Title: Winter stuff to do
Post by: thewestie on December 19, 2011, 03:39:53 PM
I put the car on a mustang dyno the other day. I wanted to check the rwhp and see where I should be shifting and see the afr. I am planing on taking some jets out of the primaries and see if I cant get the afr in the lower rpms a bit leaner. I also am doing a 5 lug and cobra brake swap and would like to keep track of the progress here and get better at posting stuff.

Man I gotta work on my uploading skills. I tried to make the Youtube vid work on the page and get the pdf to show as a pic. No luck :(
HP310.8 @ 5785 RPM / 118.9MPH  Torque 324.0 @ 4276 RPM / 88.5MPH

Yes on a mustang chassis dyno. I still haven't figured how to get the pdf to post on the page or get the youtube to play here either?

the pdf opens fine for me.. maybe it helps because i hate the latest adobe reader? :dunno

anyway.. you don't want to go leaner, you need to richen that thing up! 11.6 is too lean, i'm surprised you're not eating plugs left and right.. 14's is where you need to be.. 9.6 is terribly, terribly lean.. i'm surprised you're not falling on your face when you leave the line.. lean is only good for power in a 2 stroke, but it will eat away at the top of the piston.. we call it 'burning down' with the micros, since we're running 2 stroke dirt bike motors and it happens to noobs all the time

anyway.. go rich, going more lean = bad in your situation

^umm, I think you have your info messed up.  14.7 is where you want to be cruising at, and 10.9 to 11.5-6 is usually pretty good at WOT.  I think you can run N/A stuff leaner, but 11.4 is where I run my turbocoupe and havent had an issue all year.
9.6 is not terribly lean, its fouling plugs rich!!

I was going to say something as well, but I have never even seen a wide band, or used a tuner so I decided to keep my mouth shut.

Agreed.  14.7:1 is ideal.  At WOT 11.5:1 is best.  At cruise you can even go up to 15-15.4:1.  Idle can be even leaner.

I have an Innovate Wideband in the 351W Ranger and it is GREAT!!  I LOVE IT!!  Really helps eliminate tuning issues and dial in AFR at idle, cruise and WOT w/o having to use a dyno.  It evn has a feature to tether to a laptop and plot everything as you drive so you are not trying to look at the gauge.  My truck is currently 13.5 at idle, 12.6 at cruise and low-11's at WOT.  Need to get a jet kit of the winter and start tinkering in the spring to lean it out.  Best $200 I spent on that truck!  The dyno however helps dial in timing and advance curves.

Great numbers, congrats!!

Thanks

The Guy that will be doing the carb work in the spring when its closer to summer, will be installing a wideband for a while to map it and then he has a plan as far as jetting and he wants to bring the timing a little earlier to smooth out the low  city rpm driving. Its hard to drive it nice and gentile with mom in it she likes the vroom vroom car but not when it plants her in the seat shes not a big fan of speed. If I new what I know now I probably gone with a vac advance distributor

And i still need advice on posting videos so they play on the same page?

if you decide to switch to a vacuum advance distributor in the future, ask a few people who run them first.. some brands don't advance/retard enough for a healthy motor's liking

easy enough to change that though.  There's a set screw in the vacuum servo that you can adjust.  As for mechanical advance, you can take that apart and either weld up the movable piece to limit mechanical advance, or grind it out to have more.  On my truck, I ended up not using the vacuum advance because it would just surge crazily down the road until I unhooked it.

Got started on making a home for those new 31 spline axles. If I have time after work tomorrow I will be dropping it off at a local rear end builder who will be sand blasting it and welding the tubes to the center. While there  he will install the new track lock and some other tings.

That looks pretty sweet.

Only car related thing done today was to install a trickle charger on the XR7 optima uber battery!!  :)

What dist. are you running. I had a MSD Probillet in my ranger, I loved it. Mine had different bushings you could change to raise or lower full advance timing and it had different springs you could change for how fast or slow the advance came in. Really good Dist., if I swap from EFI to carb I'll be using a MSD Probillet.

That's what I'm running I have two of them the first one the shop that put the steel gear on didn't set the end play rite and It hurt it self on start up had a different Machinist fix it and While I waited I got another one. Its a great distributor I have 1 light spring and one heavy spring and advance is in by 3000 rpm I gonna play a little more when i get the carb jetted down a little to get a little bit more around town 4th gear low rpm drivability

Why yes it is. I picked it up the other day for $175, Ive wanted one for a long time. I love using my buddies when I work at his shop.
Another friend stopped by and told me a funny story He says he knows why there called  bumper jacks and not side of the car jacks. He was picking up his old datsun pick up from the frame at the rocker and almost rolled it if he didn't leave the passenger door ajar when the truck was  going over it swung open and stopped the truck from going over.

sounds like a pretty good deal.. i usually see them upwards around $300 and they disappear just as quickly as the ads are posted.. and yeah, i would only advise using it on the side of a vehicle if you have 2 lol

Pull graph looks good westie. Car sounds fantastic, too. If you can get that leaned out a hair it'll be perfect. Better to sneak up on it from the rich side, I say.  Best power around 12 to 12.5 in my experience. Any richer than 12 can lose quite a bit. I'd bet there's 20-30 more ponies right there.

Oh, and distributor???? :poke:  What's a distributor, again??  :poke: :rollin:

Gotta put this away before it gets covered in rain. I'm trying not to mention the S word Shadow doesn't like it. So no work on the car till my cs are done  cs. Should be able to get 8.8 dropped off in a day or two.

That yellow hunk of iron in the pic with the 8.8 on the bumper jack makes me and my wallet like the S word It netted me a TKO + last year. But I don't like it as much as I did when I was younger in fact I'm not a big fan of the cold anymore either :)

that doesn't count, you make money off of it.. lol i thought about picking up a plow, but i'd never mount it on the front of any of my trucks.. so it'd be a waste of money lol
