Did that tree branch fall on your 'Bird? I saw the broken rear glass, but couldn't tell if there is any other damage, other than water damage of course. Are you able to to get her inside out of the weather?
Oh no :( :( :(
I saw dents in the roof and the trunk lid :( :(
Coupla years ago one night, we had a sustained wind that was about 80 mph, lasted for about 20 minutes followed by an epic t storm. It took down two monster oak trees in my yard, and thank Hell the wind was out of the north, had it been from the south, my house would be gone, and probably my family along with it
I must say you east coasters have to be a tough bunch to put up with hurricanes....I'll stay with my tornadoes and (sometimes) deadly lightning.
the branch came down on the back glass and the trunk. The glass is toast, and the trunk got a small ding. Could have been worse.....no place to put her......got a tarp on already.
Oh ! Yeah, I missed the dents the first time. I hope that the damage is minimal and easily fixed, but I would rather lose an entire car than a family member... Ok, well maybe not my Son's iguana... ;)
Same. I would never leave my car outside if I were in these areas with high winds.
You're just as crazy as them. Here we get, ummmm, well we had a very small, short tornado a couple years back. I can't think of any time I felt an earthquake HERE, but I went through a couple few-second long ones up near Seattle when growing up. Other than that, we get some rain, but much less in quantity then the people on the east coast. Winters are mild with no salt being put on the roads (typically sand only, and chemicals). Maybe 6 inches snow a year with the occasional 10-12" once a winter every few years. Summers are 3 months with nothing but clear skies, with maybe a week or two in the 90s/100s with the rest being upper 70s to about 90. Gotta love the pacific northwest :p
Pffff, I see a garage door :p
Build a cage for it - that'll ward off those pesky projectiles.
Now you really need to get her out to me :( ...... not going to jinx ya. Good luck weathering Sandy.
:(
Be safe over there, it's still very mild here in CT. I didn't even lose power yet.
My wife has a trip planned for this thurs to sun in Atlantic City should I make her cancel???

My bird is safely parked in the parking garage at college
Bigbada1 I wouldn't be going to Atlantic City this week. They will probably be cleaning up a mess down there. Sandy will be making landfall about now very close to the s points. I would tell her to reschedule.
That really sucks MY83T. We're having some pretty good wind gusts here. I worry about the neighbors trees. We just had 45' pine tree cut down which we were afraid would fall down in a storm. It was way too close to our house.
sandy....that bitch....
it supposed to hit us between 8 and 10.... the vert is outside... hopefully It will make it through this.... I had to decide which cars are more important... the 87 and the Town car won.... ;)
I can see saving the '87 (though the extra stiffening you put into that should make it stronger than any tree that might fall on it), but that Town Car would be out in the cold before I'd let anything happen to that convertible...
I feel for you guys. Hurricane Juan hit here 9 years ago and I still remember it quite well. First time in my life I was ever scared of the weather. I stayed up all night watching trees come down, and had no power for three days. Some areas were a month without power. We lucked out, though, and only got an inch of rain with that storm. The wind caused a hell of a lot of damage, though. I learned my lesson and made it a point to buy a generator, even before I bought a house. Still have that generator, wish I could lend it to some of you guys down south...
Atlantic city is under watter

This is AC as of noon EST. Still wanna go? LOL
Row-Row--Row your boat... ;)
All kiddin' aside, I'll wager that the casinos will be the first back into
normal operation.

Atlantic City, NJ Monday 10-29-2012
The pilings in the one photo used to carry the boardwalk.
I just officially lost power in my townhouse at Rowan University in South Jersey, the internet still works though... its gonna be a long night
Hang in there friends!!
We had high winds, lotsa rain and some snow/ice in SWPA last night. Actually pretty calm right now but from what the news is saying we could get a couple more inches of rain.
