I have never seen this before on here or even noticed it in person before today.

It isn't useable, part of the cluster circuitry cover that spot, but it is still funny how Ford designed it in there to not use it.
That would have upped the cool factor so freakin far if they had done it
.... although I'm sure it would get incredibly annoying in a DD which is probably why they didn't put it in...
My 86 5.0 Mustang that I bought new had a functional shift light .... for about a week until I pulled the bulb
That sucker was lit ALL the time ...lol
The idea was to promote a fuel-efficient driving style, but I think most people would ignore it after the first hour or so. I saw a 5-speed Escort wagon that had it in the early '90s.
I've seen them in other cars and I understand the purpose of them. But I never knew that they were in the TC and to the best of my knowledge these clusters were only used in the birds. I just find it odd that they took the time to design it into the cluster to not use it.
My parents had an 86 escort wagon 5 speed and I remember it having a shift light
All the 80's Escorts with a 5speed had 'em...at least, every one that I've ever seen did. Unfortunately, I've seen a lot of them..
Did the 80's Escorts have the same cluster?
Negative, Ghostrider.
Didn't someone also find out that the full digital cluster had an over boost light? Seems Ford may have considered using it in the Turbo Coupe at some point.
My old 92 Topaz 5spd had the same thing.
