Title: Messed up cougar wheel!
Post by: ipsd on June 13, 2005, 10:05:49 PM
This is a pic of the driver side front wheel from the 88 cougar that I totaled. You can see how one part is trying to be square. I really think that it looks pretty good for the pounding that it took. I drove off a 75ft embankment while I was sleeping with the cruise set at 65MPH. Any how this is on my wall of destruction. That was over 2yrs ago. Both my buddy and I walked away. I did break my back but now its all good.

Meh. I've done worse (to a wheel, anyway). At least that wheel is still all there (bent, but all there). When I bounced my '88 LS off a tractor trailer at 70MPH my left rear wheel literally disintegrated:

Note how the bead lip is pretty much missing except for a small portion. The lug nuts on the tractor trailer literally blasted the rim away. The rims, BTW, were originally from a '70 Datsun 240ZX. Fronts were 15X5, rears were 15X8. I had a machine shop redrill them to fit the fox bolt pattern and make up some spacers so they rode on the center hub properly.

The car itself actually held together pretty well, considering a tractor trailer was involved - the passenger compartment was untouched, and the hood didn't even get bent. The hood and the right door were actually the only body parts on the car that didn't get bent:

Note the exhaust pipe, bent at 90 degrees to the car:

And the unbent hood - everything under it was smushed, but the hood was OK:

It was a shame, too - this was an 80,000 mile, mint charcoal on grey 5.0 LS with an odd option combination: Sunroof, power windows, A/C, cruise, but no power locks.

MMM, when the old ´84 was totaled, was in very similar circunstances like Thunder Chicken´s crash. My dad was driving at 50 Mph and a f#"$% nissan tries to pass a truck. My dad was driving at the opposite lane, and that car broke the rear wheel of the driver side and rear ended
The wheel litteraly disintegrates...... Since that, i am thinking on a "weak point" of the Fox-Cougar-Bird....but maybe was the fault of the great offset rims.....

Here comes Carm again with "You've had an accident, eh?  Well mine was worse!  And I have pics to prove it!"

Hey Carm, I put my head through my windshield and am now scarred for life.  Got anything better than that?  I'm sure you do.

Nope, didn't put my head through a windshield, but I DID see my 300+ pound, 60+ year old lesbian neighbour passed out drunk and stark naked in the hallway of my old apartment building at about 2:00 AM - I had to step over her to get down the hall to my apartment. These lesbians (I called them Hank and Frank) used to get drunk and fight all the time, and I guess this one time they musta been "doing it" and the fight broke out, so Hank threw Frank out.

Naked. Drunk. Old. (Very) Fat. Lesbian. And in my way.

Now THAT's scarred for life. I couldn't close my eyes for days :D

I guess Should tell you that I did walk away from the wreck and that after getting someone flaged down to call for some help I walked back down the hill to the car. I waited untill the EMT''s got there and they wouldn't let me move becuase they thought that I had broke my back. It was really weird to be strapped down to a board and have 6 people carry you up the hill you just walked back down. Anyhow I could have be paralized but somehow I got lucky. The doctors flipped when I told them that I got out of the car and walked up the hill to flag someone down.

I bet I know what started the fight...

Hank says, "dear may be Frank with you"???

Frank says "Hell no.. you were Frank last night, I'm gonna be Frank tonight"....

And the fight was on.... :D