Well thank the lord we had no trees come down on the shop building or our HOMES!! I cant believe the LORD SPARED US. As the old growth is quite large. The shop is on backup Generator along with our HOMES. Their is no gas stations open as of today no power. But we have a back up supply of 100 Gallons for the generators. WOW WHAT A BAD NIGHT LAST NIGHT. Some people were not as lucky as us. A 150FOOT tree fell on my neighbors house and caved in the entire house, His kids were trapped and the fireman got them out early this morning. They are in the hospital doing fine. Thank the LORD. Be safe and god bless.
Praying that all of our friends are doing alright up and down the East coast this morning.
Yup, looks like things are getting off to a good start for 12-21. lol
We had 4.75" of rain as of this morning. The wind was gusting pretty good most of the night. Only lost power for a total of an hour or so. We normally lose power for much longer. One of the neighbors trees fell accross our lane overnight. The township was out early this morning to cut it up. I believe things turned out better than first expected, in my area anyhow.
Overall it was pretty mild for this part of the state. Some powerful gusts, a bit of rain; nothing to write home about. Last year was much worse, Hurricane Irene left me without power for 11 days.
I hope the rest of you guys made it through okay.
^This. Pray all is well for you guys that are getting hit hard.
from what my cousins in LI say... there wont be power there for about 4-5 days...
Can you just imagine the smell... Ugh!
We actually got some....wind.....in Chicago from the storm.
Good luck to all you guys on the east coast.
we got some rain, some wind... it died down around 2 last night...
45 mph was probably the highest gusts we had
Just got to a spot with a signal to let you all know that Sandy kicked our ass. House had 3 feet of water, total loss cars are total loss 3 including my Bird....were all safe and dry and my parents.... Insurance will do the rest...thoughts and prayers please......
David
dude, that sucks more than I could comprehend.
I am sorry. :(
Wow that's awful, just awful.
Thoughts and prayers to everyone on the east. Be safe friends.
David, you and your family are all in my prayers.
David,
I am sad to hear of your troubles. It's a time for families and friends to stand together. Material items can always be replaced, but loved ones cannot. I'm glad to hear you and your family are safe.
David, glad to hear you and your family are safe. Our thoughts are with you as you recover from this disaster. We had it pretty mild here in central PA.
David, my families thoughts and prayers are with your entire family. It's great to hear that you & your family are alright. That's something that can never be replaced.
It sucks big time that your house and cars are a total loss, but those can be replaced.
John
PM sent
Sorry to hear that about the house and cars. Glad you're all safe. Stuff can be replaced...
3 feet of water isn't so much. I don't know details, but I think you may be able to rescue your stuff, if the house or other buildings didn't fall down because of the wind strokes.
And as was mentioned above, it's good to read, that you, and your family are OK.
I talked to Dave this morning.... he's staying with family close by... family is ok... his work studio is ok.. He says everything else is pretty much gone, below the 3-4 foot mark.... and seeing they have a ranch house built on a concrete slab... it means that almost everything is ruined by salt water..
the house will have to be totally stripped inside and out, and rebuilt after .... He's already talking to the insurance co about it
his new cars are also water damaged inside and out... salt water everywhere....
Surprisingly, he told me that his bird was only a little damp inside, even with a missing back window, with a tarp over the car... apparently our car doors seal very well compared to a new car.. the thinks it will be salvageable and he will be able to use it as a temp DD until things get settled.....
He also asked me to post to tell everyone he's ok, and cell phone coverage is spotty with all the power outages, so it will probably be at least a few days until he can get back online..
Jerry
salt water corrodes everything metal it comes in contact with..... wiring plumbing nails holding your house together, electronics... think about everything you own in a house that is stored below 3-4 feet.. unless its in an upper cabinet, or a shelf closet. Its pretty much a goner by the time you can get to it and try to save it
Thanks Jerry........to all here, thank you for the well wishes and kind thoughts. Still no power to over 90% of Long Island. Long lines for Gas, food etc....cash only....., like a third world country. My office in the next town has power, internet etc, so i took the family over for a little normalcy. Charge up the phones, laptop etc, even managed to snag 2 cheese pizzas fresh for dinner. No heat, hot water, power, gas range so we can heat water and cook. Coolers with ice wont go more than another day or so. If anyone wants to chat or IM my cell is 516-978-5988 i get sporadic signals. Thanks again for all the support, its a nice family we have here.
