Title: GT40P heads
Post by: thunderjet302 on May 31, 2012, 08:38:30 PM
I'm selling the GT40P heads that I was running on my Thunderbird. The heads have about 6,000 miles on them. I removed the heads and replaced them with Edelbrock Performers. There is nothing wrong with them I just replaced them because I wanted to go faster ;).They have exhaust valves that have the same height for the valve locks as the intake valve so they don't have exhaust valve rotators. They are the stock GT40P exhaust valve size. The springs install at the same height on both valves so they don't need offset keepers or retainers if you use aftermarket springs. I'm asking $300 if you pick them up but it would probably be closer to $400 if you want them shipped as they are heavy. I do accept PayPal.

I may be interested, will have to see how much play money I have this month.  I would need them shipped though, Chicago is an 11 hr drive and I would spend more on gas then shipping I think

I'll see your 3 bucks, raise ya 5, and call. Well, anyway, they'll work with a stock SO cam, and even an HO, but with pistons w/o the valve reliefs, I'd be wary of a cam with any higher lift than an HO cam.

When I checked with my engine builder he said no way. He said with the stock HO cam the intake valve in the GT40P heads would smack the pistons. I think Zonda tried with the GT40s, stock block, and a HO cam and he had to fly cut the pistons for clearance.

You could clay your set up and see if they fit with your combo.

What is the difference between SO Block..And HO block..Is it only the pistons?? and nothing else?
FYI i checked with some big cats in the L.A racing scene here in CA..And my guy said they would work..Even with a certain ford racing cam..With no issues..

That makes me feel better...Was it a night in day difference in power in torque? Also did you leave your roller rockers stock..?

I'm using the factory stamped rockers and power difference is amazing....

I honestly can't even remember if I truly checked to see if everything would fit or not. The valves ARE bigger than those of E7 heads. However, if you have a drill, a random big-enough valve (just get a chevy 2.02 valve from the store), and some adhesive-backed sandpaper, it's so unbelievably easy to cut eyebrows in your pistons *just* big enough to not affect balance, but make sure there is enough room.

I am FINNNNALLY about to get the red car back out on the road, being spoiled with the black XR7 has led me to really drag ass on the few final steps. But I will be able to compare it, now with effectively a full GT40 setup, to when it had only an E7 setup. Whether you're comparing them to stock Mustang E7 heads, or especially stock Tbird/Cougar E6 heads, they are 100% worth buying, be sure you of course get the matching upper and lower intake, but power and torque overall jump up throughout the RPM range, and when it really winds up, the flow works for you and sends the motor wanting to go to redline and beyond.

XD...Does that mean i should consider performance spring and retainers..Man i cant wait till i get enough funds..

You need new springs if those on the P heads are stock. Worth it.

The springs in the heads are for the cam in my car. You will have to change the springs for the specific ones that are recommended for the cam you're going to use.

I'd love to get the from ya Lou, but I don't think that 302 I have would handle them and the cam I have. How big of lift can those springs handle?? I have a .588 lift cam not doing anything.
Title: GT40P heads
Post by: thunderjet302 on July 27, 2012, 12:15:10 AM
A .588 lift cam would be too much. The springs are supposed to be good to .550 lift. I was just under that with my cam at .533 lift. With a .588 lift cam I would swap out the springs in the heads.

I was mistaken on the lift. I found the cam card and it's a .544 lift w/ 240/246 Dur @.50 lift.  Duration at .006 is spec'd @ 284/296  :D

I think that the cam duration might be too much for the springs. My cam is only 210*I/215*E at .050. With the higher lift and more duration the cam might be too much for the springs. At any rate the springs are used so I would change them ;).

not to put you down or anything Lou, but I can pick up a complete P engine for what you are asking for the heads alone.

True but you have to go through the heads and engine. You can just bolt these on and go. It's cheaper than having a junk yard set gone through at a machine shop.

BTW no offense taken :).

Good point, I forgot how much I spent having mine milled and reworked. Something like $350
