Title: Project "Red Phoenix"
Post by: Tbird-fanatic on April 27, 2012, 10:47:48 PM
Well all thats happened in the last couple weeks to my poor Tbird, I think the name is kinda fitting. From the blown head gasket to, tracking down boost issue and then being involved in an accident that most people would have just given up on it and sent it to the sper. The Phoenix part is coming from the damaged hood that is going to repair or make subtle body mods. So in a way parts are being reborn to let the bird live on.

Alot of these repairs are thanks to jangus for having every piece I needed to do this quickly, though I havent gotten really started on it. It wont take long, the hardest part is sectioning the upper core support section in and not looking like a hack job. I may replace the entire core support later on, but cant afford to have it down that long right now. Once Im down with going back to college, it will be my full on restore project to this thread will continue for a while. These pics will show how I got it and should show the rust I need to repair, all the way to after the accident. Most of these pics are in other thread, but I wanted to condense them to one thread for the progress of it.

These are right after the accident, I had no clue what was all damaged at this point.

These are after about an hr of redneck straightening after I got it to my father-in-laws, so I could see fully what needed replacing and was of coarse surprised at how little needed to be.

What size are those tires and wheels? Those look mean!
Title: Project "Red Phoenix"
Post by: Tbird-fanatic on April 28, 2012, 02:06:41 AM
They are 235/60/15's, not sure on the width of the rims. I still need to get a full set of matching center caps but I love the look of the wheels on this car. It needs to be re-done, but on the inside of the holes was painted to match the car. Its one of those little things that just brings everything together. Im not a big fan of the Cooper's that are on it, but they are getting me by for now. Ive had the passanger side tires on a road force balance and they are all kinds of out of round. So Im now on the look out for a set of tires that I like the look of, yes Im picky about my tires now.

Oh and on a side note I forgot to put in up top, one of the hoods and a set of fenders I got are in color and rust free. So the front fenders will be replaced at the same time as the damage is fixed. No more lower rusty fenders!!!! I also got a known good working ABS set up so that should help with this not happening agian also. Also got a good passanger side taillight(original has a crack at the top), so sometime in the future the taillights will be getting tinted. I love that look!!!

I hate to do this to you, but that was the project name for my Sport. You'll have to change it. Maybe.......um...." Project Thunderbird Repair" or something.........

Well, On the other hand, I'm a really nice guy. I'll let you use it, but you must have a disclaimer to clarify that you're not working on my car in the small print.

Ill change it up a little, looks like Im gonna have to get ahold of a mod to do so though. Cant find a way to edit it myself. Ironically though, after looking thru many pages of mythology trying to find a nickname or something phoenix describes mine more!!!! LOL  Its literal meaning is - dark red, blood red! Sorry I had to!!! LOL Ill just have it changed to a contradiction, "Red Phoenix"!!! LOL Sorry Im in a good mood this morning for some reason. Feeling kinda funny!!! LOL

have a mod change what?
You can go edit your original post, as well as thread title...have to click on "go advanced" or whatever the button is that gives you the full WYSIWYG function...it's in the lower right hand side, next to where you click to post a reply. Same deal for editing, it's in that area, also.

Good luck with the TC...I'm curious myself as to the ease of replacing a core support...err, lower radiator support. mine on my Mustang is bent to hell and back.

Thanks on other forums Im on I dont have to go to advance edit to do that, kinda confused me!!! LOL

I think the lower section of the core support would probably be easier than the upper part. I have to do the lower to someday, just need to track one down that someone didnt mangle. It seems to be a common damage to foxes.

Yeah...so many people thing it's a fine place to hook a chain, tow cable, rope....it just makes me want to hook a chain through their throat and yank 'em around for a coupla miles.

EVERY ed Fox I have ever seen under the hood in person has had the  rad. support pulled up or or out. On my Stang, it's bent back toward the engine, because someone hit something with it. It was enough to pop the airbag and give it a salvage title :(

Anyway...there's a guy here, made his own radiator support from a piece of tubing...can't remember his name though, dang it.

All my previous Tbirds had good lowers ironically. I should look for that to and see exactly how it was done. I do got to agree though people hooking to what is the equivalent of a body part to pull the cars makes me want to scream.

Red Phoenix. Nice. I did use "Project Phoenix", but was still just messing with you. LOL. Good luck getting the old Bird back in shape. can't wait to see it back as it should be.