Well, if it's a salt water, it's much worse. That's true. I thought it's just fresh water with dust and rubbish, like I know from our country.
It'll probably be that T-Bird's lack of technology that saves its life. An insurance company would undoubtedly write it off, but even if it was totally submerged it would not be beyond the skills of even backyard guys to make it right. There simply aren't that many electronic components in these old things, and of the few that are there they can be replaced, or better yet, upgraded (such as yanking a waterlogged 3.8 and C5 and replacing it with a 5.0 HO and AOD or T5). The interiors are easy enough to strip out, clean up, and dry out. New cars have so many vulnerable and very expensive electronics, many of them mounted very low in the car (including airbag sensors in and under the seats, and various sensors and/or actuators under the car). I wouldn't be surprised if that Audi and Flex were both written off. It would probably be a good thing if they were, because they will never be the same and their resale value will be horrible with a "flood" branded title.
David, my thoughts and prayers are with you and your family. Here's to hoping you can get some semblance of normalcy back in your life...
Yeah you have your T-Bird and then a ~2005 or so and newer BMW with over *seven MILES* of wiring. (Friend worked for the local big-cheese BMW stealership in HS and that's what he was told). Stone age wins!
major bummer!
Still no power... Cars are getting towed out today , and got a claim # from the ins co. More news to follow.....
My Daughter lost her brand new Chevy to flood water. Came in the car and JR and the insurance CO TOTALED IT. Had 16K on the SPEEDO. My SON IN LAW IS A MEAT HEAD!!! Could have brought the car to the shop where it would have been safe!!!
Really? Come on Tom, you and I both know that your Daughter could have brought it to your shop just as easily. I can say this since I have a Daughter and a Son-in-Law as well, so I have been there and done that. But as much as we love our children, they are going to make mistakes, and it stands to reason that some of them are gonna be whoppers. In this case, all that is lost is a car...and a "brand new" Chevy at that... nothing to get in a twist over. An expensive lesson perhaps, but no one died, so on balance I'd say she got off pretty easily.
I wonder if conspiracists blame the hurricane on the construction and car companies so that they get more work and sales... :p
I don't understand why people wouldn't find a place prior to a hurricane to park their vehicles? I'd have driven inland a day or two before, found some hill, and taken a taxi back, or keep the car that you care about the least with you. I saw some photos of some pretty nice cars (older) that people just left on the sides of roads, at the lowest elevations.
I am really not mad. But my Son In law brought his car to the shop. D'OH!!!! Whats With THAT!!! It is an EXPLORER.
88 i have three son in laws. They all brought their cars to the shop except Jenny. She told me Anthony did not want her to drive in the storm. This was early Monday morning. D'OH!!! Not to worry it is an insurance issue now. All is well and that is the bottom line!!
Wow! Three Son-in-Laws, you must have the patience of a saint... ;)
Yes my family is great. Especially my girls. They always love you more than the boys. You know what i mean. A Son is a son till he takes a wife. A daughter is a daughter for the rest of your life.
Things are still very bad here; long gas lines, no info, 6 days no power....
Hang in Dave the ARMY BOYS are coming to help with the clean up. I know how you feel it SUCKS. Do you have a GENERATOR?? A must around here fore sure. Keep cool and be patient. GOOD LUCK!!
Help on the way.
Hang in there Dave. It definitely sucks not knowing when you will have electric, when you will be able to get gas, when things will be back to normal. I have never been through such a situation but I can understand the frustration and anxiety. Hope things get back to normal soon for you and your family.
Still no power, schools still closed...long gas lines, finally got a dumpster, and the house has to be emptied, inventoried, gutted etc...im exhausted and cant sleep, wouldnt wish this on anyone.
i just caught up on this thread David. so sorry to hear of the disaster over there. hopefully some relief is on the way. hang in there.
Are you getting snow where you are? If so, I hope you and your family has a warm dry place to stay.
