Title: Sporting new wheels
Post by: 50tbrd88 on February 25, 2012, 04:59:17 PM
Got the chrome 93 Cobras mounted today.  I think they look a little more period correct than the old Cobra R's.  The offset must be a little different because they don't stick out nearly as far as the old wheels (plus they are 1/2" narrower).

Anyway here is what it looks like now:

Right after I got back from the tire shop I installed the new police fan clutch and HO fan.  I gotta say these new wheels look very much like a fan!  I can see why people call them "fan blades".

They look good on there! I wonder if the Turbo Coupe centers would fit. That way you could have the Bird emblem on them. Of course they'd need polished or chromed to match the wheels better.

Thanks man.

The guy at the tire shop told me he thought I had found original NOS T-bird center caps, lol.  It would be cool to have the 'bird emblem embossed on there somehow.

I'm excited to put the Cobra R's on mine. It's the first time to put different wheels on it since 1992! It's really going to change the look of it. I just wish the were chrome.

I here ya.  I ran stock wheels until '04 when I got my Cobra's.  I really like the Cobras but was ready for a change and was hoping maybe they had something to do with my vibration issue.

I did like how the silver wheels looked on my car.  They matched my silver pinstripe perfectly.  These new 93 Cobras are a nice change though.  I've always wanted a set of chrome wheels.

That's one of the things I like about the wheels I've had on it all these years. I could polish them to look like chrome. It's going to be different that's for sure.

nice!! i always wondered what a fox bird would look like with polished MN-12 wheels (or 4 lug version, cobra wheels, like you have)

93 cobra had a different rear and front wheel hubs.  Aftermarket 93 cobra replica wheels can be purchased with either standard fox offset or 93 Cobra specific.

These are supposed to be standard offset.

Nice! Those wheels were originally designed to act like a fan at high speeds to help cool the brakes.

MN12 wheels have the Ford FWD bolt/offset....would take a lot of needless work to mount them...IMO, none are "cool" enough looking to warrant doing the work needed.

I did have Lincoln Continental wheels on my ex-wife's '89 'Bird...they were a mesh type wheel. Looked alright..better than the stock steel jobs.
Also, Taurus/Sable wheels will bolt to an MN12..

Looks sweet.

I always liked the look of that wheel.  I run the cobra r.  17 x 9  silver.  Its a good look for my xr7.

Those are sweet! They look just like fan blades... I think they are probably the same design just a different lug/offset pattern for the mn12's

Thanks man.  I think they look like they belong on the T-bird a little more than the R's did.

No its still there!  Argh.

I mentioned it in another thread, but I noticed tonight a chattering sound from the rear of the car when starting to move forward.  I have also noticed there is a pretty loud "clunk" when going over bumps, etc and I used to hear a clunk when I had the AOD and would go into reverse.

I'm wondering if its all interconnected.  I've always attributed the noise to the poly bushings in the CHE control arms.  Now I am contemplating going back 100% stock with Moog TC-spec springs I have laying around to see if it helps.

Here is a side profile pic a took tonight.  I do like the fact that the wheels are set in more than the Cobra R's (especially in the front).  I may look into some spacers to bring the rears out a tad.

Overall I'm really digging the new look though.
