I know. Just after I converted it to a V8, but I've been wanting one of these for a couple of years and finally found one when I had the money. I've agreed with the seller to let him keep motor, trans, and front brakes(as if they're worth anything). Hopefully the mustang will be sold tomorrow.

Plans?
5.0L explorer motor (picking up tomorrow)
Convert to 5-lug with Mark 7 fronts and ranger axles/drums out back
AOD
Dual 2.5" exhaust
Find a good factory cassette player radio
Not sure of wheel selection yet
Man that is sweet.....its so early 80's I could cry.
Also the 4r70w with controller would be a sweet swap. AOD's can be a pain.
I want an 85 or 86 LTD....just because.
Travis
I actually have an AODE in the garage, but that controller is $400.
So . . . . . gotta ask . . . . . why have you been wanting one of these?
I'm not judging or nothin', we all have our own interesting preferences. Me, if I ever stumbled across a nice Mercury Montego for sale I'd be tempted to jump on it (my first car was a '73 4-door inherited from my grandmother).
So what is it with you and the Fairmont?
It's a 4dr fox body and I have 4 kids.
I'm trying to score a straight six version of the same thing :)
Cool :).
I haven't even seen a Fairmont in years. Most of them rusted away years ago...
That's cool, I've kept my eye out for one of those over time, but every one I see for sale is a 200 6. The 302 cars are harder to find because they only made them 2 years.
I want one. My freind put exhaust on a fairmont, It had a HO and a T-5. Every since I seen it I've wanted one.
Picked this up(well spent nearly 4hrs to pull it) today for $300. 139,000 miles and ran good.
Let's do the math!
Exploder 5.0 + 'Mont = a metric shiznit-ton of fun!
I love math! lol
Nice score....both of 'em :D
Can't wait to see what comes of this. A 5.0 Fairmont is one of wish list cars.
Jim said he has been super happy with this swap. Yeah the controller is $400 but you can bolt it up a used $400 tranny and have complete control. How are you going to control the exploder 5.0?
Travis
Return style fuel injection with a fox mustang wiring harness and computer.
Took the the family to church in today. It actually fit 6 people. Me, wife, twin 2yr old girls, 6yr and 13yr old boys.
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=EF8GhC-T_Mo :D
That's sick though. Paint is the icing on the cake, and congrats on the motor score.
Lucky! I'm a sucker for a fox in that color combo. Nice car.
I don't know what that was, but I want the last 3min of my life back. Thanks all for the compliments.
:burnout:
My sincerest apology. Really. Im sorry, I thought you'd find it funny. I pissed myself watching it and upon showing it to them, now my friend his dad and I start immitating that guy everytime someone says "...look at..." in any context LOL. Different strokes!
You can't beat that combo. Downside is the 200 though has never been great for fuel economy, though.
There was a minter on CL in Indiana for $1000
Ha! I just found it more annoying then funny.
Sleeper!!!
I love it. Wish you could find one like that around here.
I picked up an AOD, x-member, 11" brake spindles, mustang alum valve covers, fuel rail, and O2 sensor harness last night. Actually on my way now to get a mass air computer harness and A9L.
I'm going to put the 5-lug crown Vic rotors and calipers on it, but undecided on wheels. What do you'd recommend? I don't want anything "flashy". IE cobras, FR500, etc. And no "drag" setup. I kinda like the starion/conquest wheels. But those are 4-lug.
Maybe turbines from a GM/Vic/Towncar? SVO wheels are bright and polished but the design is simple. The S197 mustang V6 wheels are pretty sharp too, someone on grandmarq.net has em on a 2 door Vic and it looks sharp. Also the last two generations of Explorers have had a pretty good variety of wheels that aren't boring but aren't gaudy either.
So tempted to put some early P71 16" wheels on this thing.
Some of the crown vics had that honeycomb-mesh style like the ARE ones that fit thundercats/4 lug. I always see 'em and it makes me think the car ought to be the Ford version of the Marauder or something lol. I think GMs might have worn them as well?
The 96-02 HPP crown vic/marquis wheels would be fine....close to the 90-92 mark 7 wheel....that would look sweet IMHO.
Travis
meanwhile... in Australia
(http://www.automotobookshop.com.au/images/b591_Falcon_Fairmont_1979_1982.jpg)
hahaha
Im thinking the black steel ones.
I guess I'm not into Fairmonts as much as y'all are, but there is no denying it would look boss with those black and silvers on it.
That pic is from a guy in CL. I met up with him today and he wouldn't budge off of $200 for them. So, I passed. Those wheels were available on different models. I think I can find a set closer to $100.
The size difference between that and say an 87 Grand Marquis is totally different right. Like, the Fairmont is a fox and i believe the Marquis is full frame?
I think they were ALL foxbody's back then. LOL!
Got some front brake parts yesterday and had the rotors turned. 11" spindles, Crown Vic rotors and calipers.
I think the P71 wheels with white wall trimmed tires would look good. Imo
Yea the Fairmont is a fox, and the Grand Marquis is a panther with the full frame. The Marquis was a fox, however. :hick:
The LTD could be either a fox or panther so I call the fox LTD the "Little" LTD, and everyone seems to know which one I'm talking about then.
Bah. I was considering a nice and clean Grand Marquis. Still am, I just wanted the smaller car. This one is pretty darn clean and cheep to boot.
http://worcester.craigslist.org/ctd/2790900917.html
What year is it?
87. I included a CL add in the previous post.
Didn't see that. I picked mine up for $800. :-D
Nice. Something this clean and old can be pretty rare up this way.
That P71 wheel you showed in the picture is for the 2003-2012 P71/CV/GM. Same bolt pattern but different offset. Its much closer to the 2005 and up Mustangs. You would want wheels for the 2002 and older.
My wife has a 2001 CV HPP. Its a really nice car.
Travis
Are you sure? BS measured at 4-1/2". Mustang 4-lug pony wheels are 4.80".
Up, up, and away!
Bye bye, 125hp motor

