I know just enough about CV shafts to barely get by, and I need to put a new one in my farm truck. It's an '88 K1500, and the pass side shaft pops and jerks and makes a hell of a racket, especially on a slow turn.

I got under the truck when I got to work, and I could turn the shaft by hand with the tire on the ground. I know if this can be done then something is broken, as there's not any way to disengage the axle from the wheel, such as a manually locking hub would enable me to do.

I know how to remove them, slide hammer, big hammer and a brass punch, some cuss words and usually a busted knuckle.

When I put engines and transmissions in Taurus and Sables in 2006, I had to remove the cv shafts to be able to separate the engine from trans...I gather it's about the same thing, only the other end will be attached to the front diff and not the transmission.

i'm not sure on the fullsize GM's, but on my sonoma (94), the housing end of the shaft bolts on with 6 (possibly 8, don't remember) allen headed bolts.. they didn't start the typical cv shaft with the snap ring until 98 i believe.. if it's the bolt-on style, you can get away with unbolting it, taking the nut off the opposite end, dropping the housing end of the axle and snaking it out.. as for it spinning freely with the tire still on the ground.. :wtf:

Should be attached to the front axle with six bolts. Been a long time since I worked on one so sold but that's how they have been for a long time...

Should be bolted on the case side, and a nut on the outside hub. You can get new ones for about $90,rebuilt even cheaper.

Picked up a brand new one, lifetime warranty for 70 and some change. Saturday will be filled with cusswords, I'm sure...lol

LOL i hope you have a strong impact gun.. they usually don't come loose with a breaker bar, even with leverage on the hub end
