i'm in the process of looking for a new (temporary) building to reopen my shop, since moving has been put off after 2 houses falling through in delaware.. on craigslist, i've found some really nice buildings for rent, but with insanely high rent.. 1 guy with a 25x27 on private farm land wants $1300 A MONTH, plus electric.. no on-property advertising allowed.. seriously? there are others that are a little bigger and smaller for around the same ballpark price.. none of which are worth anymore than 4-500 a month, TOPS.. people are insane.. the only way i'd pay that kind of money if if the building is big enough to fit 3 cars and sits on commercial property on a busy road, where i can put my sign up
sorry, just ranting lol
I know around here there still building warehouses, with a lot of the others still vacant.

Last week I posted a thread about car storage on a local mustang website. Basically asking what folks are willing to pay for dry, secure and safe car storage over the winter months (November through March)...this was after watching them complain about pay over $120/month to store ONE car. So I thought maybe I'd add on to my existing 2500sq ft garage to cover some of the mortgage and taxes. The answer I got......no one wanted to pay over $40/month but still wanted unlimited access to get their car anytime they wanted. At that rate it's not worth the hassle.
I used to pay $30/month to store my Falcon but the dang guy was always uncovering it and showing people and one time I found boxes on it!! The next winter I used another place....found out later they were moving it all the time and there were cat tracks ALL over it! It would have paid $80/month for it to be warm and untouched.
people are complaining about paying more than 4 bucks a month, to store their car under a roof? good god, people are cheap.. i finally posted a 'building wanted' ad with my minimal space necessity, with my absolute max price.. i got an email already from my old landlord who turned out to be a real douche.. i was in the space for 6 months, only had electric for 3 months before they cut it off to 'put in a separate meter' because it was running off the meter on the house on the same property (about 100yds away).. i've gone by since and there's still no meter and he's asking 400 more a month, plus electric now.. i'm not falling for that again, he can kiss my fat white butt
tom, as for the building that's been vacant for 10 years.. there are a lot of vacant garages/pole barns/old gas stations around here that the owners refuse to rent out that are in decent locations.. i would think that they would prefer to make money off an empty building instead of it sitting there, getting zero use for years end, potentially costing them money.. people will be morons, i suppose..
i'm about ready to go back to the storage place where i had a shop before. at first i had 1 11x31 space and spread out as the spaces on either side became available. i had 3 spaces and had them completely remove 1 of the walls and 2/3 of the other.. i build my office and a little 'office front' with a regular door, that i could lock up by closing the overhead door.. it was pretty nice because i had a nice loft above the office for storage and enough space to put a car on dollies to sneak in behind the office when i needed to pull something in. it was only 125 a spot with electric when i had all 3 (normally 150 for a single space). surprisingly, there were numerous businesses being run out of there, a lot of them were HVAC guys and there's even a cycle shop in there. the only downfall is, it's 45 minutes away, but if i have to, i'll go back.. here's a couple pics of my original single space, before i expanded

Any of you guys ever consider putting up a pre-fab wood building?

It was somewhere around 5k delivered. Warrantied 30 years, granted it's only 12x24, but if we're talking car storage, thats the size of a 1 car, oversize garage.
I keep my 72 Olds in there all the time, have a work bench at the far end with my tools, etc and have plenty of room to get around.
i considered it, but for that amount of money, i could build 1 3x the size.. problem is, where we live now, we rent.. we were planning on renting when we move to DE too, but as cheap as houses and taxes are in DE, we're just going to buy.. so far it looks like i'll have to settle for a house with either no garage or a small garage and work a pole-barn into the mortgage.. with a single 12x24, it'd get filled with parts in a week anyway, with no room for a car lol
