Check the grommet that seals the filler to the tank. they are known to tear, and the filler tubes are known to rust down to the sealing area, which causes a breach.  I had to replace my filler tube AND my grommet just recently. I, too smelled fuel after filling up above half tank.

The other place too look at is the plastic housing that sits inside the trunk area where the filler tube goes through, then the tube goes through the trunk floor pan before entering the tank, I have seen them crack and alow the vapors to fill the trunk area and the passenger compartment. My housing cracked on my car and I could smell fuel everytime I filled the tank up.

Smoke it to find the leak. Best way to find it. But as posted above is very likely cause. Along with a rusted out tank!!!
