Grille is gonna be matte black to match the window trim and moulding inlay.  Scored a new set of clean scoops a while back.....Still on the fence as to whether go body color or matte black on those....

I matched the rest of the trim with my grille too. best decision ever.. I'll wait until you paint your scoops matte black first. lol ... I don't think I'm going to like it, and mine are already painted to match the car. Would really hate to have to repaint them again if I didn't like it..

The scoops should match the paint. Otherwise, they look like they were taken from a hood of a different color.

Post by: daminc on January 23, 2012, 08:49:02 AM
Vinnie, that's kinda how I feel too. I'm afraid to paint over my already painted scoops. If I had another set I would. I actually got another grille to paint, seeing mine was almost still in perfect condition. I can still go back and swap to chrome everything if I choose..

Frank (a close friend and the guy who's actually doing the paintwork) is against the idea of matte black for the scoops as well.... I DO have 2 sets of scoops.  Maybe do one in body color and the other matte black and see which ones work....
Title: Rebirth
Post by: EricCoolCats on January 23, 2012, 10:45:44 AM
I could see gloss black hood scoops with just the bottom, flat parts painted in matte black.
Of course, I could also see just the center section of the hood in matte black, scoops included, just like Mustangs and old-school muscle cars. Would match the grille, carrying the theme up the hood. Makes a subtle statement but it's definitely different.

But hey, that's just me. :)

Post by: 50tbrd88 on January 23, 2012, 01:09:53 PM
I'm w/Eric on the center section of the hood being flat black.  That would give it an almost "retro" look.

Who makes the hardened input shaft you have?
Title: Rebirth
Post by: V8Demon on January 24, 2012, 11:38:47 AM
Don't rightly know.....Was in there when I bought the car.  It's one of the few things in the drivetrain I've left alone.  Tranny had 98 miles on it when I bought the car.  The transmission case is an '89 with the updated tailshaft with the 8 tooth gear.  I have the paperwork somewhere.  It was listed on there.  There are a few companies that still carry them.  Average price is about $150.

BTW -- This car is actually an LS with preferred equipment package 163a from the factory.  THis car left the factory with just about every option imagineable including the 10 inch rear drums.  Funny thing is that it is a consolette car and was sold with the 14 inch wire wheels.....
Title: Rebirth
Post by: ZondaC12 on January 24, 2012, 12:07:03 PM
Yeah I was snoopin around...one or two posts on clickclickracing talk about spline fitment issues with converters...sonnax splines are *supposedly* to blame, differing countries of manufacture of the shafts too I guess. Naturally, I'll just check it with the converter and if no good, send it back!

Interesting with the trim too, so many LS's had the wire covers though, harking back to the 20s/30s luxury or whatever LOL. Definitely a pretty sweet overall setup you have.

My T-bird has every option but a sunroof and it was a consolette and wire wheel car from the factory. Now it has Turbo Coupe wheels and a full console, but still the column shifter.

I like the scoops in flat black. I think it works with the black paint. Now if the car was red not so much.

Someone else here actually posted a pic with a TC hood and matte black scoops.....It's where I got the idea from originally.  It wasn't red though......I'm in agreement.  It won't work with most colors.    The grille, center line on the belt moulding, and all the window trim will be matte black as well so it will flow nicely IMO.

news is the car stopped running. Lost spark.  looks like Another ignition module....5th one since I've had the car.  I also
found something I had stashed and forgot about.  ELECTROLUMINESCENT COACH LAMPS.  I think they are going on the car.  I tested them. they work.

Paul, the coach lamps use the larger bolt circle than the 1987 did. You'd have to drill a bunch of new holes in order to use them. Not an impossible task, just letting you know. Takes courage to drill a 1" circular hole in a freshly-painted C-pillar...

All the glass is back in.  I think I'm just gonna put the special edition emblems back on.  I'd LOVE to do something with these coach lamps though..... Maybe replace the interior map lights?  I still gotta play with my newfound no start condition.  I've narrowed it to the module or distributor.....