I just found this thread. Now I can keep up with you on here as well as facebook. Been thinking alot about you, hope it gets better soon for you and everyone in the area. Most of my friends I work with from WV finally got thier power back yesterday, hopefully your's won't be off to much longer. Take care bud and keep us updated.
Still no power, and loads of snow..... This is just silly already. I have to leave my family also from sat-wed for a conference i photograph every year in DC. Uuuuugggghhhhh! Adjuster is getting to me on the 20th, got some new clothes yesterday for all of us, and FEMA has given us a whopping 3k in aid. Replaced my wifes Ford Edge with a 2013 Ford Escape. I still have no car. :-(. Thanks to all who have written, given moral support and those who have offered to help materially. We appreciate the love and generousity.
Hey Dave sorry to hear about all your bad luck. I went out last night during the storm at 3 am and was able to get gas for all my cars and parents cars. (4 total) I was able to also get gas for my generator. No lines or anything. It was the 7-11 gas station on Rte 110 in Farmingdale (close to Allen Blvd.) I hope that helps.
Ken
Dave I read your thread over on FEP which has a bit more information that this one does. You didn't say who was so generous, but I would like to thank them for their generosity as well.
I PM'ed those who sent or gave.......im a truly humbled and amazed at the generousity of people.
power has returned after 14 days.......some normalcy. FEMA is useless and wont see my insurance adjuster until 11/20. Down in DC for business, anyone nearby for a beer? Here until Wed. AM........
good grief, what a rough couple weeks for you and your family. hope somehow you can come out on top. hang in there
Wow, just read from the beginning of the thread. 3ft of water in the house is devastating. The inside will need to be stripped to the framing and dried out, then rebuilt from the inside. I've worked on flood jobs before, but usually not as severe as yours. I hope your bird and other irreplaceables are ok. The next 6-8 months are going to suck, but if its anything like insurance losses I've worked on you may end up with a completely remodeled house that is updated and to your specs. We always let the home owner have free reign to have us rebuild it however they want, including moving walls to change the floor plan, kitchen cabinets, flooring, and mechanicals, ect. Even so, I would not want to be in your shoes right now. I hope things work out for you and your family. Keep us posted.
If I was in the area I would buy you a beer. You deserve one or two cold beer. Glad to hear they finally got the power back on.
Here is the awful shiznitty mess that used to be my house.....

That's awful to see. Are they only stripping up to the water level?
they took one foot above the water level. Thats what the Insurance authorizes.
DUDE that sucks. I did not realize how bad you got hit!!!! Why would they not remove the entire section of the sheet rock??? It in my view is easier to do full sheets than try to tape it in the middle. At 6 bucks a sheet for rock they must be kidding. God Bless And take care. Keep the faith BROTHER. Time will heal your wounds. Hope you are in good spirits and get your home repaired fast, GOOD LUCK!
Thanks Tom, they may end up removing it all, its an insurance company thing for now.......and the priority was to open the walls and dry out everything before mold can grow.
David, that looks horrendous!! But thankfully they are starting the repair work. Any word on the vehicle situation?? The Bird looks so.. so.. unhappy sitting there like that. Best wishes on the recovery/remodel and keep your chin up.
David,
I'm very sorry to see how you and your family has been effected by Sandy. How is your company treating you though all this?
I am self employed, and have done zero business for 2 weeks......going back to sort out the mess today.......thanks for the kind thoughts.
Sorry for your loss... Hard to imagine...
We went through Isabel in '03 and even though there was much damage in the area, she was a walk in the park compared to what Sandy did to NY/NJ...
They do keep the water out pretty darn good. I think it was in 96' or 97' thereabout while living in Washington state, it flooded bad enough that Portland OR was cut off. I was living in Chehalis WA and my then-girlfriend came to get me from a truckstop 10 miles to the north. It took her 3 hrs to get me, but the trip home took almost 5 because the water had risen and either washed out the roads or was to deep. I was following a guy in his Toyota 4X4 (we talked on our CB's)and we were doing pretty good till we came up to this one area. The water wasn't deep, it was just standing, but it was just really far across. I went for it. I kept the rpms up around 3k but was only moving at about 3 mph. I didn't worry about burning up the clutch as it was being water-cooled lol. Irolled my window down and could put my entire hand in the water! I thought OH S@#T. The only issue i had was a BIG ford F250 came towards me pushing a wall of water in front of him. Window went up real quick!! The water went completely over my car! Much to my surprise it didn't die out. When I did get back home, I put the car up on my friends lift and changed all the fluids and surprisingly there wasn't any water in anything. I repacked the front bearings, refilled all the fluids and kept rollin along.