A quick hose down

Awesome!
Cam swap time!
Got hung up on changing valve springs. Bought a used TFS stage 1 cam and the seller included some springs off his twisted wedge heads. They would work, but I'd need to pull the heads, have them machined, and buy aftermarket retainers. So, I opted out of that idea and will order the TFS upgrade kit on Friday.
In the meantime, I did a little cleaning and painting:
I got a 2.5" MAC pro dump for a $100. Had about 10min of run time. I'll need to extend the flow tubes, and I'll ditch the dumps for full tailpipes.
This is gonna be one cool Fairmont haha.
Valve springs were ordered yesterday and will be here Tuesday. I did get a set of P71 wheels with center caps today at a junkyard today. :headbang: I bought a set of V6 wheels last week for $100 only because they had good 225/55 tires on them. I'm now trying to sell those to recoup some of the money I've been spending lately. I'm hoping to have this thing running by the end of next week.
I'll get more pics tomorrow evening. I want to clean the wheels up and repaint them.
Oh, and my wife did an awesome job at cleaning the intake plaque up!
Cleaned up ie hosed off and sanded junkyard writing off. Will scuff and reprint later today.
Wheels turned out pretty good!
I also mounted the remote TFI
(http://i220.photobucket.com/albums/dd188/32vfoxbird/P1010072-1.jpg)
Nice job, I would've gone body color on the wheels though. I've always liked red cars with red steel wheels and dog dishes.
Looking good :).
No paint for the lower intake?
Hey Fairmont Guy
Im not positive on the wheels. Just all the http://www.crownvic.net guys say there is something different between the 02-03 models. Ford widen the front end when they went to struts and ford also change the rear end because of the Mercury Marauder. The bolt pattern is the same, just a bit different offset. Hope Im wrong. Those wheels look super clean.
Travis
They are different, but he has the 98-02 wheels. 2003+ wheels have a fwd offset.
Nice Fairmont man... my first car was a 79 Fairmont Futura with a 302... I still love those cars. Good work bro!
I looked at a 4d Fairmont last fall...200 I6, 50K miles, ARE wheels and new tires. It was a cold morning.....that thing fired right up and sounded great! Interior was awesome! He asked $1300 for it....should have dickered and grabbed it.
Anybody else impressed with how fast this guy works? I mean Jeez, if this was my thread, it would have been months between updates... He's bustin' it out in days if not hours...
:roxor:
When you are ripped on blow it's amazing how fast you can work! ;)
And still have money to buy parts?
Haha! I'm a pen 15ehead because I work fast? I need to get the car done ASAP. Me and my wife have only one car right now and it's a PITA taking her and picking her up from work. It would be driving now had I not opted to change the cam and convert to 5-lug brakes, though.
I like the looks of those cop car wheels. Keep the updates coming, this is going to be a neat cruiser when finished.
I missed this. No. Too much red as it is. I would paint the upper in aluminum, but have too much time in the intake plaque now. LOL!
Will be a cool little ride....the EFI swap would take me a year!!
I honestly haven't looked into wiring it yet.
Glad the P71 wheels worked out for you....looks sweet.
Travis
Wiring EEC4 isnt bad. You only use 40 wires or so.
