Title: 2012/13 winter race car
Post by: fordguy545 on February 10, 2012, 07:11:08 PM
Picked this up last saturday. Its an 86 cougar xr7 with a 2.3T and auto trans. Needed a turbo and needed put back together. Runs decent at this point, but it needs a good going through in other places. Interior is kinda lousy(red of course) but I can rob most of the interior out of the bird we got the same day which is faded black. I will probably give it a cheap/quickie paint job. Its got some rust spots that will need addressed, but its not too bad overall, except for the compression fittings I found on brake lines and a leaking compression fitting for the trans cooler lines.

Hey....red interiors are cool : )

That should be a nice project. Ill try to find an issue but a guy in Hot Rod magazine had the same engine just in a stang, and managed to pull bumper sing (Literaly) wheel stands past the 60 foot mark. And he drives it to work everyday. He said his secret was basicly a big turbo and one hell of a bottom end. Sweeet engines. Best of luck!

Thats right, RED INTERIOR! Every time im in it, its exactly like scarface sitting in his RED INTERIOR mansion. True story, scarfaces mansion was built off the t birds interior....no lie      SAY HELLO TO MY LITTLE FREIND!!!! ;)

If the interior was any color but red, I would only have to change the seats, but red just does not belong in a car.  As for the trans, I guess I will have to drive it a while to decide.  I'd have to find another t5 somewhere if I was going to change it.  Being a C3 trans, these arent good for much of anything

if you can find 3 more, they make excellent legs for a glass table ;)

nice find and i agree, red does NOT belong in an interior

At this point, I have almost the entire interior out. Getting rid of the red interior for the raven/black-gray out of the tbird we picked up with this car. That tbird is rusty though. I will have to find some paint to match the gray of the other interior since a couple plastic peices will not interchange since mercury forgot to finish the roof, lol. One thing I have noticed working on this, and in some for sale adds, since starting on this car is that stuff says ford on the interior sill plates and such instead of mercury. It does suck having to pull the dash to change the carpet so it will get a new heater core while I'm at it.

When the c3 gives up the ghost, it will most likely be replaced by a t5

I actually bought both of bhazards cars.  The interior out of the red one in the banner is going in this since its pretty rusty but the interior isnt bad.

The dash is just laying in there now and no wiring is hooked up anymore, and the carpet is now out(battery on camera died) and that carpet is just rediculously heavy.  I did find the build sheet under the rear seat taped to the quarter panel.  I also realized I probably should have torn the other car apart first to get the carpet out, lol.  Oh well, I had to practice on one right?  I found a duplicolor vinyl and fabric paint that matches almost exactly to the raven interior and it turns out to be flat black.  The charcoal gray wasnt even close.  I also got all the headliner fabric off the cardboard backer(why arent sunroof cars cardboard too?) and the red fabric off the rear deck fiberglass stuff.  I already ordered an amp for the stereo, now I just have to find some good speakers to handle 75w rms x4 for the highs(jl audio 300/4 to match the 1000/1 I already have for subs in my SC that will be getting sold-16mpg is irritating me)
Anybody know how good the summit racing paints are?  They seem pretty cheap so I don't know if they will last.  I don't want a fortune in painting this thing.

I should be the one calling you a douche after finding all your half assed repairs and mods!  Why'd you have to cut the black carpet down the middle so you could take the sound deadener off.  AND I sure as heck hope you weren't the one who put compression fittings in the brake lines!

I don't even know what a compression fitting is..sounds like they're not something to trust on a brake line tho, lol.

Off to google now...and i can't recall who had that Cougar either....was it blackNredCougar, or someone like that? Seems his name was Rick?

Edit: holy shiznit...someone put THOSE on a brake line!!??? :beatyoass:

yep.  There were two of them on the brake line going to the rear, so at least they weren't on the front.  And amazingly, the parking brakes almost work right, at least till I put the rear end in out of the tc.  Also the compression fitting on one of the tranny cooler lines leaks too.  Going to have to change part of that line at least because there is no room between it, and the nut holding the line to the transmission port, lol.  I'll have some pics tonight of my progress on this thing though.