Anyway, here are some py pics.  Wednesday I'll break out the DSLR.

Those were one of the few things that I had decided to use over again due to the fact that they were clean.....
Picked away a little more today.  All the trim is on save for those 2 pieces.  Now I get to play with the keyless entry.  Eric spoke of cutting before....The new keyless entry REQUIRES it and I am NOT re-using the old one.  This new one I have goes with the car much better.

Got the car running agin too.  Buddy of mine had an ignition module and distributor that were only run for a couple of hundred miles....Swapped the old coil out and put the new one on.  Instant start up!

Bad news....Can't find my door sill plates.  They are in one of 2 places that are not where the car is.  Time to start looking.

Almost forgot -- Lou, the moulding is going back on.  Black needs something to break it up a bit IMO.

How do you know the equipment package number?  I was reading on CoolCats about the build sheet under the passenger seat.  Is that where you find it and is that the only way?

Also, I have a hunch I will feel like an idiot after I hear the answer, but what do you mean by a consolette car?

A consolette car doesn't have a console. It has the small "short" console connected to the driver seat with the padded armrest.

I have that, but I didn't know it was called a consolette.  You learn something every day.  Also, I originally didn't find the list of options and packages on the CoolCats site but I just went back and looked again.  I also have the 163a.  Good to know.

The Focus is in fact a 2012.  Wish we could have held out a few months for an ST model, but hey if I really want/need the power Roush makes a twin screw blower for this car.

Vinnie, the emblem is about one inch in height and 6 inches in length.

Ours is an se.  Got it in November and already has 6k on it.      Those emblems are mostly trunk.  I need the flexible kind that fits in the notchout on the front bumper on the left.

I was hoping one would fit there. I did see the factory piece a couple of weeks ago. I'll keep looking.

Ours has 15,200 already. My wife had to drive 40 miles each way for work. But she starts a new job in the same field but 20 miles closer tomarrow. So we'll be able to start putting less on it now.

I'm actually doing a photoshoot with my Mustang club this Thursday.....Until then

New wheels are on the way.

I do require ONE piece.  I need a new Mercury Emblem for the front bumper.  Sadly, mine was rather beat up and in fitting with the rest of the car I don't fell it would be warranted to reuse it.

That really looks good. The new black appears to pop more :).

Beautiful car, with great mods done to it.  Fine example.

I am slowly getting there with my Black 88.

Look up the part numbers on coolcats and copy/paste them into the part # lookup on the site listed above.  Prepare for eye-widening beforehand.

Good news.  The wheels are on.

Bad news.
The roof needs a repaint......
Went home and washed it for the first time since I've had it back after I got the wheels on.  Noticed about 30 small "paint pimples" on the roof.  Looks like an issue that will necessitate bringing it back down to the metal......AGAIN.

Looks good :).

At least it's only the roof.

The roof was probably the worst part on the car when we stripped it.  I am NOT gutting this  car again.

It's weird.  they don't look like your typical surface rust under paint.  They appear similar to fish eye runs.

Was some residue from the stripping process left on the roof when the primer was put on?

Can't rule ANYTHING out at this point.  Might be  a week or 2 before we can do anything about it.  The good news is the fact that it's not noticeable unless you get right up on the car.

That really bites about the paint man.  However, the wheels look AWESOME.  They really changed the look of your cat!

The new wheels look great!! Nice choice! I had simular issues when it came to painting my car to. It got repainted 3 times. The first time they didn't get enough paint on it and I rubbed through it on the edges. The following spring it got scuffed and painted again only to crack because of too much paint. So I was showed how to strip the paint down to the bare metal and it got painted again. This time they used a new gun and wouldn't you know it didn't get cleaned out good enough or something and spit white specks all over the black. So it got sanded down and repainted one more time, this time it turned out great. That's been I think 10 years ago, and now I'd like to have it all redone again.