Got the motor and trans in. Hopefully I have enough weight in the car to get the struts bolted back up. LOL!
Getting the motor/trans in and modding the trans x-member was about all I got done today due to rain. Hoping to hit the ground running tomorrow.
Some new headers showed up today.
Ford racing stainless for "P" heads. After getting them in I see the column shift linkage is going to need some re-engineering or I need to find a floor shifter. I'm not even sure if a tbird/cougar linkage would work.
The other day I modified the gauge cluster with a mech water temp gauge. It fit perfectly where the factory buttstuffog clock was! I also added a mech oil pressure gauge on the bezel.
Nice work on the cluster. If you need to get a floor shifter, you're easiest find would be a '79-86 Mustang with a 4 or V6. Those all had C3s or C5s so it would be PRND21.
If the top stud on the passenger side ishiznitting the linkage just replace it with a bolt and nut. I have the same headers on my T-bird (column shifter) and that's what I did. It worked like a charm.
Yea, the stud ishiznitting. I'll give that a try. Thanks!
Productive day, but not productive enough. Lots to do tomorrow. I got all new fuel lines ran. I used a 6an push-lok hose from the rails to a bulkhead behind the pass strut tower. From there I used 3/8" aluminum line. One to the tank. One to a 40 micron filter. Currently using a frame-mounted 85 Bronco fuel pump. I drained the gas tank and drilled a hole for a return fitting a put a nut on the back side with a nylon washer.molested
Made a couple of trips to Lowes, O'reilly's, and Auto Zone. I did get the 5-lug axles and drums swapped out and the rear wheels.molested
Tomorrow is wiring and hopefully getting the struts bolted back up. I EXPECT the car to run tomorrow.molested
Lovin' it so far. Only thing I'd do different would be a black faced oil gauge in the cluster.
What accessories will you use?
I will try to use all of them. AC and power steering hoses will need to be custom though.
That'll be sweet goin down the road with a rumble. A+
Got the struts bolted up and started putting the brakes on. I screwed up and bought the wrong rotors. Heading to pick-a-part now for Mark 7 rotors.
The console from the 84-85 fox ltd lx would almost a perfect fit I suppose.
Good luck finding one.
Travis
Still can't get this thing to start. I'm almost positive I have it wired correctly. TFI and PIP tested good. I've triple checked the timing, but I get no spark.
Coil?
New coil and PIP.
PIP is now showing 0.4v. Even the new one. I don't know what happened. A few hours earlier it was ranging between 3.85 and 4.5v?? I put in a 4cyl computer for shiznits n' grins and it still shows the same voltage. I've looked at countless schematics and read several articles. Battery voltage is 11.5v and I've got grounds connected everywhere. WTF??
It runs as of 11:30am. I've been finishing up some things since then. Still have more to do tomorrow.
My new ler showed up and it's HUGE. 3" Magnaflow. Overall length is 24"!! I could probably fit one of my 2yr olds in it. Sending it back to Summit and getting a refund. Local ler will be doing a full custom exhaust as soon as I finish up what I need to.
Cool, so why wasn't it getting spark?
TFI module. Even though I tested it, somehow it was sending a bad tach signal. I had a 2.3L TFI module laying around an swapped it in. Fired right up!
Pics in its current state:

