Title: that surprised me, 1cu ft= 7.49gal
Post by: jcassity on March 06, 2012, 01:57:15 AM
i was designing out a 250kw generator project up in bennington vt and had to calculate the fuel consumption of this Detroit Diesel so i could tell the fuel tank maker how big.
I ended up having to flip to through my ugly's manual to figure out how many liquid gallons there are to one cubic foot.  This genset will use about 27gal/hr and it needs to be 72hr rated.

come to find 7.5liquid gal =  1 cu foot.

i would have never guessed.

Wow 27gl/hr?? that's a lot of fuel.  The last truck I drove pulling a step-deck and grossing 80k, got right around 5.5 mpg w/ 500hp Detroit 60 series turning 1750 rpm at 65mph. That figures at around 11.81 gl/hr. Is that engine a v12?? Just curious.

250kW would take a lot of energy to make. That's a quarter of a megawatt. I can power my entire house with my 6kW generator if I turn off the electric heat and use the electric range sparingly (IE one burner at a time)...

thats right,, you'll never see more than 25A in typical residential service.  we all have a lot of head room.
now in my case, that changes when that 18kva tankless water heater kicks on coupled wth all other linear and non linear loads.