They don't make'em like that anymore
whats left of my house........

Wow..... Did they say how long till it's ready for you & your family?
Hey John, The real issue is the availability of materials for the rebuild. They are saying 8-12 weeks for a boiler right now....... i am crossing my fingers for a may completion....
Wow! May. I would imagine building materials and such could be in short supply with the high demand for them in the area. Is the insurance company putting your family up in a hotel for now?
David, that has me speechless. May, wow.
The scoop is that im covered for building and contents under my flood policy. Homeowners which has the displacement coverage for being out of my home for an extended period does not apply in this case. FEMA would pay for a 1 room hotel for 4 people in a not so convenient location for an extended period, but that would be hell for all of us. I am very lucky to have a cousin with a summer beach house in the town of Long Beach which is 15 minutes from my home, and its available to us through the end of May for free. I just pay utilities. A much more comfortable situation for all of us.
That's good to hear David.
good to hear... and surprising the beach house survived.
Building materials around here are creeping up in price. Not to trivialize your tragedy, but I'm sure glad I got my garage up before all this happened... its cost would have gone way up
Good to hear you have a place to stay. It really sucks to find out something isn't covered after the fact. Hope things get back together for your family soon.
Hi Guys,
A quick update as i have not been around much.
1. Got an initial proposal from the Insurance co for work to be done. Not exactly what we wanted, but we can appeal and tweak it a bit.
2. The contents adjuster finally came today, and now we have to attempt to catalog the lives of 4 people from the last 20 years. Fun.....
3. Settling into life at my cousins beach house and trying to find our family routine. Great place despite the carnage all around us. Its a miracle that this place survived intact with no damage for us.
4. Finally got a car rental after 6 weeks.....
5. Received the initial architects plans for a modest remodel and small extension. So we can get the ball rolling for bids on construction. Here is the floor plan 1st draft.
THANK YOU TO ALL HERE FOR ALL THE MORAL AND MATERIAL SUPPORT AND KINDNESS SHOWN TO OUR FAMILY DURING THIS VERY DIFFICULT TIME. I AM FOREVER IN YOUR DEBT, AND YOUR KINDNESS WILL BE PAID FORWARD TO OTHERS BY ALL OF US.
It would be difficult to just sit down one day and try to catalog or list all of your personal belongings, which you have lost, for an insurance adjuster. You could have a book full till you are finished. Good to hear things are moving forward for you and your family.
I'm glad to see it's moving ahead for you. Does the ins. co. have someone to help with cataloging your belongings? When my parents went through it from thier fire thier ins. co. had a lady come out and work with my mom. She was such a nice lady and was a huge help for her. It'll work out just hang in there.
The adjuster was super nice and cool, and gave me the vibe that they wont be checking too deeply into our claim based upon the level of destruction.
That's good. If you have any reciepts that helps too. My mom had alot of her's, not that she had to prove anything but it helped with knowing the actual price paid.
My basp00get flooded in 2008, of course, compared to your losses/damage, mine was microscopic. I couldn't imagine the the struggle you folks are going through.
Glad to see things are proceeding. You and your family are very much in my and my families thoughts and prayers. When you can/able call me anytime. I'm liking the revised house plan :D
John
Thanks John, both for the kind words and prayers. I will call you this week and catch up......
Sounds good friend :D
David,
All this must be quite stressful for you and your family. Thank GOD for your cousin! That will help keep things a bit more calm for all involved. At least the kids get to keep going to the same school and their friends are probably going the same problems also. That gives the kids some relief and more understanding about the situation. My insurance man made me take pictures of my belongings and just doing that was a pain, but I'm glad now that I did it. Hopefully, you and your family will get to forget your troubles for a little while and enjoy your Christmas. GOD BLESS!