Figured as much, nice to be able to tell the difference threads. Im gonna be busting my rear Thursday thru Sunday, next Sunday being my b-day it would be a great present to myself to go for a spin in it!!! May not be full one color as of then, but just having it back together will make me happy for now. I figure if I can get all the body work done this summer Ill paint it after that.

Paint wise Im thinking most of the body stock color, but black underneath the trim. Ive been trying to come up with some kind of a stripe or something on the upper half, but I cant come up with something that I think would look good yet.

Ya Vinnie I can see mine looking like that before alls said and done.

Decided to somewhat prep my headlights that I got. One needed the back bracket put back on. Also the new fenders have the holes for the corner lights, so he hooked me up with the lights and matching trim. Ill put pics up as I take them and get time to put them up of the pieces!!

Can you post up a quartering rear photo of the car?  I want to see how those 235/60's look from the back end.  I may go with those on my car.

It could be a couple days, but Ill get one. Its out at my father-in-laws right now til I get it fixed(shed and a garage to work on it in). I do plan on trying to go a little wider and a hair lower profile when I replace them. Im trying to remember what my old 5.0 sport had on it for tire size, I really liked how they looked.

No new pics, but figured Id update a bit!!! The core support section is ready to be sectioned in, just need get the damaged stuff removed from the car. Im going to pick up a radiator from my buddy on Thursday morning, good thing he's kept extras from a few fox's hes parted out. Still need to find an extra set of hands to help me put the good hood on!!!

Now for the fun part, the fenders(rust free) I got from jangus have the turn light in them and he supplied me with turning lights and the trim also. Theres dead ended wires on the headlight harness, which I assume are for the turn lights. I only need one more socket, now the question is, are the dead ended wire powered or will they need to be hooked up somewhere. I need to see if the diagrams that I got have the exterior lights(which I dont think they do) if not I need to look at the FAQ section. I so want the turn lights, the 5.0 sport I had had them and I loved them!!!

Finally got some progress made today!!! Got the old fenders removed, damaged core support replaced. Have a few bolts to replace, but it went pretty well consider how old the car is!!! Still have to grind the welds smooth and paint/prime them, but unless I missed a spot(gonna double check tomorrow) its in place and solid. Gotta find a sucker...err.... volunteer to help me swap hoods, so I can get a straight one on there. There will be more updates tomorrow, hitting it hard agian!!!

Title: Project "Red Phoenix"
Post by: Tbird-fanatic on May 04, 2012, 12:15:35 AM
I think mission is an understatement !!! LOL    If I had been able to work on it for more than 3 hrs today, Id probably had all the cleaning and priming and fenders on!!! I still need to get 1 more bulb socket for the cornering lights and then to see if the relays and rest of the wiring under the dash is there. Ive got the wiring diagram for that system either way, so they will be functional one way or the other!!! LOL

If all goes well tomorrow also I will be draining the coolant and putting the replacement radiator in. My buddy surprised me by what he sold me, the radiator looks like it was only in the car he got it out of for a short time. And he only charged me $20 for it, with an electric fan on it to!!!

Getting closer to being driveable agian!!! Fenders are on, header panel is ready to go on!!  Need to get the hood switched out yet, so the fenders arent in final alignment yet. Decided to paint what was clear on the core support and around black, because at some point the motors gonna come out and Im gonna paint the whole engine bay black. New radiator is in  and should cool a little better, it was originally out of a 5.0 mustang so the cores are a bit bigger!! The color of the replacement parts that are in color isnt an exact match, but it will work for now. On to the progress pics!!!!

Way to go! You work fast!!

Id have worked faster if I hadnt decided to go back to school last fall. Class held it back to starting on Thursday. 3-6 hrs for 3 days can get alot done!! Then had a buddy come over to help me put the hood on, only thing I didnt want to tackle myself. Hopefully this week I can bring it into class and throw it on the alignment rack. So I do get to do what I wanted, take it for a spin tomorrow on my 32nd birthday!!!

Actually, from wreck, to back on the street, that was a fast turn around. No A/C? I tried that. nearly spontaneously combusted a couple of summers ago. Had to install everything. Nice and cool now during those days pushing 120 degrees.............and that is not a joke.

