Is Nick going to post numbers, or will it be up to me? Hmmm.....
im mad i missed that, i got the news from the other Nick
Post It!
alright everyone, start guessing his numbers
Shawn, I was devastated that you could not see that with your own eyes bro. However, Will videotaped the whole thing and I'm betting that will circulate here in the not-too-distant future.
300/330
i would have LOVED to have seen it, but to go back to the fairgrounds, it would have been another 10 dollar parking, and 10 dollar fee, and having my screaming fuel pump, i wanted to keep as much money on me as i could
id like to see a track numbah out of him sometime soon too
man I wanna see that shiznit. Just post it eric. We all love you more then nick
Still waiting :deal:
Going on what little I know, i'm gonna say it's pushing the 450hp mark give or take 50.
Man.... dyno numbers, what's next 1/4 times? Don't tease us much longer.
402.. my guess
I will not reveal the #'s, but let's just say something isn't right, he should be pumping a lot more out. Good news is this will only make him get off his ass and fix it.
Four words Nick DYNO TUNE AND CHIP :D
I've heard about the numbers, and all I can say is.. if I ever start talking a ton of shiznit about my cars, (which, fortunately, is unlikely) I just hope someone makes excuses for me too. :nutkick:
300-325
Drum roll please...............................
drumming
still drumming....
omg please don't tell me its under 375? I was thinking the h/c/i combo was worth about 290-300 rwhp and another 100 for the blower..
No response from Nick yet...so I guess it's going to be my call...
And I say, here it is:
Zing! Ouch, that low torque number HURTS! Still about 2x what my car can do, so I can't say anything bad.
Nice numbers Eric, gonna put mine on the the dyno soon also will post ASAP afterward.
Man, Mike's right, something aint right there.
With all the work done to the car it only put down that low of horsepower?!? If something aint wrong, I am giving up on my cougar right now. LOL J/K, still impressive numbers though.
Wow, I was pretty close. I am surprised the torque # was not higher though......My guess is the upper intake is holdin him back in that respect. How much boost is he runnin?
Dyno runs and dyno tunes can get expensive. I think he needs to take it to the track on a test and tune day. We all know how fast these cars run with similar h/c/i setups
he's running 6psi if i remember correctly
whats holding him back is the tune, he only has a FMU, but it did keep the a/f ratio nice and flat
if he had it dyno tuned, and had a custom chip burned, for the timing tables, and the other parameters, he should be able to put down at least 380 at the wheels
but it took how long to get it on a dyno...you think he'd put it on a dyno a few more times!?
Those are Nick's, not mine. We had to bribe him (read: pay him) to put his car on the dyno at Carlisle. Surprisingly he didn't hesitate, argue or produce an excuse at all. I'm still in a state of shock!
The numbers are great for a n/a motor. However, with a Powerdyne sitting under tha hoodie, obviously there's something not right. If you notice in the dyno graphic, the torque curve begins to drop off before 6K, but the horsepower does not--it's still climbing even at 6K. He has some ideas about what's wrong and he'll be tinkering in no time. He was grateful after it was over because he now had a baseline from which to work. Lots of questions remain though...
- Would the old intake setup have done better?
- What's the restriction now?
- Could I make tea out of the gallons of water gushing from Nick's tailpipes?
- Why is it when you drop the garden hose, it always lands on the handle and squirts you in the face? ;)
BTW, my dyno numbers are from 1999: 232 rwhp, 271 lb/ft torque. That was with 275 miles on the motor, immediately after dropping it in the car. With all the minor mods since then it will probably do 250-260 hp, with torque flirting with 300 lb/ft. If I'd had it at Carlisle I would have dynoed it again.
i put my 3.8L on the dyno, and got 14rwhp and 23 ft/lbs of torque
wow that is pretty good for a v-6. What kinda mods you runnig?
sounds like ur tc...with its custom free flowing exhaust, high performance paint and zip ties, speed tape, and ur other lil mods :P
did it take you all day to come up with that one? primer boy
that would be a negative.
primer owns u, get over it and stop being jealous. lol
i got plenty of primer...under my PAINT
sorry I left at noon and missed that...
Yea I would expect to see another 40-50 hp and ft lb of tq, so its definatly needing some tuning.
FYI.. HP and TQ figures will ALWAYS cross one another at 5250 rpm, with HP continuing to climb and TQ falling. This assumes the engine makes enough power to get to 5250 rpms.
see ur so jealous, cuz my car is so blazingly fast the paint comes off :rollin: :rollin:
thats why you only have 3 gears now, you get into overdrive, and the paint comes off
Tom, i honestly thought he'd have around 380, ive seen similar combo's go a little less or a little more, so i figured thats where he would be, im wondering if that intake is hurting him, or if its just a poor tune, the a/f plot stayed nice and flat
Ouch, the stock HO is what 250HP, and with all his mods and the powerdyne he only got an extra 63HP. Was the powerdyne belt still hooked up or slipping maybe? I know Ed had a problem with his staying on...
stock HO puts down 225 at the flywheel, ive seen em put anywhere from 170-190 at the wheels
so he at least picked up another 120 or so at the wheels over a stock HO
That reminds me one chapter of a Tv program (overhaulin“) when they build a chevy with the 350 cid. The engine was rebuild and modified. Even they add a vortech supercharger with the carburetor enclosure. I Was expecting numbers around 400 Hp at least, when i heard the engine power was 350 Hp. Yeah, its a very good number for an engine, but maybe was greater the expectation of "big engine, big numbers" the thing that i though about it. And i guess that some of here are experimenting the same. I dont know very much about performance engines, but i know that these are good and respectable numbers....or maybe only is "Desafinado". Just my two cents....