Now that I know what they are called...we have those on a lot of our air lines at my work....always blowing off, or breaking. Nothing quite like getting whipped by a small air hose because the POS fitting blew the hose out....but, they are easy to fix lol.

Anyways - freshly cleaned and painted turbocoupe seats, and I even took the one base off the festiva base bhazard put it on and got it all working right again!

As for the exterior, I havent made up my mind between Solid black, or a Black pearl  using the summit single stage paints.  They are the same price.  Thoughts?

What paints are you using? and for the seats too? Would like to change my interior to black instead of dirty tan. The black with grey looks really good though.

I'm using Duplicolor Vinyl and Fabric paint.  I got it at Oreillys and Meijer.  The gray is just the factory raven centers.  I painted them because they were badly faded to blue.  The red that was in the car was all torn up leather.

I dont remember, but he was from Ada, OH. Down near Lima. Im not even sure if he did the work on it. But I'm guessing whoever clamped the vac line going to the wastegate to 'remedy' a boost leak (thus overspinning the turbo to death) probably also did the brake lines.

I think this is why its rusty where it is

All that water collected in the fiberglass sound deadener and just sat there.  Did that on both sides.

Havent worked on this car for a while, and have had parts scattered around in the shop so I decided I have to get this car painted and put back together for the most part before I can tear into my autox car again.  Heres the car with all the flaking clearcoat sanded off, but it has been getting smoothed out for the past week and slowly but surely, it will be painted soon I hope!

Well, finally ready for topcoat.  Cars nice and straight finally.  I cant wait!  BTW, we have 2 paint booths at our shop, this is the smaller of the 2, but has better lighting.  We paint propane delivery trucks and transports and those require a large paint booth to get them in, lol.

All that I have left is getting the grille painted and put on, fixing a brake line, and tranny cooler line, exhaust, front turn signals, foglights, and then plates and insurance.  Getting excited!  I will finally get to drive this thing on the road since I havent yet, lol

Thinking it needs my Draglites put on it though!

Ok, this car is going to be done 3 days later than I was hoping. Tomorrow I need to paint the side trim and put it on on sunday. I did finally get to drive it tonite, and its actually not that sluggish. Its definately not making a whole lot of power, but its not bad. 2nd goes to 75, dont remember where it gets out of first. It feels really weird not shifting while driving, lol.  I do know now that if I fill the fuel tank all the way up, it starts pouring out the top, so something is wrong there, hoping just a dryrotted evap line. I do have a new tank if its something else.

Been awhile since I checked this out...man, that turned out nice. I wish I had a paint booth and the skills. And time. And patience. And money...and..and..

Great work...keep the pics and progress coming.

Got the false trunk floor finished, except for the carpet.  That will wait until after I get my autox car ready for the season.  I also got the side trim painted so that will get put on tomorrow.

This has full boston accoustics pro series 6 1/2" components, 3 1/2" coaxle's in the dash powered off the head unit, 12 year old pioneer subs, Kenwood DVD, JL audio 1000.1 and 300.4 amps.  Unfortunately I'm having trouble keeping the 1000.1 from shutting off.  Havent figured out whats wrong with that yet, but I know its not voltage since I put on a 200A 1 wire alternator.  I know I heard something rattle inside that amp when I picked it up, so I will take it apart when I take all this apart to carpet it.

What's the dimensions on the sub enclosure....I'd like to make something for my 'Bird when I get to that point. I like how clean and tucked yours is...still getting access to the spare is a major plus, too.

Well, finally got the side trim on today after a whole bunch of time getting the paint dried.  Don't know why it was such a problem, maybe it was too cold in the shop.  Did take it on its first round trip to toledo, OH and back(90 miles) and no problems other than the front end alignment must be off(kinda wanders), and I think it needs a new power steering pump.  Seems really stiff to turn.  All my other cars turn pretty easy, this one is 2-3 times the effort.

ThunderbirdSport302, I will have to find my drawing I made to get the dimensions because I don't remember right off hand.  I know the front of it is 60*, the angle of the back seat.  I remember its 34 1/4" wide, 12" tall, but dont remember how deep
