easy way to take a ripped up, cracked and otherwise disgusting console lid and give it new life.. any idiot can do it, even if you lack any kind of upholstering skills.. i'm not an upholstery pro, but i do wrap things in tweed quite often
this will probably be a lot easier using vinyl, for a stock appearing refurb, as it is a little more forgiving with a little steam.. if your padding is trashed, you can se the remainder of it off and replace it, as well
basically, all you need is..
- the material you wish to use
- headliner glue/spray adhesive
- chalk or marker
- razor knife/blade
- philips screw driver
bare with me, i forgot to take 'process pics,' but you should be able to figure it out very easily

Tweed sure does look a lot better than it sounds. That looks real nice... or at least if it goes with anything else in the car.
it will.. i'm doing an insert on the door panels, the arm rest pads, my rear deck carpet and maybe some other odds and ends.. i'll probably end up doing the pillars and kick panels too, but that's after i get more tweed.. i only have half a yard of it right now.. thought about doing my headliner, buuuuut that's just too much IMO
Sufferin suckatash! It's Tweedy bird!
i should have seen that 1 coming.. lol going to do the dash pad, too.. it's cracked, so screw it
I did mine in leather a while back
do you agree that it's insanely simple and even the dumbest of people can do it with excellent results? i don't get why people go crazy over finding console lids that are undamaged, when they could easily refurbish their own
Mine took less than an hour and looked great.............. there are pics around here somewhere
EDIT : here

you used the same adhesive i did
i did the removable piece of my passenger door panel.. i love the way it meshes with the blue.. definitely going to pull the carpet off the bottom and replace it with tweed.. will definitely bring the whole panel together

Looks real nice!! Is that regular furniture upholstery material??
I was actually thinking of doing the same thing to my spare lid to see how it turned out. I wasn't thinking tweed, but basically the same idea. I just don't like the way the factory vinyl feels under my usually sweaty arm lol.
Isn't the factory stuff leather? The one in my T-bird is.
The thin ones are , the thick ones are vinyl
meh. leather, vinyl, I don't care it all gets sticky and hot in the summer just the same.
Sarjxxx, you definitely want a cloth cover. That way, when you're really sweaty, it'll soak up in the console lid cover so it can smell like a gym locker later on.
Because some people (myself, for one) wouldn't be caught dead with that horrid shiznit in any car. What's wrong with an original piece with no blemishes? Especially if you found it, paid next to nothing for it, and saved it from being perma-buried in some chinese landfill...
If i had to re-cover a console lid, I'd probably exert some effort into finding something that looked as close to stock as possible. Tweed wouldn't even be a choice. Might as well be like that one kid and stick some on your dash, just like he did with the woodgrain tape stuff. But hey, it's your car, and your judgement...or glaring lack thereof.
Well vin thanks for the smartassm but I'm not talking about that. I'm talking about when your car has been sitting outside in the sun with the windows up it all day and then you get in and put your arm down and either you scald yourself on the scorching hot lid or your a little sweaty from being outside yourself and you stock to it. But hey if you enjoy 1st degree burns and/or peeling your skin back off every time you move well I won't judge you. :)
Thanks for sharing. I'll probably start looking for some nice leather to redo mine in today!
No smartassm intended. Have you tried the console lid "cap" that is sold on Ebay? I have a mint cover stored away, and a cap on the current one in the Sport.....which I added a cup holder to. The heat really isn't bad on them. My point is, I picked up two cloth arm rests from the yard a while back for members here. I kept smelling something bad. I smelled the armrest, and that was it. Probably sweat and whatever else imbedded into the material.
Upholstery shop always does my console lids...real leather or vinyl, no issues, always professional, not really that much money either. Vinyl has lots more color choices as well.
I've done them myself before and have been happy with the results. It's just that, for the money involved, it's much more efficient to drop off the parts to the upholstery shop 1/4 mile from the office and have them do better work.
They ought to be able to be cleaned with a shampoo just the same as carpet/seats/etc.
May be.
