Title: Network Computer Help Fast Please!!!!
Post by: Superman on June 06, 2005, 08:42:48 PM
Hey everyone, I have two computers, both connected by one ethernet cable and none have an internet connection. I tried to use XP Home to setup a Network between the two, they both are on the same network name, and both are sharing the C drive. But When I go to work group drives nothing shows up for either one, please help me out here.

I forget the settings you need to make sure are set for file sharing between networked PCs, offhand.. and I'm too exhausted from this cold to think long enough to get 'em. But off the top of my head, you need to make sure of things like unique names for each PC on the network.. make sure file and printer sharing is enabled on both, or at least the one you want to swap files on.. try giving the shared drive an easily-recognizeable name so it pops out at you in the Network window, something like "TRANSFER" or whatever.. if you're doing direct PC to PC networking, make sure you have the appropriate cable for eliminating the router/hub/whatever.. (it has at least one pair of wires reversed from a normal network cable) try using the Network Setup Disk that XP allows you to make on the computer that hosts the connection. That's just off the top of my head.. if this doesn't help, try a site like Annoyances.org (http://www.annoyances.org) and see what they have to say about it.

That would be a Crossover cable. Also manually set the ip numbers to static ones (i.e. 192.168.0.2 on one and 192.168.0.3 on the other) and  make sure the gateways and such match, using the numbers above for example it would be 192.168.0.1. While you're at it plug in the subnet number to be 255.255.255.0. Once all is said and done, the computer's ought to be able to see one another.

Netbios won't be needed in this situation, tcp/ip should already be installed regardless. Oh, how about a move of this thread into the right section??

Here's how I set files sharing between 2 PC's (Win 2k Proff, and Win XP Proff) Using a D-Link 8 port switch, connected to a Router. (ADSL Modem > Router > Switch > PC1 and PC2)  This might solve that problem?  (although I didn't have a problem with the PC's showing up on the network, just accessing the files)

Administrative tools > Computer Management > Shares > "Select Share Folder or drives" > Properties >  Security > Add User > Add User name > Click Ok.  *(I created a new user profile w/ password in order to access the PC off another one)
