when i take off from a stop it makes a whirring whoo-ing sorta noise all the way through 1st and for the low part of 2nd, havent got the foggiest of what it could be
Maybe you're hearing the planetary gearset. Mine makes a similar sound, but since I opened the exhaust a bit, I don't hear it over the engine anymore.
low on fluid?
Low fluid, failing pump or seriously worn out transmission would be my guesses in order of probability.
My AOD makes those noises as well. I don't think it's a good noise for it to be making though...
It's not so audible in Foxes, but in dead-stock quiet exhausted Panther cars, the howling of the planetary gearset, as mentioned, can definitely be heard in 1st at 2000-2500 or so RPM lightly accelerating, I don't think I ever hear it in my Vic in 2nd, but it's possible. I remember Grandma's '86 Town Car doing this as well.
This is a normal sound for the planetary gearset to make, as Zonda mentioned, the quieter the car, the more you'll hear it. My trans is fresh and all the parts are new. I hear it, 2 years ago when we were still selling new crown vics, I heard it from them, too. You're good, worry about something else.
sweet, thanks guys, topped it off after doing some prep work for the track and it stopped it :D
