Title: Headlamps bulbs - 100/80W
Post by: Shevretti on June 10, 2005, 06:17:14 PM
Hi!
Thought I will ask before I use. What do you think of putting 100/80W 9004 bulbs into 1987 T-bird headlamps? I just dunno if they won't burn the switch?

they will indeed burn up the switch, you need to do the relay mod

Painless sells a plug in relay harness for the 9004.  Just got to run the ground and power and mount the relays.

Isn't there a relay for the hi-beam?

there is a relay for the "flash to pass", but no relay for the on/off function, all the current is sent through the switch

You might also notice the very small metal heat shield above the bulb (inside the headlight) that's supposed to protect the plastic housing from melting due to the heat of the stock bulbs. Double the wattage, double the heat?