Theres been a pipe missing for I dont know how long and I have no clue if the pumps good. Ive really never had a car with good working A\C, so I have no clue what Im missing!! LOL  2 windows and a moonroof are the most Ive ever had in the way of A\C!! LOL  Besides it doesnt normally get anywhere near 120* up here.

I guess since you put it that way it is a pretty quick turn around, consider I didnt have a fully equipped body shop to use! I will say though, if it want for jangus having pretty much everything I needed Id still be tracking down parts. I cant thank him enough for all the parts and the deal on them. Oh and I even got a foglight to since my drivers one had a cracked housing and corroded wires. Now they both work and Im happy as a lark!! Of coarse all the members deserve a thanks for all the support. Cant wait to start the rest of the rust repair!

Not ready for another across state run!!! LOL If ya were closer Id say sure!!!

Had some stuff laying around and decided I wanted to change/clean things up just a bit. Of coarse in the process I also realized that the turbo needs to come off to replace the turbo to manifold gasket as its leaking out the bottom side. On a bright note though heres how some things changed!

Thing have been going good for the car, had a fuel line issue that turned out to be the pump to pump hanger hose ruptured. No biggy but it did scare the $h!t out of me!!  Decided I didnt want to trust the factory boost gauge anymore, so I picked up an aftermarket one and a universal pillar pod. Not fun modding the pod to fit my pillar and its not quite done yet, but its good enough to hold it for now. I need to get ahold of an actual heat gun so I can form it a little more. Hopefully this gauge can help me diagnose any issues in the future, since its boost/vacuum.

Lighting for it hasnt been done yet, thats why the wire are just hanging there. Boost line is already hidden, found out it dont like to uncoil very well!!! LOL I only had a couple hours why my daughters were taking a nap to be out doing this and I really didnt have the patience this morning to pull the lower dash apart!!! LOL In do time, I dont drive much at night anymore so it can wait a day or 2 to get them wired. I need to grab some of the damaged sheet metal from the FIL's though. I wanna start doing my rust repair here when I have free time. Id like to get it ready for paint by the fall (fingers crossed!! LOL ) Also need to start saving for some tuning product so I can get this old girl running optimal and do some upgrades!!! A local guy from turboford is gonna help me with tuning once I get the stuff.

Thanks to 1bad88tbird Im gonna be having working cornering lights soon, since he actually had a relay harness floating around yet. Also getting a shift  from him so that I can get the stang  off and put an actual TC  on. Its not perfect, but the leather is there and not ripped. Garrenteed it will look better than the stang or the original that was in it that the leather was ripping off of!!!  Oh and just for vinnie I got the lights for the boost gauge hooked up and the wires hidden for the most part. If you look thru the windshield you can see a short section, because I didnt want to drill a hole in the trim yet just incase I find a pod that fits better. With the vacuum side of the gauge I can tell that the bulk of my motor is healthy, its pulling almost the perfect amount of vacuum for certain conditions.

Well and as usual I get more done on a day off. Got an extra passanger side taillight to replace mine, since it has a crack in it from someone screwing it on:mad:. Well as I havent been able to leave anything alone on the car I decided to do a little work to it!!!  This is just sprayed and Im still playing with doing the red reflector parts, just haven decided yet. Need to clean and prep the driverside to do the same thing yet, possibly by the weekend.

Also its starting to be time to start rust repair. Was out where all my spare parts are at and decided I needed some metal to start!!!! Well if this idea works out Im gonna have a custom mod, we'll see though. Got more metal than I need for the area so ignore the edges, forgot to bring my cut off wheel so I had use a pair of snips.

Thanks I ho-hummed around the idea of getting one til right before I left. Almost missed the bus home I waited so long!!!LOL  I was hoping to have the body work started on it before the show, but work took most of my time and energy up this past month. Hoping I can get some where on it before the next show in a couple months. I should get a sticker made that says "Work in Progress" for it, so people understand Im actually working on restoring it.

Well the show and cruise was a blast. Got compliments on my shirt and bringing out something other than a stang. My tires have a few less miles on them needless to say!!!!! LOL You can all guess why that is!!!! Only pic I had time to get, but Im gonna see if I can get my hands on some that other people took.

On the working on it front I finally got a burr up my rear and got the CEL working, no ones ever bothered to put a bulb in it.

