Title: had a wreck, now wont start
Post by: Dougy_Fresh on April 26, 2012, 09:20:35 AM
88 v6 bird

first off, it's not the inertia switch, didnt even trip it in the wreck. i did go ahead and trip it myself and reset it just in case.

little background: the car has had a rough idle, stumbling when coming off idle, occasional stalling when put into gear, and an occasional ping for about 6 months now.

i still had spark after the wreck for a while but now i have no spark at all.

Is the coil getting power?

We picked up a rolled ranger once and there is a big connector by the battery that got pulled when the battery slid. Might check there, not sure how bad you wrecked your bird.

I'd start with...yup, you guessed it; codes.

Also, anything engine-wise been visually damaged as a result?

42- either system to rich or no o2 sensor switching detected

33- EGR (no egr stuff left on it honestly)

22- MAP sensor out of range

MAP sensor is a pita for causing problems. I'd check all your vacuum lines and make sure there are no breaks. I prefer to visually check the line from the manifold to MAP sensor and the one from manifold to the tree, then start pulling off and plugging individual hoses at the tree to see if anything changes. When I first got my car there were all kinds of vacuum line problems. I can't believe the thing actually ran to be honest. At one point the line from the manifold to MAP actually broke in half. That had to be fixed right away though. If vacuum's not a problem though then it is entirely possible you need a new MAP.

swapped on a known good MAP... no dice. it will run and drive if i turn the distributor about 1/2 inch clockwise but has NO power and seems to be rich as hell. checked all vacuum lines, all are good

would the FPR not functioning correctly cause it to only run if i mess with the timing?

i found an 88 5.0 harness for $75. almost tempted to just put my 5.0 in it and be done with the 3.8

Check for the obvious.  Vacuum lines, pinched fuel line.....you really need to go over the car thoroughly since a mechanical issue popped up after a collision.  One should do so after a collision anyway imo.

Run a new vac line directly to the map sensor off a clean vaccum source. Ignore the vac block. Everyone I have had had many leaks in it.

Verify the map sensor codes goes away. If it does, see if it runs any better with spout plug out. Have you verified good spark and constant voltage to the coil input wires? What color is the spark, and how constant is the coil wire sparking?

Leave your timing where it should be.

Run through this trouble shooting steps.
