photo. I am thinking i know what you mean and that might not be the issue. If memory serves me the window has an over hang and that plate is not to keep water out. Just saying.

I'll take a pic of it tomorrow. Along the rest of the window that black piece of metal is up close.

BORNINAFORD

That is exactly where they leak. Especially on the drivers side. Personally i have fixed many. The way i fix the issue is i use that hole for the battery cable when relocating the BATTERY in the trunk. Other than that a new grommet and some body shots and it is fixed!!

I know this is an old thread but was looking for an answer to my water leak. It's not coming from the grommet for the hood release cable and so far I have not found leak around the windshield. It isn't loose anywhere that I can find. You can see in this vid that the water is dripping from above the grommet. Anybody have any ideals?

That looks like a windshield seal. Try and localize it with the HOSE.

That's what I thought as well but dang if I can find it. That's what I have been doing. I got in the car and had the wife spray it with the hose to see where it was dripping from.

Well,it's not the windshield or the grommet. Sealed all around that side and didn't slow the leak down at all. By sealed I used the same rubber seal as the windshield ribbon and did that whole corner. It's below the windshield but it's not the grommet either as you can see it in the vid.It leaks even when you spray below the windshield and never get the windshield wet so I guess I will be removing the front fender or inner wheel well to inspect further...  Glad I let this thing sit in the rain before I put the carpet back in...lol

I pulled my carpet out because of water stains and mildew smell. Once the carpet was up I saw a few surface rust spots. Practically the same locations. The pedal, on passenger side by kick board and two spots halfway down both door sills. I was going to check the firewall and grommets as well as the hose method. I thought it was from the windows being left down in the rain by the PO.

Well I finally got a chance to check deeper on my water leak. It's NOT the windshield or the hood release cable grommet. The only place that I coulf find that may be causing it is this seam on the cowl. Most of the seam sealer was missing. This car is rust free so there are no other holes and all the grommets are in good condition.

That seam above was the source of my leak. All cleaned, sealed, painted and fender reinstalled. No leak no more! Lol