I also had a sad day just 2 days ago. The 24 year old fuel pump finally died on me!! LOL  But the good news is Im now running a Walbro 255hp pump. Ready to start getting stuff to gether for more mods. Unfortunatly I had to change it in this heat wave we've had in the parking lot of the store it wouldnt start in.

Body work had officially started to fix rust. Started on the right rear quarter, and ended up using some fenders I had for the mthere's just no cars in yards around here for me to steal pieces off of, so I get to make my own quarter pieces. I'm not quite finished yet, rain and some other things slowed the progress. Got just a little more welding, grinding, and sealing till I can move on.
Oh and most of that black is a primer so I don't have the moisture rusting it already.

Made more progress on the body work, not 100% done because I ran out of hardener. But its looking alot better than it did when I started!!!

Ironically today I actually had someone offer to buy the car. If I knew I could pick another that didnt need quite as much work, Id had told him make an offer!!! But Ive also fallen in love with this car, so I dont think I could actually let it go.

I went through a lot worse with the Sport, and others have gone through WAY worse than I have, but it's worth it to keep the car, and in the end, be able to say that you did it yourself. Means a lot to me anyway.

I agree thats why I told him its not for sale, then of coarse took him for a ride to he could feel how one felt. Dang rain made it an interesting ride  though!!! We were going sideways until 4th!!! LOL

Im contemplating new tires soon and Ive been trying to figure out how to get these 15" rims to have the same diameter of the original 16" for speedo reasons. To get close enough to stock diameter and wider Id be looking at about a 295/50/15 (one of the only feasable sizes I could come up with at the time that I can get relatively easy locally) and thats via a tire calulator. Right now Im trying to figure out if they will even fit without modding anything. I think once I get the tire diameter close to stock adjusting the trans speedo gear will be easier to find the proper tooth one. Right now Im right about 10 mph faster than actual speed (gps tested). Also Im gonna be swapping trans's soon. The one in my car either has a synchro problem or possibly a bent shift fork, it grinds in 1st and 2nd no matter what and 3rd and reverse sometimes. Sometimes I even have to fight it into 3rd. 4th and 5th are fine, no grinding or difficulty in shifting, but it never jumps out of any gear so Ive been leaning toward synchros.

Well thanks to ramair351 and 1Bad88tbird Ive gotten some more things working better or pieces Ive been looking for. I picked up a set of nos keys from ramair351, dont even have them cut yet and had people liking them!!! From 1Bad88tbird I got the cornering lamp relay harness, a headlight switch, and a TC shifter . Harness and switch are already in and working. Thanks to both these guys Im getting the motivation to start tinkering agian.

Last week I had to swap 5 speeds, broke all 3 of the synchro keys on the 3-4 hub. Not to mention the synchros have been gone in 1-2-3 since I got the car, just had to find time to swap. Well I had to make time, I couldnt use 3rd at all. In the process I found out that the old trans and the new one are both out of late 80's mustangs, not even TC's. Only reason I found out was I was verifying that it was a WC T5 by the id tags on them. The old one will be rebiult and by me even!!! It'll be nice to have a back-up just incase I damage this one, especially since this replacement is 20+ years old it self.

Thanks, Im still far from done though. I still have in front of the wheel wells on boths sides and the other rear quarter to do and the door bottoms. I just havent had the time to do it yet. Ive also got a rust free trunk lid waiting to go on next spring, should also be when I can at the latest get the rest of the rust repair completely done. If everything goes as planned the cars coming completely apart next fall/winter so I can take care of any surface rust and hopefully get some fresh paint on. Then Ill worry about getting the seats recovered. Im also trying to track down moonroof parts so I can get it fully functional agian. Pretty sure my motor is fine and obviously the glass is, but some of the brackets/or what ever they are are broke. It only has one side still fully connected.

Well as Ive told some of the guys Im in school for Auto Tech finally got into some of the fun stuff(get bored at my age with the stuff Ive been doing since 16!!). Engine Performance, first part compression tests and cylinder leakage. Decided to see how the TC stacked up considering its 25 yrs old with close to 200,000. Well to my surprise it passed with flying colors!! first puff 110 psi 5th puff 160, dry compression test. Cylinder leakage test no more than 13% which was going past the rings which is well within acceptable!! Almost like shes not even broke in yet!!! LOL

Well had a bit of a set back on the body work on the passenger side. I was doing some running around this morning and had the passenger rear tire literally blow out with no warning. A section as wide as the tire and about 2 foot long ripped completely off the tire at about 70 mph, but not before damaging the piece that I put in and bending a seam in the wheel well. I believe I can straighten it back out, but it still sucks. I forgot to grab a pic of the tire before the tire shop took it but it was pretty bad. Ill grab a pic of the damage to the quarter tomorrow though.

