Title: CFI & SFI intakes
Post by: jwlott85 on October 10, 2012, 11:07:46 PM
Are the Throttle body injection intake manifolds cross compatible with later style heads? looking into putting newer heads on the 85

Yeah.

If I was in your shoes, I'd ditch the CFI, and nab the heads and intakes off of a 5.0 Explorer/Mountaineer, and then find the mass air meter/wiring/eec from an 89-95 Stang, not to mention the cam, as well. Keep in mind with the GT40P heads you'll need special headers, look for BBK1515 if you go that route. You can also use Mustang stock shorty headers, but why pinch off that airflow out of your cylinders..The P's also have a bit smaller combustion chambers, but if you go with an HO cam, you will likely need pistons from a Mustang HO block. In fact, I'd buy a good lower end from a 5.0 Stang, swap on the 40's and expl. intakes, and use it. Then you'd already have the HO cam and the forged slugs with valve reliefs. (except for the '93 5.0's..those had hyper pistons.)

It won't be "fast" by today's standards, but it'll be a hell of lot more power than what ya have now.

I thought you couldn't do that with an 85 block  because the stock pistons went into the heads slightly... or was I mis-informed

The block/pistons will be fine with GT40P heads. The pistons are actually better than stock 86-88 SO pistons as they have valve reliefs. Depending on when his car was built it may or may not have a roller compatible block, as it has a flat tappet cam from the factory. He would have to use link bar roller lifters if his block is not a factory roller compatible block to run a factory HO cam.

Interesting FYI: the 86-90 5.0 SO and the 86 5.0 HO are the only factory Ford 302s to have flat top pistons with no valve reliefs. They all have E6 heads. The truck engines from the same time period, with E7, heads have valve reliefs.

yeah the plan was to throw in a cam, headers and exhaust and go carburetor since it would take less time to get tuned and build an efi motor on the side, its harder to find P heads in indy theses days :/