Nice! Good thinking on the remote TFI...I'll be doing that soon on my 'Bird.
Looks good...any plans for a idle/rev vid? :D
Yes! After I get back from the ler shop.
that ler looks like it is for a school bus.
Haha! That was from Summit. I called them and told them I needed a 3" offset/offset straight-through ler. That's what they sent. Bitches!
Now....that is a sweet setup you have there....you will have to get us a grand total if you want...
Travis
You move fast. Looks good!
Back on the ground and made its maiden voyage around the block. Ran like a champ. Runs a little rich due to not having O2's right now though. Trying to track a ler shop down to get exhaust for it. Going to be 2.5" y-pipe into single 3".
Gonna be one hell of a street sleeper.
Love it man!
Do you plan on painting it a different color?
No. Why?
I like it. I think the wheels look good on it too.
That is the ler I run on my turboranger. Its great!
Almost looks like a cop car...if it was white or black, it would totally pull the look off.
In other words...., that's sweet.
Why not duals.
Just didn't feel like re-routing the brake line on the passenger side and it's different.
Having some real fun now.
And swapped valve body for a good one my friend had cleaned up.
Don't rag on me too bad about the modified trans crossmember. LOL!
Are those cars AODs or ???
Nope, they came with a C4.
Well I screwed up on installing the valve body. Pretty sure I didn't get the manual valve lined up and now have neutral in every "gear". So I'll be dropping the pan again in the morning. Ugh
5 speed swap time? lol
DOH.....reminds me of when I slapped mine in and the gasket shifted maybe 1/16" and it wouldn't go out of first. Actually I think it would go for 2nd and just freewheel. :giggle:
Is it modified at all with a shift kit? If not, you should definitely amp it up just a little anyway while it's apart!
No 5-speed for me. This is a daily driver family car. Maybe if it was a weekend car. I would have bought a 2-door for that.
I dont know what was done to the valve body. Later on I plan to get another trans to rebuild and add a mild stall converter to.
Just curious. I think it would look cool in white, but it would also look a little too much like a cop car.
Yea. White would be too much and I don't want to paint the jambs, engine bay, trunk, etc.
New(er) valve body seems to work good. Getting exhaust done in the morning.
Trans only has Reverse, 2nd and 3rd. So....junk. Going with a 4R70w now and the transgo manual valve body kit.
Anyways, here's an idle vid:
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=CEt4HcNf78M
Sounds awesome...what a sleeper. This would be so fun to drive around and pick on Camaro's with.
If you are inclined there are people getting the 94-95 5.0 computer to control the new 4r70.
Mite be better than the manual vb.
Travis
Sounds great! A 4r70w with a manual vb, you must really wanna stay auto haha.
Yes, I do. I'd rather have the Baumannator but that's $540 with the "universal" wiring harness.
Here's a better pic of the exhaust:
Nice trailer hitch!
Isn't it?
Considering the age of the car....pretty clean under there....
Travis
We need some burnout vids when you get a chance. Thanks! lol...
I don't know about that. This will be a daily driver AND our family's only vehicle.
I did get the old AOD out, and the fluid was naaaassty! Like a dark purple color with metallic flakes. The smell was horrendous.
Double post
And that was only about 50miles of use!
Right.....hmm!
Did you drive the car 150mph?
Travis
I got the trans used and had no idea of condition. I put new fluid in it and changed the valve body. Highest I think I got it was 80mph.
I have a good one on the garage. If you were closer.............
That was the AOD. Not the 4R70W. I just got the 4R70W in today. Hopefully firing it back up tomorrow.
Good luck!
This trans and controller is awesome! Shifts great, but when I put my boot into it, it hits the rev limiter. Need to get ahold of a laptop to fix that. It comes with a basic configuration. I don't even know what RPM it shifts at since I don't have a tach. Controller shows speed, trans temp, and battery voltage, too.
Still havent got ahold of that bezel. Soon as I do Ill shoot ya some pics.
So did you go with the baumann unit?
Yes
Running good. Going back to the ler shop tomorrow to patch my exhaust since I had to cut it to get the trans out. Also they welded in O2 bungs but the plugs they screwed n won't come out do I can thread my sensors in. I'll have them fix that too.
I also swapped the rear springs from a fox cougar and it sits about level now.