Well in the last couple weeks Ive had some good and bad things going for my Tbird. The bad first, Sunday night I was headed home from gassing up, got on it and it backfired and died. Wouldnt restart at all, trailer it to work today and found that my Distributor gear sheared a bunch of teeth off and slightly damaged the intermediate shaft gear. And between the spoiler and turbo Im only into them for about $55, gotta love pick and pulls that are cheap!! LOL
 (http://i639.photobucket.com/albums/uu112/highraven1999/2013-04-01_15-25-15_7_zps34e605de.jpg)

Now onto the good, I went to a local pick and pull on a lead of a fox tbird. Low and behold it was an 83-84 TC with a bunch of usable parts, 2 interested me in particular. First and the main reason I made the trip is what I have been told is a relatively rare FMS spoiler. Needs some repair, but is in very usable condition. I like hard to find parts!!! 2nd is the T3 off of it, it may need a rebuild(Im not sure yet). But it will be better for my immediate plans for the car than the IHI. Both will be going on my car as soon as they are ready to be installed. The spoiler will go on my current rusty trunk lid so I can get its holes drilled right. then when Im ready to start prepping for a repaint Ill make a template and transfer it to the rust free trunk lid.

Hit your local pick and pull up before it happens. That way your not like me, having to make a special trip just for it. I thought I was gonna be one of the lucky ones and not have it happen. Hopefully fixing this also fixes my weird idle!

I do think eventually Im probably gonna get the billet Esslinger shaft and a bronze distributor gear. Then all Ill have to do is change out the dizzy gear.

Ah, the dreaded dizzy gear failure. At least it didn't explode on you and fill the motor full of metal chunks and shavings.

From what I've heard those Bronze Dizzy Gears are so soft that they wear out every 5-7K, you really wanna have to change your gear that often?

Im just trying to come up with a way that if it happens agian that the chance of having to track down a shaft are greatly reduced. I can pull the dizzy in my sleep!!! If I can find a better alternative.

I think its all available thru esslinger.

On a good note the car is back together and running great so far. Gonna take it for a few short test runs tomorrow to make sure everything is 100% good to go. And I have a Kirban AFPR on its way to me. Which is a good thing!! Every since I put the Walbro in Ive been on the very rich side. When I put a pressure gauge on, my psi has been 40 with vacuum connected and 45 without. I put it on a 4 gas buttstuffyzer and the hydrocarbons(raw gas!!) hovered each side of 1000 ppm, ran it up to 2500rpms and it was still well over 500 ppm. Even if I had a Cat on it would still have been way to high. Now I just need to figure out a good fuel pressure for 15-18 psi of boost.

Test drive went great today. Over the weekend Im gonna check everything over and adjust as necessary. Seems to idle just a hair lower than before and Ive got the timing set perfectly, so the first check will be base idle.
Title: Project "Red Phoenix"
Post by: Tbird-fanatic on April 14, 2013, 09:27:07 PM
In the last 2 days Ive figured some stuff out and found that I need to do some work to things! First I picked up a Kirban afpr and got my pressure down to where it should be. After the Walbro install I found that my pressure had me running way rich. After the install its running alot better and my mpg should go back up.

Found out Ive got to replace the drivers fog light glass yet agian. Im guessing a rock hit it and pretty much shattered it. So Im on the hunt for atleast the glass portion. The search is on!!

Decided to see how the FMS spoiler was gonna fit, well Im guessing either my trunk lid is tweeked(no biggy I have another) or the spoiler was originally ment for just 4 eye birds. So some modding of it is gonna be required.

Well good news I finally get to live up to my sig!!! The Tbird finally gets retired from DD status! Now the fun and restoration can slowly begin.

On another note I did get to put it on a chassis dyno about a month back, About 150 rwhp and 171 ft/lb torque. And that was in the regular fuel setting at 15 lbs of boost. It was running premium though, I just forgot to switch the setting over.
