Title: Go Kart Turbo.....Maybe.
Post by: V8Demon on June 06, 2005, 09:46:30 AM
I remember Sean posting he was lookin for someway to throw some forced induction on a go-kart motor and when I went out side to turn my pool filter on the idea hit me.....

If you could mount it so the impeller drive shaft ran off some type of belt setup you could have a centrifugal type supercharger....in theory anyway....My pool spins it at 4000 rpm's.  I think the major question is whether or not the plastic will hold up to the heat when you jam air down it instead of water.

i dont see why it wouldnt work, especially since how long are most people on go-karts? an hour maybe?

while it would work for a gain, i want a "proper" turbo, i saw a video online, where a kid had a go-kart, that did have a turbo, i just cant find a source for them

just get a sand rail and drop the engine from your mustang in it. Their street legal here.

thats not unique though, anyone can put any engine in a sand rail

i want to try to turbo a small, single cylinder engine

I'm no pump expert, but using a pump designed for a non-compressible fluid to pump a compressible fluid probably won't work out too well.

If he wasn't so ed set on using a tarbo on this, he could just use a smog pump. :p

Gotta agree with Jeremy on this one - a water pump would never flow enough air to turbocharge anything. The turbines would never spin fast enough, for one thing. If you turned that pump on and put your hand in front of it you probably wouldn't even feel much (if any) air moving.

Oh well, it's nice to see I actually remembered something for once at least :D

The air vs. liquid thing escaped me though, I guess the impeller design for a liquid is a totally different animal.  Am I right in this assumption?

Yep - a non-positive-displacement (like your pool pump or a car's water pump) liquid pump will allow a whole lot more backflow (or "blowby") - it has to, because if it didn't and something blocked the outlet something would break. Of course, a positive displacement pump (such as an oil pump) will break if you block the outlet.

you could maybe try to get diffrent impellers for it? I would maybe try an electric pump that they use to do those giant blow up thingys. Of course, what is the point if it is electric

Get a little turbo, fab a pulley on the exhaust end of the shaft (minus exhaust housing) and rig it up. Makes a lot more sense to me.