I'm jealous....of your green-assed yard! lol (and the car...looks great :))
What shifter did you go with? 96-04 mustang?
Travis
Nope. Im still working on keeping the column shifter.
But for the meantime, I have a March alternator tensioner arm as a shifter. LOL.
WTF!!??? Lmao did you seriously cut a hole in the floor right there to attach that?
Sure did. It's only a 1-3/4" hole and the carpet is getting replaced anyways. Only temporary until I figured out the column linkages.
I wonder if the Panther stuff would work? Lots of column shift cop cars...
Travis
I have no idea. That's something to look into.
Hey....I did that with a Ranger one time. Connected a rod directly tothe shift bar on the side of the tranny......had to feel the clicks to know what gear you were in!
Haha! Whatever works.
MacGuyver.....
Picked up an 8.8" the other day and decided I would swap out the carrier and gears. This particular rear had 3.27 gears. Felt pretty tight, too.
I've got 3.55's and a 4-clutch packed carrier to go back in.

And a comparison:
Paint definitely has plenty of life left in it! Cool!
I found two clogged injectors and replaced them with some good ones. I only changed the two and probably should have checked the others as well as flush out the fuel rail and FPR. I did all this in about 15min in the pits at Fun Ford today. It ran much better after that, but noticed on the way home it was still popping through the intake (or exhaust?) Not as bad as before though.
I did get to run the car for True Street and best pass was 15.025 @ 92.86mph 2.292 60'. Car weighed 3375lbs with me in it. I'm actually pretty happy about it considering it's a grocery getter. LOL! I put the thing in drive then put my boot into it. It will improve after getting some sticky tires and 8.8" w/ 3.55 gears.
Overall me and my son had fun. We met a few people and just really had a good time. I got quite a few compliments on the car, too. I'll say this....it was the fastest Fairmont there. ;-)
That's awsome! I'm glad you and your son are enjoying it. I'm sure he'll remember it forever.
Congrats....Track doesn't open here for a couple more weeks.
Travis
Thanks! Still have trash in injectors, fuel rail, or FPR. My friend's shop has an injector service, so I will be taking it over there in the morning.
I did get the column shift 75% working. LOL! I can get P, R, N, and D. My linkages max out at "D". I think I might be able to make the "lower" bracket longer to get full range. Here's a quick sketch of how it is connected now:
And clears the 2.5" exhaust and O2 sensor by about 1-1/2", too.
Best MacGuyvering I have seen in a long time. :)
Travis
Maybe a shorter "gear selector arm" would reduce the throw needed enough to bring it back within the limitations of the linkage.
I'd check the fuel system. With 340lbs more weight, skinnier tires, and a smaller cam my T-bird will do consistent 14.6@95 et in the quarter. It does cut a 2.2 60' spinning off the line.
Sort out the fuel system, get a good set of tires, and you've got yourself a low 14/high 13 daily driver :).
You also have a smaller converter and 3.73's, too. I would be in the 12's with that and sticky tires.
And BTW, I had the injectors serviced today. My friend's transmission shop offer that service. I only had to pay for the cleaner and it was $20! Score! Runs a ton better and haven't had one pop yet.
Having the injectors cleaned out must have fixed it. Haven't had one issue since. I should be picking up my stock tank that I had a shop build a custom sump for today. I miss having a working fuel gauge. Currently using a 16gal fuel cell.
Oh, and the hood flew up on me yesterday and mangled the cowl area. Pics when I get them uploaded.
I got the tank back today. Kind of disappointed that it's not EXACTLY what I wanted, but it's better than what I had before. My only issue is that the sump is still a tad higher than the bottom of the tank. I did pour in 1gal of gas and the motor started up. So I guess it will suffice. Hopefully this one doesn't give me any problems.

The shiny thing you see by the fittings is a round magnet I keep on there to catch any metal particles for extra protection.

Love the underhood portion. Bummer about the hood/cowl.
Just wondering but does the A/C work on the car?
No. It will eventually. Hasn't been too much of a priority right now.

