Title: 2.3 turbo stroker?
Post by: SR71blackbird on March 18, 2012, 08:29:35 PM
Can i use a 2.5 ranger crank shaft with Crower sportsman rods with stock pistons with a .30 bore? I want to build a stroker motor from the bottom end of the blown motor turbo coupe i have (I am parting it out).

ranger 2.5 cranks, have smaller mains, they are not as strong as 2.3's  That being said I did see an n/a 2.3l stroked to a 2.5l with an essy head and 13:1 flat top pistons that went 219.6mph at Bonneville

Holly  i would have never thought a 2.3 could go that fast N/A! that is crazy. So i am guessing there is no way for me to get any more displacement unless i get a new piston/rod combo?

before you put anymore thought into the idea, read the thread i started on NATO.. i had thought about it, for about 3.6 seconds, until i realized.. 'that's only .2L more. i can make up for that with an extra 2psi'

what really did it for me was Glenn 88TC's post about flander's (whoever he is) stroker running the same times as his stock stroke 2.3.. i usually don't believe statements like that without proof, but that's when it really hit me that it wasn't worth the migraine lol

I beg to differ. The 2.5 crank is strong enough to take some serious abuse, as are the small journal 2.3 cranks.
The 2.5 stroker is a personal choice deal. I thought enough of if to start putting my own together. Frankly, it's not much more expensive than putting together a stout 2.3 is anymore. Yes, it's only .2 litres more, but the cost really isn't all that much more. I'm using an early small journal block, factory 2.5 crank, 5.2" billet rods, and CP pistons/rings. I did get lucky on the crank though. A local 2.3 guy is putting a turbo motor in his Ranger and didn't want to buy 2.5 pistons so he's destroking to 2.3 and traded me cranks straight across.

So what can i do to beef up my bottom end but still keeping the cost down? Sportsman crower CRs, ARP bolts and stock pistons. Here are the ones im looking at.

That statement come up alot. However, most people don't look at the big picture, which is percentage of increase. Going from 2.3 to 2.5 is an increase of just over 9%, which is not a small number.
Now, if you start with a SJ block, which are common as dirt, and don't cost much at all, the only additional part you'll need over a typical "all out" 2.3 build is the crank. The cranks are not as hard to find as some people make it out. Go down to your local auto parts store and order one. The cost locally if I was to pick one up would be $237 dollars. Looking at CP pistons, stricly for comparisons sake, the price is the same for the 2.3 or the 2.5 piston.
So, what's wrong with a 9% displacement increase for $237? It just made sense to me, especially since I already had several good SJ blocks.
BTW, the V-8 guys would LOVE to get a 9% increase in cubes for a measly $237.

i'd upgrade pistons while you're at it, or at least pick up some new stock replacements (if you haven't already).. after 25 years of slipping their way up and down the cylinder, they've lost some material on the skirts

The factory EFI 2.3Turbo piston is actually a pretty stout part. IIRC, they were manufactured my Metal-Leve for Ford. I just sold my spare set of used (97,000 miles) stock pistons, and with the exception of two light scratches on one of the skirts, they looked and measured out like new. If the engine was maintained, the pistons will live a long and happy life. It's much harder to find a good standard bore block to use them in.
SR71, the rods you linked to are 5.4", and won't work in a stock 2.3, which used 5.2" rods. Crower does offer a 5.2" rod.
