Title: air pump questions
Post by: blackcat85 on March 12, 2012, 11:59:26 PM
hi
would you guys replace an air pump and the air valves on a 1984 3.8  just to do it since other things are apart now? i have never heard of anyone saying that their air pump went bad, not that it couldnt happen, im just thinking is it an expense that is worth it, like will it make the car run better or better mileage?
since its a 29 year old car i was just thinking.

i assume you're referring to the smog pump? give it a spin and see if you hear any bearing noise, grinding, etc etc.. then give the pulley a jiggle up and down, then in and out to see if it has any play.. if the bearings are still good with little to no play, you should be in good shape.. i don't believe they have any real effect on gas mileage, as it's mostly for emissions

btw, where in nj do you hail from? just curious