Son of a bit@#..... you mean Im not alone? Thought I was the only one that had that problem.
when i let go of the hose, it generally gets the seat wet...
You're supposed to tap the coffee straw on the rim of your coffee mug a couple times before you set it down.. :flip:
Happened to me yesterday. Washed and dried the car, washed the brush out and put the hose down... about 15-20 feet from the car. Well, not only did it land on the handle but also in the direction of the car. On top of that it stayed on until I picked it up... then it was back to dry the car off.
only a man with experience could divulge such information
But I don't have anything that small around here. :p
i'm here anyway i don't have internet on my computer for now. thats another long story..
anyway
now as for the dyno run well!!!
like i said to everyone that was there..theres no way it's only making 311HP.but i know everyone going to say i'm just making excuses for why it only made just over 300HP but i'm not just going to lie down on this one :p :yuck: :disappoin
i know something was worng one i watched three dyno runs before me and on my dyno run i herd a loud hiss from the dyno which i did'nt hear from the other dyno runs.. which leaves me to beleave that the brakes on the dyno did'nt release corectly. but even i can say that even that is if'y and just might be a fluke and or might not be true.. but!! i allso told the guy doing the dyno run when he got in the car that he had to release the E brake and told him where it was and about 10 seconds later he started the car and tryed to move the car and the car moved but slow and of corse he forgot to release it and i know he aplyed the Ebrake on the dyno so i think he forgot to release it. and the Ebrake was aplyed when i got back in the car..again but hey who knows ;)
so to solve this i'm not going to do any tuning at all. to see what the car makes and bring it to a dyno near me to a shop in sekonk MA.. to see what the motor makes. and if it is true which i doubt it.. then i got some major hunting to do why it's only making 311HP..
have a nice day everyone
Nick
Yeah I was wondering that myself how were the other cars running on the dyno.. before and after your run..
How does the car feel now compared to the way it did with the other intake combo when you came down to Philly? I drove Bill's car and yours, and they are night and day completely (sorry bill) and I think he dyno'd around 320 rwhp correct?
It is possible talking about the dyno's brake. The car before you had a 150shot of go-go juice and he said he made a lot more hp the year before. Infact, I think Nick was talking to him about it. We're all waiting for the new dyno results.
My first thought looking at the intake... you need a new elbow. There's practically no plenum on that and its really vital with FI to have a nice sized plenum and good sized runners.... While your setup, especially with the very short runners and centrifigul sc.... can make some rediculous numbers (i dont like cent. sc's cause all the power is in the top of the rpm range) You have to do everything you can to get that power build earlier... so, short runner and high rpm peak leaves you with plenum size to play with... and about the only way to do that now is to make a new elbow. Check into the shapes that the aftermarket for 4.6's is comming out with... take that and run with it. Add dynotuning and I think you'll be ok.

Short runners with a s/c is the way to go on a 5.0 motor. Long runners are the setup for n/a. While long runners do create awesome low end torque, I think that NICK is looking for big power gains. I'm also pretty sure he knows what he's doing.
Hey NICK, am I gonna have to come back there and show you how to tune that thing :rollin: :giggle:

yeah... but everyone that knows their head from their ass knows that its give and take on cars... you cant just make ultra short runners on a car with a supercharger that makes all its power up high... well, you could, but you'll need a valvetrain that can take you up to 8-9k. and its still gonna be rough getting the torque out of it... This may be a hell of a race car setup... but not for a street car.
Sorry to see your results. Could be a bug, but it's probably accurate. What ya'll have to realize is that the Powerdyne is a joke of a supercharger. It's the cheapest one you can buy, for a reason.
6lbs of boost from it, with a box style intake like that, is gonna be horrible. I think he needs to go back to a stock style intake or buy a bigger supercharger, personally.
To address the post from earlier, there's nothing wrong with the belts on these. I was running too small a pulley, and the containing grooves on my crank pulley were worn off. I've since gone back to the 9lb supercharger pulley, and an overdriven 8 rib crank pulley. So far, the drive belt is solid as a rock.
What kind of boost #'s are you showing on your gauge with that intake, Nick??
If it makes you feel any better, my 460 Crown Vic build dyno'd at 225 RWHP with 340 RWTQ, a few weeks ago. I've been inching my way towards a solution with that. I won't be happy until it's putting down at least 300/400. I expected to equal the power output of the Cougar, and it's just not gonna happen without some serious heads, or forced induction. Hmmmm..