Thanks so much for the kind thoughts.........
David, glad that your ok, and it seems things are getting a little better. whatever happened with the bird tho? i may have a few spare parts that i can donate to the cause if you need.
sure am glad someone is movin forward, cant say im not use to days or weeks without power though, my power usually goes out when other people need it, that part didnt make the news though. ... happens all the time. Thank goodness we got lots of snow though, it helped in food preservation.
Im just happy to see your getting it all together and making some progress, there are still boat loads of people who still dont have a pot to piss in up there and its depressing.
Is the birdie ok?
Thanks Chris, i have a forum friend that offered to undertake bringing the car back from the brink, so once its all settled i may take you up on your kind and generous offer. Thanks so much!
Car was flooded and had water inside up to the lower dash panel. Not sure what can be done, but a fellow member here with amazing skills has offered up his services and i am working out details on that with him.
It would be nice to see the car saved. I don't like to think about that much salt water being inside a classic car.
You and me both Bryan....but...i have no plans to ever sell the car, and its all sentimental to me, so i will do whatever i can/must to see it brought back to life.
A little update for you all......finally have proper plans, an insurance settlement with check in hand, and now we are interviewing builders.......PROGRESS..... here are the plans...small extension on the back for a master BR and Bath.

Lookin good David :D It'll be nice to have all that extra room.
its huge in there now
For sure John, its a long time coming.....
Just a communist build.......a redistribution of living space Kamerade......
It's nice to see it comming along! This reminds me so much of my parents house after the fire.
A Tsunami would have made it easier as everything would have been gone.......this was more agonizing cause we had to sift through the ruins of everything......
I though that when my garage was built. Then I put two cars and tools in it. Not so big anymore :hick:.
Your house is going along great. It's really nice that you were able to get the rebuild going kind of quickly. Hopefully you'll never have to deal with something like this again.
Thats the hope......my home and development have been there for 63 years.....1st time anything like this has happened.......hoping were good for another 75 years now.
That looks very nice!! Love the BIG frig/frzr :D
thats just the computer model, not sure we are going that large.....
todays progress......

Nice progress :)
its looking iffy about a May 1st move in date.......fingers crossed.
Keep everything crossed and maybe just maybe you'll hit that date
I wonder what architecture program that is. I remember trying to use Chief Architect nearly 10 years ago and then waiting over 24 hours for a single rendering to finish using the highest lighting and shadow options. The software makes it awesome to see what your house might look like, just by adding some furniture into the blueprints.
I'll have to read the rest of the thread to see if you mentioned what you're moving around. I don't know what it looked like before so it's hard to say how the new changes will be an improvement.
Glad it's going well.
Post #111 has the blueprints for the remodel, you can see the old vs new lines on the inside and outside walls.
Thanks for the kind words and support.
That's looking good
I'm glad to see it moving along so well. That would be great if they're done by then. I'm sure you're ready to get back to normal.
I don't have words to express that feeling........
Yeah we were all really excited when my parents were able to move back home after their fire. It took them almost year to get it finished. It was just a couple weeks before Thanksgiving that year, we had extra to be thankful for.
Well, sounds the new home is coming along..how's the 'Birdy?
Low priority for now, as we need to focus 100% on the rebuild to get the kids back home. She is exactly where i left her in the driveway the day of the storm with a tarp over the back window to keep the rain out.
Some progress on the house after long delays for plumbing and concrete. Should start coming together quickly now.

Always good to see fresh boards in place...although I'm sure you're long past seeing them. You guys all in the house yet, or still waiting? I couldn't dream of what it would be like to be in your shoes in this ordeal...godspeed on the progress. :)
Supposedly god never gives you more than you can handle ....... Its been a rough road getting to this point, but im sure the finished product will have been worth all the BS. Thanks for the kind words......
Looks good David. It appears they're making decent progress now. Praying that it gets finished quickly for you. :)
Very nice progress David :D