Did you swap engines again?
Travis
Yes. Downgraded to a stock 95 gt motor with an E303 cam. I got this and $500 for my motor.
Looking good, I had the same thing happen to my cowl many years ago, nothing a body hammer and some bondo cant fix, lol. That interior sure looks clean, you practically stole that car for what you paid
My mom's next-door neighbor briefly owed one pretty identical to this one about 5 or 6 years ago. Any history of it having been registered to anyone in Baytown?
Not that I know of.
Heater/Evap core replacement time! I picked up 94/95 AC hoses, evap core, and fox condenser recently to get the AC working in this thing. The hoses will take a little modifying, but not too bad.

You really keep busy! And you work fast too! lol!

Nice job!
That is cool! (pun intended)
Awesome work !!! And as stated above, you DO work fast. I had my a/c recharged last fall when I swapped my heater core, but haven't tried it since. I think it's time before the weather turns to fire again this summer.
Thanks! First time I built a car with working AC. Haha! Tint is next, then dynomat or something like it.
I dunno if I passed it or not but did you ever get your shift linkage stuff sorted out?
Kind of. I can put it in P, R, N, and OD. Linkage bottoms out after that. So I basically can't shift the forward gears manually. Not a big deal. I just put it in D and drive it.
good deal!
This morning taking my wife to work:

I'm currently at the tint shop getting the back window tinted.
Decided I would tint the windows and start painting the aluminum trim black. I took the car to a shop to do the back glass and the small quarter windows. I then went to Oreilly's and got some 20% tint, adhesion promoter, and trim black paint. Today I got the drip rails, mirrors, and the piece under the mirrors painted, plus tinted the doors. The body moldings will eventually be painted, too. Right now I'm undecided if I want to paint the door window frames black too, as the red looks off to me.

Def paint the door frames black! that would look sweet
Yep, the door frames definitely need to be black.
I agree the would look black. That's how my Fusion is and I really like it. At least the centers that is.
Count my vote for the black door frames as well.
Man, that thing looks mean...keep them pics comin! :)
Paint em black, it will give it the LTD LX feel.

+1 Looking great!
Black it is then! I'll pick up a couple more cans today.
That was a PITA, and I've only got one side done. I had to pull the dashpad, A and B pillar trim along with the door seals. I didn't want any red showing. Looks like shag though! Also did the door handles.

That looks good!
Thanks! Body moldings are next when I get a deep 3/8" socket to take them off.
That is so badass....I don't know whether it would improve even more by painting the molding black, or leaving it as is...the chrome kinda breaks up the red, but not to the point of being overly flashy and gaudy...
Of course, I do tend to favor the so-called "Euro" paint scheme anyway...
Here's what it looks sans body moldings:

If there wasn't so many holes, I'd just keep them off but I'll just paint them black.
I likey!
Looks great blacked out!
Oh man. I like it WITHOUT the body moldings! The blacked out windows and frames are great.
Leave the moldings off and paint the bumpers black.
Too many holes to fill to leave the moldings off. I may paint the bumpers. If it looks funky I can just strip it off.
Keeping the door moldings on and filling the rest of the holes. I'll replace the fenders if I can find them from a molding delete car.

Did you have to modify the case or cowl for the SN95 evap core? Was thinking custom hoses for my project, but with the newer core I might be able to use the factory 03 mustang hoses.
Nope. It was a direct swap, other than the foam seal at the firewall.
Looks bad ass with the black door frames!
buddy of mine has a '79 parts car up here, he also has a '79 mustang, '85 bird, '85 cougar and a marquis (fox). Long way to drive for parts though.
Yes, it would be.
Bolt on a 4 eyed Mustang front end. THAT would be cool.
Looks awesome without the moldings!
Washed and buffed:

Somneone did that a few years ago..it was in one of the magazines..may have been MM&FF...the car was black, IIRC. The guy even swapped in the dash too..
It was an LTD with a 87-93 GT front end and black pony's.
And no it would not be cool. Looks ridiculous.
Ive seen a wagon with the mustang front clip. :barf:
The Futura looks pretty hawt with a LTD clip

I can't find the futuras appealing due to those funky quarter windows. I've never been a fan of headlight covers, either.
Wow......just spotted one of those down the road the other day. NEver paid much attention but recognize the quarter window. That thing rocks!! I'd totally hit that!!!
I dunno why some of these pictures remind me of this legendary scene (http://"https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=AI-VY5cC2jk")!
